I think I told you gals that I talked my way into designing a reatil pattern for a yarn company, and they dyed some mini yarn skeins to my color requests. I've had the yarn since about April...
I was in the middle of projects, but I finally started writing up the pattern(s). I don't know what it is with me, but I can never knit just one thing. It's always got to be an ensemble with me. The same day they expressed interest, I sketched out a dress, top, skirt, shawl & purse. Oh yeah, I also sketched matching pants, but my software didn't that have option, so I let it go with
just those.
The problem is, I had to translate
each pattern with charts into
4 different sizes. I started knitting up my swatch, and the gauge wasn't matching the gauge given for that yarn. Well, anyway, all I can say is, I've been writing and rewriting all the patterns, all the charts ad nauseum. Everytime I'd knit a few rows, I'd decide something else and have to redo
everything. I've grown to
hate this project, and I wish I never got involved. For the tiny amount of money they're paying me (to turn over my copyright 100%, no less), it's just not worth the effort or the time.
I originally thought this would be a good starting point to get my name out there as a designer. But, unlike most every pro knitter, I'm not interested in selling patterns or books like they are. I'm interested in selling one-of-a-kind
garments. So in a way, this has all been pointless for me except to give me major aggravation...
I think I'm done with writing all the patterns and charts, but I still have several more inches to knit on the swatch so they can get a true idea of what the stitches will look like. Since the original discussion was for one pattern, I have no idea what they would pay me for designing the whole ensemble--although I have been in touch and told them it's several items. I really need to get it in gear, but the thing was so involved and complex, I'm nervous to submit it without knitting every damn garment up just to check the details. Well, it would take a lifetime to do that, so that's not going to happen.
Anyway, I've been getting into my sewing more lately--even joined the American Sewing Guild and have been attending some meetings and really enjoying it. (I just posted my first little black velvet vintage purse with handcrafted flowers to the handbags forum if you want to see one new thing I've been up to).
Maybe you all could chat up knitting a little so I could get my enthusiasm back for my project. I think the concept/design is attractive, just don't want the hassle of dealing with it.
