THE STYLING OF Marc Jacobs F/W 06/07 NYC

subtlety?!?!...are you JOKING...:p

that is anything BUT subtle imo...
and that is just STYLING...
that is not DESIGN...

that is why his critics say he is a stylist and not a designer...
;)...
Alright, let's debate the highs and the lows of the Marc Jacobs F/W show from a stylist's perspective.

Pictures to back up any rants or raves, please.

I think everyone has acknowledged that this show was heavily styled, so heavily styled that it's difficult to see the clothes. I said that, Suzy said that, and I'm sure many others have too.

There are building blocks that went into the styling, and I think both are interesting and discussion-worthy. So far I've pretty much been hearing, "The girls looked like they were homeless, end of story." I don't think it IS the end of the story.
oh-
i was commenting more on what i thought was a complete lack of subtlety...
and not so much the styling...

**btw-anyone else think that mary kate olsen seems to be his new 'muse'...

um...
it was heavily styled...?.....
i don't know if we need a new thread for this...
i mean...
what are we going to discuss in the other thread then?...
...

I am really enjoying looking at this....it may be the styling or whatever but I just like the way it looks. It has texture (which I have always loved), slouch and muted colours (again which I adore). I am not sure how this would look on an older customer though.

sorry...
MARC is the one who started the whole 'tying sleeves around the waist thing'...

Actually I think my kindergarten teacher invented that. She use to make us tie out jackets around our waists when we would get hot running around at recess so we wouldn't lose them. hehe ^_^ just being silly

zrzava - there are already a LOT of MJ threads and one on this collection....i think its best to discuss the styling of the collection in the same place as discussing the collection no? the styling is the collection is it not?

I don't think it is either. I guess I was just thinking that perhaps his heavy styling is doing his line a disservice. Sure it creates a feel, a mood. Something very theatrical, but the clothes get lost. So here is a random question perhaps meant for it's own thread. Which do you feel is better? Creating a feeling or mood at a fashion show that correlates with the clothing, or showcasing the clothes. I think obviously Marc is skilled at the former, and perhaps he can get away with it because of his status, but I find it difficult to analyze individual pieces from his shows.

Granted I have never seen one live. Only video.

^ I believe I just illustrated the same exact thing with a number of photos above.

What's your point? Are you saying it was a mistake? Surely the LVMH empire knows how to source "normal" hose when they so desire?

Surely instead they are making a statement. You can love it, hate it, or be neutral about it--but surely no one could claim it's not deliberate.

I happen to think the hosiery and legwear in this show was quite interesting.

I also believe that a discussion of the show's styling is entirely appropriate to this here thread--just as the styling of other shows is appropriate to the corresponding threads.

yeah that's what I when I was looking through the collection. . .
Ohh and I don't like this collection, at all!

Well, perhaps it's a bit semantic ... what I'm trying to convey is "detail-rich" ... it seems not too unusual for people to have an initial negative reaction to an MJ show, and then after some consideration (or watching the video, or coming back to the stills, or whatever), start to like it more.

Like Helena was saying, texture. It's a bit multi-faceted, a bit like a kaleidoscope. Shift and you may see something different.

As far as the styling obscuring the clothes ... he's certainly not the only designer to do this ... Galliano's been doing this for years, right, and all the fashion editors proudly note that they are capable of seeing the really lovely clothes hiding behind the drama. I think he has the right to make an artistic statement, and certainly his doing so is not hindering his commercial success. As Lena mentioned in another thread, he's one of the handful of designers who have the most influence on the mass market. And I don't blame him in the least, just wish his look books weren't the runway photos. If you can't see the clothes in person, you're kinda screwed, esp when it comes to pieces major retailers didn't buy.

i didn't say i didn't like it ta-ta...:)

i think it's fine...
i just don't necessarily think it is 'new' or 'fresh'...
or any big deal really...

*or all that different from what mary kate olsen wears, for example...

^_^...
but can we talk about the shoes???...:innocent:...

...

i totally eat up things like this. sure, the clothes are largely frumpy and not altogether flattering, but i totally love such collections. (and feel a little about it.)

you have to admire the interest factor, right?

I think the comparisions to Mary Kate are incredibly lazy. Big layers weren't invented by her - there's none of her underlying bubblegum anorexic coked out child star vibe to these clothes. I think it's just another way for haters to hate Marc Jacobs.

Both the tight and the loose versions? It's impossible to tell from the photos. Is there a better place to get information about the induvidual pieces?

...and Softgrey, the new thread was created because someone suggested it a few pages back but I guess we can just sift through the ump-teen pages here and comment on everything together. No prob.

Well, I can see how they're made from the pictures I posted. Both the seams and the hems are visible. See my posts on the last page ...

For a collection with no subtlety, people are having a hard time figuring it out ...

PS Another thing that could be seen as "subtle" about this collection is the color scheme ...

I think that it is a very "busy" show, and for the people who don't know his designs much or don't spend a lot of time on the picstures and the video, it is very difficult to figure out. I'm looking forward to the trunk show :flower: Let me know if you want to know details on any specific item and I will try to take pictures for you:)

by the way, posting pictures to accuse Marc being "copy cat" is just annoying and silly :innocent: (or to show off your fashion history knowledge?) do the same thing to every single collection, hey you got another 9-5 job. Let's talk about THIS collection.

but you are assuming that i think that mk's look is bad or something...

i didn't say that...
and i didn't say i hated mj......

some people are really defensive about this...
:ninja:...

^^Well it's a valid point if something is BLATANTLY being ripped off. Wouldn't want to heap Marc with praise for something that he was 'heavily inspired' by something else.
