I've always wanted to learn how to knit, I'm hoping my mom will teach me soon. It looks fun and I want to make my own scarves.

Knit Nut--Gotta Jump In Here!

I've been an insane knitter for years now--now turned pro selling my own one-of-a-kind, art-to-wear original designed garments (and handcrafted jewelry as well).

I taught myself to knit by following an Aran afghan pattern--with all the cables!! I'm truly knit nut. Once I start a project, I can't stop and almost always turn it into an ensemble. One time, I designed and knitted up an 7-piece ensemble: long-sleeve dress, short-sleeved dress, long (tunic-length cardigan), capelet, two berets & even leg warmers! Each one is in reverse color schemes (like nutmeg brown with dark brown accents & vice versa). I was going to make 2 pairs of reverse color gloves then finally had to tell myself, "Draw the line for cryin' out loud!" and moved on to something else... I did--a full-length dressy black mohair coat with the entire top worked in 4 strands of eyelash at a time on the yoke and sleeves. That was before eyelash was this popular due to the scarf/purse craze.

Thought I'd post a photo of my latest Chili Pepper outfit, a lace knit top to which I added individual flowers & beads, a mohair jacket and the jacket I'm working on which is me now getting into crochet & freeform and have knitted up a mohair jacket (handloom on the top/handknit lace stitch on the bottom & then added lace & freeform). I've got the back & sleeve freeform motifs ready to applique on but I've been stalling and so switched to working on jewelry like a fiend the past 2 weeks. (Hope the photos load!)

I have to ask the scarf knitters--do you all get bored knitting straight and have the urge to try a sweater?

Oops--Meant to Add This Info to the Discussion

There's an established HUGE, very active Yahoo knitting Group everyone can join called "Knitlist." They have several thousand knitters on there and pros like Joan Schrouder and Dawn Brocco often respond to everyone's tech questions.

I knit! I'm starting my first real project, the SnB devil hat. It's frusterating me tonight. I already pulled it out twice.

Hi, Rhiannonmars: Did you work through the problem with your hat? I wanted to share my experience because I can be stubborn and determined and will rip, rip, rip and redo a million times. For me, after you've frogged the thing a few times, you'll probably end up trying too hard and rushing, which usually compounds the problem. Sometimes it's better to admit temporary defeat and put damned thing aside for a few hours or a day. Knitting reflects your inner self--if you're tense from struggling with a section, it'll show in the tightness of your stitches...

Have you been to Artful Fibers (pretty sure that's the name in SF?) It's supposed to be a GREAT shop. They do have a website you can google.

Amy -

I did work through the problem. I was confused as all hell how to accomplish seed stich in the round. I found it weird that you end on a p1, but then start the row (or begining) with another p1. I remedied this problem with using a stich marker so I wouldn't mindlessly k1, p1 though that transistion point.

I haven't been to that shop in SF yet. I will have to go! I am still new to this knitting thing. It's been about a month of it for me. I've been going to Artipract in Oakland as well as taking advantage of Michaels in Emeryville. There is also a more expensive yarn store in the Montclair district of Oakland. Everything there is $10+ a ball.

i made this scarf yesterday and then promptly gave it to a friend as a going away/congrats-on-becoming-an-aunt present. it's a really short neckwarm-type scarf, and she didn't want me to put a button on so i gave her a kilt-pin to use to hold it together. it's more even than the detail shot looks but i was holding it at kind of a weird angle. that stitch is really easy to do and goes a lot faster than normal knitting, so i'm going to start making a lot more of them..i really love the texture.

Hi, Francesca: That's a neat stitch pattern. The drop stitch makes it a little less bulky fit around the neck and also adds interest.

The quick reply option doesn't seem to be working for me. Just wanted to congratulate on figuring out the stitch marker placement on your own. When you do quickly graduate to trying your first lace pattern, my tip to share is that placing a marker between EACH pattern repeat across the row will make a HUGE difference in following the pattern and tracking errors (yes--there will be plenty when trying to knit up lace!).

