The Paper-Bag Waist

Thanks Softgrey! I will definitely do the bustier when I see one that doesn't look like a corset (I'm looking for something simple with no lace and ribbons). The pieces in the picture are all that I managed to scrounge up using items that I already have. Just out of curiosity, what part was disagreeable? As I said in my post, I don't really know what I'm talking about so everything should be taken witha grain of salt. I just love to give my opinions anyways haha.

For curvier ladies, I would suggest cinching the pants or skirt around the tiniest part of your waist. If you are going for the pants, stay far, far away from skinnies, boot-cuts or tapered-legs. Instead, look for trouser fits that just skim the body and flow straight down from the hips or the widest part of the thighs.

this part does not apply to paperbag waist pants...
but to trousers and pants generally....
this is an exception to that general rule ....
since by definition...a paperbag waist pant is ALWAYS baggy...

**this is why general rules are useless at a more advance stage...
you have to be specific to the individual body and garment...

imo...curvy women simply should not try this...
:ninja:....

there is a better option that achieves the same desired result...
they should opt for my suggestion of a wider leg pant with a wide low waistband that would elongate rather than shorten their silhouette..
(or the one in vogue!)

the paperbag shortens the torso too much....and adds thickness...
so even though it elongates the leg...
it throws the entire silhouette out of balance...
it just makes you look short and wide...
not good...
...

i think that is why it is often worn rolled up or tucked in...
to peg the leg and give it more shape...
but also to narrow the silhouette a bit...

i did think that a skirt would be easier...
but i am not finding it so...
i feel like i am wearing a grass hula skirt...
it's just too much volume...

...

i just think there are much better options...
i do like the soft pleats that i am seeing...
those seem to work beautifully...
like old donna karan...
...

I guess I may be watering down the true definition of the paper bag waist then. Anyways, the pair of pants I posted from Lucky Mag don't seem to have too much material around the waist. I was imagining a normal pair of pants with a waistband that is flat on the belly and then the paper bag part would be a bit of fabric extending up from that waistband. It gives the same look without all of the extra fabric.

I think this is what half of this thread is about..this new, watered-down paper bag waist, which i think is much more flattering than the 80's style softgrey is referring to...

well then that is not a paper bag and you are saying the same as me...
that a real paper bag would not actually be very flattering on most...

Ok ok! I give in, you've made your point :P But if it looks like a paper bag waist, you might as well call it that. Or we could new style and old style  Or Anna's style and 80's style. Anyways, now you've made me really curious and eager to try on the style that you're referring to just to see how all that bunching works on my own body. In the end, I'm still that little girl who loves to play dress-up

I really love this look. I had some cream pants like this back in the 80's & I wore them constantly! I cant wait for this to come out in stores.

i like high waisted pants in general but not tapered, they look bad then unless your really skinny, but with a straight wide pant, it really really works, it gives you a different look, very hepburn yet very modern at the same time. I bought 2 high waisted pants ( decently wide leg ) and they make me look so different and my guy friends it looked sexy , the fear of high waists is that they look "grandma" or "soccer mom" but with a straight wide leg , it eliminates that and creates a smart look . Another thing in the 80s , paper bag waists were worn with very tapered pants , the new ones are straight wide legs so its a more flattering look.

hmm.. it's an interesting trend, but I think only certain styles of bottoms look alright with paper bag waists..

I actually got inspired by this idea I decided to make my own out of grey tweed. I'm almost done with a little tweeking to do. It's a tight pencil skirt with a paperbag waist tied at the waist by a skinny black belt. I hope to post a pic up if I can...

for those who don't know, the skirt is actually low-waisted, and I'm just wearing with a belt because low-waist bores me. I'm so happy I foud paper bag waist

*goes into closet, takes out all low-slung skirts and belts, and starts pairing them together to see if any make the look*

This is considered a paper-bag waist, no?

i think they look best on short shorts. i've seen them in an anne klein collection. they wear so cute. but a slim top is need to balance.
