Riccardo Tisci - Designer

CK is continuing to have their own internal issues over brand identity since Raf left. No clear strategy but highly doubt they'd pay the $$$ to bring another giant CD on. Sounds like they have enough issues trying to create synergy with someone like Heron Preston.

What synergy with HP? It was a one-off collaboration.

It doesn’t feel like he was even at Burberry that long. I’m surprised that CK would go with another star designer, if that’s indeed what they’re pursuing.

Burberry Said Talking to Designers, Including Daniel Lee
Burberry is evaluating its options, and looking for a potential successor to chief creative officer Riccardo Tisci, according to industry sources.
LONDON – Burberry is exploring a new creative path, and speaking to designers who could potentially replace chief creative officer Riccardo Tisci, whose contract expires in early 2023.

According to industry sources, one of those designers is Daniel Lee, who made an abrupt departure from the Kering-owned Bottega Veneta late last year, shortly after the brand’s spring-summer 2022 runway show in Detroit, Michigan.

One source said that Lee and Burberry were in advanced discussions, although no deal has been signed.

Burberry said Wednesday it does not comment on speculation.

The company, which is 100 percent quoted on the London Stock Exchange, has given no indication on Tisci’s future.

During its first-quarter results presentation in mid-July, Burberry said it was very happy with Tisci, and declined to comment on whether it was seeking to replace him.

It’s natural that Burberry would be looking at its creative options right now: Tisci took over nearly five years ago, and during that time has helped to expand the brand’s offer and build up key categories such as footwear, outerwear and men’s tailoring.

He has also pumped up Burberry’s social following, and stoked the flames of international demand with special, limited-edition product drops and a big focus on high-end leather accessories, especially the Olympia, Lola and TB monogram bags.

Tisci will show his next collection on Sept. 17, the eve of London Fashion Week, which runs from Sept. 18-22.

Burberry also welcomed a new CEO, Jonathan Akeroyd, earlier this year.

Akeroyd plans to lay out his new strategy for the company in November after Burberry’s interim results.

As part of his new roadmap, Akeroyd will likely be looking for a new talent to take over the creative helm of Burberry. According to sources, the brand has put out feelers to a number of prominent British designers in recent months.

As reported, Lee helped to revive Bottega Veneta, turning it into a hot ticket and a trend-setting label, and injecting a new and youthful spirit to the collections.

He delivered top-selling accessories, including the Pouch bag, and Cassette bag and the Lido sandals.

While sources said that Lee was shown the door following a string of complaints by Bottega Veneta staff, Kering described his departure as a joint decision. Since then, speculation has been rife about Lee’s next move.

Not surprised by these speculations. Tisci and Burberry just aren't a good fit in my book; I haven't been excited about anything Tisci has done for the brand so far, and he fails to sell the "lifestyle" the way he did at Givenchy.

Now, Daniel Lee makes a lot of sense for Burberry, and would probably do great. But if the rumors that he's horrible to work with are true, I feel sorry for people at Burberry already.

Very much hope this is true. I would absolutely love to see Daniel there.

As for Riccardo... idk what's going with him honestly, I hope he takes the time to find his mojo again. He should probably revive his namesake brand. Working for himself, without the safety net of a big brand could be the motivation he needs.

I am keeping my fingers crossed for Daniel at Burberry literally the moment Kering announced his departure. He would be ideal - young, vibrant, talented with great sense of style, commercial art and to-do approach.
Do I feel sorry for the team having to spend best years of their lives literally chained to his desk? Yes.
Am I ready to sacrifice them for a new coat? ABSOLUTELY YES.

Good riddance to Tisci, he did not delivered and I think he won't anymore. He is too unbothered by the reality.

I hope Daniel take this second chance serious and doesn't f*** it up. He is lucky because the fashion crowd doesn't treat "difficult" designer very well.

Riccardo can always come back to Paris. He needs to be in a couture house again. With his connection I'm sure he already planned his next move.

Lee for Burberry sounds promising. I mean, working from London in a environment he understand can be interesting. And I bet his non-competition agreement end next year…

As for Riccardo…Burberry was a teaching experience for him. I think that HF is what suits him best. He should maybe relaunch his own brand or go back to LVMH…But there’s literally no brand left there. He could be great for Dior.
It depends if MGC’s contract ends in 2023 or 2024.

Burberry is in a healthy financial state so, this is the perfect time for them to capitalize on the buzz around Lee.

Lee for the Burbs makes WAY more sense, though hopefully he cleans up his act.

Hopefully Tisci can be free to go and do Versace like he was always meant to.

Do you think Donatella is ready to share the stage or let someone else reign now that there’s commercial success?
I’m kinda afraid that the Versace thing never happens…

It's not her company anymore and she's due for retirement.

Finally! Thank God, this cannot happen sooner enough. I mean I'm sorry to say but Tisci has been a disaster since day one. My opinion. He did the whole streetwear/Hypebeast/Kanye thing when other brands were doing it better and more authentically.

I don't think Daniel is a good fit either. I'm not sure whether his brand of femininity would work for Burberry but since Tisci razed all of that to the ground I guess it's fair go? And we definitely don't want Bottega V2.

I hope the suits at Burberry learned their lesson. This is what happens when you make executive decisions based on trends. They may have thought Bailey's work was out of step with the then streetwear mood only to settle with Tisci who I think fared way worse than Bailey's last years. And the scrambling ND absurd amount of money that got pumped into China was crazy and it still didn't work. Now that tailored dressing is making a return they want Daniel?

Cool, like style, really cannot be bought. And it can't be replicated either. See Hedi Slimane.

Just curious, from a financial point of view, why are they looking to replace Tisci? Isn't Burberry doing quite well under his artistic direction in terms of $$? Last I heard, all that cheap-logo-branded stuff was selling well in markets like Asia?

Which begs the question: if Tisci can't make Burberry a "hit" with all his logo t-shirts and cheap merchandise, then who can? And what would that even look like?

If Daniel Lee is appointed as Artistic Director, it will signal that Burberry wants to move away from the whole hypebeast market and back towards a bit more of a subdued and elegant aesthetic that could resonate with a more mature demographic. It seems to me that during Tisci's appointment, Burberry seems to have lost that market completely. Those women and men looking for classic and timeless pieces (that were so signature under Christopher Bailey) seemed to have moved on to other brands at a complete loss to Burberry.

The "hype" of the brand may have increased under Tisci, but at what cost?

Agree that Claire can do quite a conservative brand like Burberry while it is very unlikely that Lee can replicate Bottega's success for Burberry as I don't see the catalysis between the designer and the brand. Jil Sander makes more sense for Lee if Renzo Rosso wants to revive the brand.

for christ sake just call Claire Waight Keller.

She was originally supposed to take over at Ralph Lauren after Chloe until Ralph changed his mind at the last minute. So not really a bad idea.

But would it just be more of the same of what we had with Christopher Bailey? Interestingly both are Gucci alumni from the Tom Ford era.