Proud of you for not giving up! :flower: If you google discount yarn, you'll find tons of sites where you can buy yarn on sale (a lot less than $10/ball). Of course, you have to make sure the shipping & handling fees don't bring it back up to $10/ball.

 I don't have a pattern, I kind of just make it up every time I go to make one.

Knitting is the coolest thing ever. Last year I slammed my hand in a door and tore a ligament and cracked all these bones and was in a brace for about three months, and I was so addicted I just kept knitting anyway. Luckily, it was my left hand I hurt and I'm a rightie so I managed to figure out a way to slide the stitches off my needle without using my fingers and basically poked my needle into my palm every time I finished a row. It was painful, but I got these great leg warmers out of it.

And recently I knit my friend this awesome messenger bag from the first pattern I ever made! It's really ghetto and made out of thin yarn so I doubt it'll last a lifetime but hey, I designed something!

i think francesca (bless her!) asked me why i switched my knitting method.
i taught myself to knit continental (feeding the yarn from the left hand) after years of knitting english style ('throwing' the yarn with the right) and the movement is much more economical. also, with the yarn in the left hand you can see the stitch that is coming up, which helps me sort out what i am supposed to do next....if that makes sense....

i learned to do it at knitting help's website....

oops, sorry for the duplicate.

francesca, i wanted to ask you about that scarf - i love the stitch pattern, it's gorgeous. can you tell me how you did it, what size needles, etc?

thanks, meme

ps: hope you will join TFS knits, i can question you more throguhly over there!
bwahaahahaa!

My grandmother knit me a lovely top from a fifties pattern this summer, and I was so inspired I want to learn how to knit again, I don't think I have since elementary school! I'd love to be able to make my own tops/cardigans etc. Knowing my impatient self though, I'd probably take on a project much to complicated and advanced right away, fail miserably, and then never pick up another ball of yarn again  I might have to make do with a few scarves instead...

.francesca and Elegance, I  your scarves, so beautiful and creative!

hey all:

i can't believe how knit obsessed i have become! :)

i am currently using double pointed needles to knit in the round. i can't believe how mcho it makes me feel, having four pointy sticks and some yarn in my hands.

i am hoping to see more of you at the yahoo group for tfs knitters (and crocheters too, of course) at

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/tfsknits

i m updating the links section and looking forward to a little tfs community.
:D

I hate double pointed needles!! Once I was just about to bind off this hat I finished and a bunch of the stitches just slipped off and unraveled so much that there was no chance of repairing it! Circular needles are way easier to use.

Oh yeah, do people actually wear the things they make? I mostly just make hats and donate them to kids undergoing chemotherapy. Definitely kept my Harry Potter scarf though. :p

meme: thanks for the knitting group! i'm off to join soon :)

thanks also for explaining how you switched..i've been knitting continental as long as i've known how to knit, and watching someone knit english makes my head spin! i've tried it and i just don't get it. but i love that there are so many different ways to knit! in our craft group, there are 5 people who are always knitting, and i swear they all do it a different way. it's so neat!

ok, so the scarf...you're talking about the one with the pretty holey pattern, right? it's SO EASY i can't believe it took me so long to figure out (i finally had to ask someone) and then i totally slapped my head.

so you knit as many rows as you want, i think in that one i knit 5. then on the 6th row, instead of wrapping once around the needle, wrap twice..you'll end up with 2 loops on the take-up needle. do that for a whole row. when you're done that row, you'll notice the 2 loops. only go through ONE of them, and finish that row. you'll think you messed up because there will be a huge, floppy loop of yarn, but just pull the row down...you'll see right away that the row is open like that (above) for a reason. and just continue with that pattern for the whole scarf! or mix and match, i'm sure it will turn out beautiful.

does that make any sense at all? knitting is so visual. let me know and i can try to explain better.

:flower:

thank you for the compliments, caramel! i can't wait to see some of your stuff!

here i go to tfs knits! :woot:
