Lagerfeld: Haute couture better than working on the assembly line
Berlin (dpa ) - Fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld says he firmly believes in the future of haute couture, the German magazine Die Zeit reported Wednesday.
"In the past, there were good customers and they came from America, brought four, five dresses. Today, these are young
women who come from around the world - from
Africa to South America, China, Korea - and they come and buy 20 dresses," said the German-born chief designer of Paris-based fashion house Chanel.
Many of his clients however no longer travelled to
Paris themselves, Lagerfeld said. "They don't bother: They don't try on the items, but get them flown home to them by private jet," he said.
Only a few were having their the clothes tailor-made. "Travelling to Paris, having their measurements taken at Chanel, that is something only a few still do," the eccentric veteran of the international fashion set said.
Previously, haute couture had been something for "fat ladies who couldn't find anything and had to have something made," he said. The new clients were "women with figures just like the mannequins."
"It's beautiful to wear couture, and to produce it is more beautiful than working on an assembly line. As long as I'm with Chanel, I will do haute couture," he said.
