Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe, who started the year on an Oscar-winning high, are ending it on a low note: The couple have separated.
"We are saddened to announce that Reese and Ryan have decided to formally separate," publicist Nanci Ryder said in a statement issued Monday on behalf of the couple.
"They remain committed to their family and we ask that you please respect their privacy and the safety of their children at this time," the brief statement concluded. Ryder said she could not elaborate on the split.
Witherspoon, 30, and Phillippe, 32, have two children, 7-year-old Ava and 3-year-old Deacon. The couple, who co-starred in the 1999 movie "Cruel Intentions," married that year.
In March, Witherspoon won a best-actress Academy Award for her role as June Carter Cash in 2005's "Walk the Line." Phillippe co-starred in the best-picture winner, "Crash," and is starring in Clint Eastwood's latest film, the World War II drama "Flags of Our Fathers."

So sad. My heart goes out to the kids. It's going to be soooooooooooo weird seeing them with other people. Unlike others who have dated other celebs these two started young and we have only seen them together. I bet people won't like it.

It's sucks that they did it before Christmas. The kids day is going to blow. Couldn't they have waited until the new year.

I agree with people that Cruel Intentions will never be the same. It's like when I watch the ep of Friends with Brad guest stared.

Tom & Nicole, Brad & Jen now Ryan & Reese. I have no favourite couple now. After them if SJP and Matthew break up then I will throw something.

He's in Texas right now filming a movie and cheating on her...Perez Hilton and Pink Is The New Blog reported it yesterday, apparently he is kissing girls right out in the open. But then there were rumors for years that he would do that a lot out of insecurity.

Points of interest:

• There is no pre-nuptial agreement, so he will get half no matter what
• Ava's been sleeping in their bed every night and it's been driving Ryan nuts
• Howard: "I don't know how the hell you're going to stay married"
• Ryan goes to therapy for depression and also talks to his therapist about his career
• Didn't have sex until after 5 weeks after they met
• Reese isn't into threesomes
• Ryan has been hit on by gay casting directors

^Well, that was from a while ago already, but now that they've parted ways all these old details are coming back into the open...I really hope that the media keeps it peaceful and low-key for once, but that's definitely wishful thinking.

I saw on the main page "Reese Witherspoon and Ryan...", and I knew, I knew this was what it was going to say. I hoped it would end up being some uncredible rumor, a regurgitating of the old rumors that have been going around forever. I loved them together, and there are very few Hollywood couples I actually like. I loved how they had a real, everyday relationship and didn't try to hide under this perfect fairy tale facade, admitted they had problems and fights like every other marriage, but worked them out and stayed together. But now, that's over. I'm sad they couldn't make it work.

Isn't it amazing how so many of us... some not even interested in celebrity culture and whatnot... are bummed about this? I don't know if it's their physical attractiveness as a couple or our love solely of Reese... one of America's sweethearts... I just find the response to be interesting, and how so many people, on a very small level, were vested in this Hollywood marriage.
