UK Vogue May 2020 : Rihanna by Steven Klein

Rihanna is one of a few that could pass as a model. I don't mind she's a celeb. Her beauty is breathtaking. I like these covers.

Honestly she looks okay and good for Steven Klein that he shot his first British vogue cover.
But I just can't stand Rihanna ! Is she anouncing anything important? It's too often. I'm so sick of her.
It isn’t his first. He shot one or two covers in the early 90s/late 80s.

I don't wanna be the one who say this but... I'll be the one: people like the covers because who she is, nos because of the execution. If the cover subject wasn't her, you would be thrashing it.

I'll be the first one to say that I don't like the way Edward is hyping up having a durag on the cover. A durag might be a big cultural touchpaper in America - I'm aware of that - BUT THIS IS BRITAIN and as far as I'm aware, nobody cares about anyone wearing a durag, everyone's free to wear one if they like, it's never been a big deal in this country, and nobody would be taken aback by seeing one on a cover.

Yet it's being lauded as an event thats on a par with Rihanna being the first woman to set foot on Mars while using the time spent in spaceflight to hammer out the cure for cancer.

Which shows you just how much Edward angles his covers towards an American audience rather than the one at home. He wants that international spotlight on him. He's all for grabbing headlines by expanding 'representation' in the magazine - but producing something that's recognisably British is not his priority. The one thing he doesn't care to represent is the country.

Sorry, but nope. I know, I know - she hasn't been on the covers for some time already, but I still haven't recovered from the overdose of her presence in magazines. And also can't relate to Rihanna being better than a model, she is very photogenic - true, but that is it. I can't, it all makes me sigh and then cry.

and just when I thought I‘ve already seen every horrible cover this year...

I sometimes wonder if you don't lose it when you work abroad for too long, that British vantage point. Anna Wintour's stint at British Vogue was also misplaced as I remember and the fact that she took up a job at US House & Leisure should indicate how eager she was to get out.
In Edward's case, he has been successful when it came to racial diversity because to be fair Alexandra already covered the bases with regards to age and shape. But I still don't see how this tenure speaks to a British audience. And no amount of editorials filled with beige Macks will make up for that.

^Well styling, photography, make up jobs are jobs so linked to you personally that spending days around certain people in specific cities affect you a lot professionally. So Edward is definitely more American than British now.

Back to these covers, I despise them. I want Glamour. I prefer some reinterpretation of 50s Vogue covers a million times over that.

Given the fact last month's Jodie Comer cover was utterly divine, I am willing to let these slide. I'm always down for Rihanna, think she can photograph beautifully, is always down for a new look but both these covers do zilch for me. Forgettable, depressing and not a patch on 2018's September cover!

Looks like Australia got the better of this collaboration thing. Those previews are dreadful

finally something decent from Rihanna and something decent from Edward too. I can say it`s fashion. The rest of the magazine is a waste of paper and budget. even colour scheme of eds looking pretty much the same
Sean Thomas looking even more Bruce Weber than Alasdair McLellan, i think he realised that conde cant hire him, so he can safely occupy this niche... Magazines are still missing Weber`s vibe ( i`m not, can`t stand him)
