San Francisco Shopping

has anyone been to loehmann's in sf lately? i got a $100 gift card from them in the last flyer they sent me (yeah!!!) but it expires monday. I live in sacramento and the loehmanns here is so so. I'm wondering if it's worth the drive to sf, if there's anything good there.
It's most definitely worth the drive to San Francisco to shop. The Sacramento area has greatly improved over the past ten years in terms of shopping but it still doesn't compare to San Francisco. I have plenty of family and friends in Sacramento, Roseville and Tahoe areas...but everytime I go to visit, I can't wait to 'escape' to San Francisco to shop.:bounce: If possible, spend a night. San Fran is only a couple of hours away but you wouldn't have to worry about the traffic and you could just take your time.:flower:

Definitely do not take the I-5 up if this is your first time going up - yes, everyone says it cuts the drive time to only 5-6 hours (depending on how fast you drive) in comparison to taking the 101, but oh my God, it's so barren and boring.
So, true! So true! If you don't come up often, definitely take 101. And if you have plenty of time so spare, take the beautiful coastal highway -- 1!! (I'm really missing California right now... )

But as a native Californian who has seen it all already, this is good advice:

Or if you choose to fly - take jetblue ($39-$49/each way with two weeks advance) or southwest (I believe it's currently $49 last I checked) into Oakland Airport and from there you can take the BART into the city - which is what I normally do when I fly back home to and from Los Angeles. It's hassle free - and you don't have to deal with traffic....

Happy Shopping in San Francisco! ^_^

Thanks tangerine! I'll print out your post and add some notes from other posts... :flower:

Well, time to report my findings I guess: SF is a very nice city, cosy and charming somehow. I really liked what I saw of it! ^_^

I didn't have the opportunity to spend a lot of time in the city since I was sort of trapped in the suburbs (=Cupertino) unfortunately...

I managed to find my way to The Archive, and I have to say that the shop itself is stylish and the staff was nice: they seemed friendly and attentative, but not intrusive in any way. They greeted me, asked me if I was looking for something in particular and left me alone to browse, after they pointed out that they would be happy to answer questions and had other sizes that might not be on display, when I said I was only looking. Perfect for me! I have to say that the selection was a bit disappointing though.

The Prada selection at Neiman Marcus was disgusting, mostly nylon/logowear. Nothing interesting really. Prada at Geary seems to be women's only, it was closed when I was there...

Loehmann's was just trash, at least when I was there; I realise their stock changes, but based from what I saw I wouldn't return.

Everything wasn't bad though, I saw some great stuff at Macy's mens store I think, like TSE cashmere and other stuff.

I wish I could've spent a week or so shopping, because I'm sure there has to be good stuff to find, only I didn't have time to explore. I never made it to Hayes Valley, for instance...

barneys is FINALLY coming to san francisco!!

^Pazza, I'm waaaay past due for a visit with the family. I'm working on it!:P

Some friends here in Chicago are planning a visit to SF and were asking for advice in regards to where to go, shop, etc. I told them about a place I always enjoyed shopping when I didn't want to deal with the madness at Union Square and the mediocrity at Stonestown: Union Street. Mostly locals and some cute eateries there, too...

Yes that´s a good area! I especially like Riley James on Fillmore and Union. They have 2 seperate stores, one women and a smaller mens. But the stuff is not cheap!

Just across the hill is Pacific Heights, another smaller but also nice area with cafés and restaurants. There is a nice store with Swedish/ North European designer clothes: Flicka Boutique 1932 Fillmore St. (flicka means girl in Swedish).

Well, thanks a lot Kurogoma  ...you've just made me even more homesick.

If Barneys is replacing the old FAO Schwartz (prime real estate, if you ask me), I must ask...what happened to FAO Schwartz? Out of business?:o

Didn't FAO Schwartz go bankrupt or something? The only two I know of are in NYC and in Las Vegas. DC had one, in Tysons, it was huge but closed and was replaced by a furniture store.

Ahhh...bummer! I will be there Sept 2-10!

So this would make 2 Zara stores in San Francisco now?

There's also the original Susan in Burlingame, and the last time I went there is seemed as though their Lanvin collection was more extensive than the laurel heights location, but I could be wrong. They might have lower sales tax is Burlingame as well, but I could be wrong about that as well. I also heard Alber likes to eat at Coppenhagen Bakery on Burlingame Ave... I just made that up, so I could be wrong about that as well.

I am quite excited abouted the new bloomingdales as I live a block away from it...I hope its more akin to the bloomingdales in Soho as a opposed to their standard stores. Anyways, the food court is going to be the t*ts!
