Riccardo Tisci - Designer

I’ve heard that everyone is happy about this.

Happy about what, the fact that he and Gobbetti are running this company to the ground with their 1000 collections and perfumes per season? He should just go. It's not working out. Yes, it's great that they're such a success in China (performing better than other brands), but they've lost other markets in the process.

I can’t imagine that rumor is false. The negative energy Tisci brought to this brand is so palpable. The misery of the arrangement is so thick it could be cut with a knife. No one cares about a single thing he has made for Burberry.

It will be a quickly forgotten ordeal.

Tbh, the issue with Burberry is first of all strategic. It’s difficult to reposition yourself and at the same time respond to the market.
Because yes, Riccardo’s collections are very products-oriented. And this has been an ongoing problem since they regrouped all the lines under Burberry during the Christopher Bailey era.

In the middle of the whole thing, they have raised their prices to compete with other luxury brands that, compared to Burberry, have a strong luxury-goods business.

Gobbetti’s strategy was very short-term oriented but the market requested that. We all remember the embarrassment that was Bailey’s last few collections. Burberry trying to catch-up with the Streetwear craze.
The irony is that I’ve never seen so many young people wearing Burberry. While I enjoy the bourgeois aesthetic, I think the streetwear got so much coverage that some of their clientele got lost...

Fashionweekdaily asked them for their comment on the rumour and they responded with a curt 'Not True!'. LOL. The rumour was actually started by a LOVE magazine editor (UK based), so make of that what you will.

From US Vogue September 2020 - What is the future of fashion?

I’ve designed a new collection all by myself— it’s a lot of evening and a lot of easy-to-wear clothes: one point of view with two very different ways to wear it. Of course, I was on FaceTime with my team all the time, but it was very nice to put together something that really comes from my gut, without any interference.
Sometimes when you’re in a big company you have so many meetings, so many people, so many things to do that you can only dedicate a very small amount of time to creativity. What I need are things that are special and that have value—not only in clothing but in lifestyle and love and friendship and everything. I think we all need less, but better quality, better content.
A lot of things recently in fashion have just been a fight for power. What I feel for is passion. Come on—who doesn’t miss the McQueen, the Galliano shows of the ’90s? I’m doing a show of 100 looks for women and men; John’s shows were like 23 passages—but they were impeccable. I think there is a space for that again: less, but quality. Fashion shows are a dream. We shouldn’t stop them, but we need to make everyone part of them, not only the elite. The word elite is going to look very old. Nobody’s elite anymore. We cannot be. We’re all the same.

This makes me happy! I hope the result will be at the level of his talent! Go Riccardo!

You can see what he talks about in terms of having no time for creativity in his collections ever since he has been at Burberry. I am truly hoping that this is the moment the Tisci we all know and love switches on or that he just goes to Versace. Both would be good to be honest.

Anyone with an ounce of common sense knows that even the most hands-on designers depend on a team of assistants, pattern makers and seamstresses that contribute to the design process and make it all come to life.

On top of that I would say he spends more time on beaches and at the gym than designing anything. I would so like to believe we will see a breakthrough next season...

I mean it was obvious from the start that his collections were « corporate » friendly. I don’t know if he thinks he fooled us but it was obvious.

The pandemic had an healthy side in the fact that all those brands lost a couple of millions and the run to be « at the level of » or « bigger than » is stopped.

It’s really an opportunity for someone like him. He is talented and gifted. It’s really frustrating to see his work at Burberry.

I would love to see him at Alexander McQueen. My problem with Tisci has always been that he keeps bringing back his friends in fashion like Joan Smalls, Irina Shayk, Natalia Vodianova who are so overexposed and lackluster models. I am so tired of especially this woman Vodianova who has absolutely nothing to do with fashion or modeling. People would say it's not that deep but creative clothes lose their excitement when presented by such dull models. I am happy that he switched up the casts this time.

It's no different than Gianni Versace or Alexander Wang bringing the girls they love back time and time again. And Natalia Vodianova not having anything to do with fashion or modeling? Are you serious?

We get it, you love Mariacarla Boscono, but please spare us your biased opinion on these other equally talented models. Models have little to do with the designers creativity

there are some odd rumours floating around that Daniel Lee will become the CD at burberry. wonder where tisci will go?

There are non competition agreements here and there. You just don’t leave one group like KERING to just go somewhere right away…

Update: A few sources are saying that Tisci is “moving to NYC” and going to Calvin Klein.

I think my response to this is largely for fear, but a logical response to this is also -
Firstly, CK removed collection after Raf
Second, why would they bring on another 'big name' designer who has not been succesful at his last post esp after the Raf drama

I would be surprised that Tisci would be picked up to go anywhere once he leaves Burberry, maybe a struggling euro brand with investment who needs a quick injection of interest?
