hehe - oh, the grief!

yes, i ripped it out, and it was oddly satisfying - my first major frog. i had dreaded doing that up until that point - and now that i have done it, i feel much less worried about the mistakes that i make - i am more confident aboiut my ability to correct them along the way - and i haven't frogged anything else since!

and your advice about knitting both the sleeves simultaneously is dead on. the sleeve started as a swatch, believe it or not, and when i wrapped it around my wrist i just went.."hmmmmmmm." so it transferred it to DPNs and it is coming along beautifully. so i cast on another "swatch" and have knit that to the point where i should join it on DPNs - but i have to get another set in the same size, make and model!

hey - how come we don't have these discussions at "tfsknits"? :(

lamb: there are some great sites that will teach you knitting online (i am assuming that youre a native english speaker or very near):

www.knittinghelp.com is THE BEST. it has videos to help you every step of the way. all free.
 
im hoping to learn how to knit or crochet (soon) :p . knitted items are soo warm to wear in the winter, and if i ever knit something ill; knit a black and white striped scarf.

Oh, I'll bet you're mom's a terrific knitter. The Scandinavian countries seem to stress knitting as part of their culture. I had one class in knitting in Jr. High School/home ec.--we made booties and mine came out all botched up. The teacher took them and promised to fix them, but I never got them back. It was so disappointing. I was also an almost complete failure in sewing-- wrecked the pattern twice and had to rebuy material then ruined the zipper a few times trying to figure out how to put that in. :cry: Who would've guessed knitting would become my passion and sewing--well, a passion but still an extreme challenge...

I taught myself when I saw a really gorgeous pattern for an Aran (cabled) afghan that I was determined to knit. I bought a basic instruction book nd just went for it. Later, I found a local yarn shop to help when I attempted my first (complicated, naturally!) sweater. There are so many great instruction books out now. As Meme said, you can find websites with videos teaching the basics as well.

I love knitting and I'd like to make this cute little hat

but the instructions are so darn complicated! (Just a beginner hehe :p ) Does anyone have any idea what M1 & K1 mean?

i just found this and im so excited! :D i work at a fabric store and am an avid knitter...i just figured out intarsia knitting and am replicating the louis vuitton symbols on a scarf. i'll have to post pics, its not even close to being done, but i got a whole symbol done already! i have really been amazed at the popularity of knitting just over the past year. we were having ladies come in on a weekly basis spending $800 on yarn! i do scarfs, vests, have two sweaters half done and my favorite are these wraps i have done using a whole ton of different yarns...i just started doing hats too after i replicated a hat my grandma gave me....well enough of my babbling....anyone thought of a myspace group on knitting?? i'd be more than happy to start one over there, if anyone would be interested....

oh and a book i recommend is the readers digest encyclopedia(dictionary?) of knit and crochet. it has all the different cast on methods for both, and hundreds of stitches and stuff. this is the most thourough book i have found on the subject. and i love the vogue knitting designer "twinkle" and any rowan yarn patterns ... i think their site is www.knitrowan.com

Oh, GREAT--more knitters joined the conversation. I'm reluctant to join any more forums because I already belong to so many (knitting/jewelry/sewing, etc) and reading my daily digests is taking up half my day.

Wanted to comment that M1 K1 means Make 1, Knit 1. This means you are increasing a stitch on the row every time you Make 1. You'll find out there are many techniques for trying to do each thing in knitting--and no one right way. Some people M1 by lifting the bar inbetween stitches and knitting that. Others knit into the front and then into the back of the next stitch to add the extra stitch to increase the row. I use this method. There have been plenty of suggestions in this thread for books and online websites that teach basics. If you want to knit that cute hat, I think I would start with only making it 2 colors (forget the design for now) and learn the basics. You can always redo it a second time, this time with the intarsia (which is what the design/color change is called).

Jun3machina: Since you work at a fabric store, are you more into sewing than knitting? I'm also into sewing but really would just prefer to design and have someone sew the stuff up for me as I've got highly advanced design ideas and only intermediate skills. :woot:

I'm participating in a craft fair this weekend and am in a frenzy trying to get all of my products tagged and ready, plus we're working on building more girds for my booth (this is only our 3rd show). The booth is looking quite professional but has cost a small fortune in supplies, time and effort.

Knowing how moms and grandmas will spend anything on kids, I just completed these baby booties and little matching pouch to store them in. I'm trying to decide what to charge. It's both knitting and crochet. I'm really not into knitting baby clothes, but if it will sell, I'll learn to love it. :lol:

I've been reading the knitting thread for a while now, and I have to say it's been a great inspiration for me. :flower: I love knitting but I do it on and off... sometimes I don't do anything for six months and sometimes it's all I do!

At the moment I'm thinking about trying to knit as many christmas presents as possible. I'm a student so I don't have loads of money to spend on presents, and I think my family would appreciate presents I made myself.

I found this lovely lacy scarf on a finnish website and started knitting on a long train journey. I've never done lace before but it is quite easy, actually. I'm using beige wool and I think it suits the pattern nicely. It would be a great present for my mom I think...^_^

it is beautiful, although i don't understand a word. i recognize that diamond lace pattern, i think.

i'm glad you're posting here. if you have any photos of your projects, feel free to put them up .

i wish i had a digital camera, because i am working on so many things.

my latest adventure - dyeing wool with koolaid, knitting them into bags and felting them. i just dyed my first few skeins of lion brand "fisherman's wool' and i am giddy with creative pleasure. plus the yarn smells all fruity and fresh.

life's simple joys - kool-aid and knitting.

the new issue of "InStyle" magazine has a spread on cashmere, its production, various types, qualities, etc., and shows some pricey pieces, some of which are really beautiful and interesting. makes me want to get some cashmere and knit it up!

very informative and inspirational article.
