US Elle November 2020 : Kamala Harris by Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin

What a coup for Elle.

Though this leaves me cold.

Why in Black and White though? Her color should've been celebrated. The First Black Woman VP Nominee.

But but but Samira is the new power editor??? Lol

Kamala is brave. A month before elections, she covers Elle. I can already see the headlines in Fox News and other conservative media - "Kamala wearing thousand dollar clothes pretends to fight for the underprivileged." Watch them take the AOC route yet again.

Love that I&V shot this of course. And love seeing Kamala on a cover.

It’s not a bad cover, but I don’t like she shot they used. With the hand placement and the invisible neck it looks like someone is holding a Kamala mask in front of their face.

That was one of my first thoughts, too. Meanwhile they have nothing to say about that orange turd writing off $70,000 for hair care.

I think it was smart of her to do Elle rather than Vogue, though. Less of an elitist connotation with the general public.

This is actually quite lovely. I understand that it would be a huge gamble to put her on the December cover if Biden doesn’t win, which hopefully WON’T be the case.

The shot looks dignified without coming across vain unlike that cover of Beto for VF a year ago.

This was probably not the wisest idea, it's just too soon. We all saw what happened to Beto. What if this counts against her/them? I'm not against her doing interviews, but a cover is an entirely different ballgame.

I don't like the cover either. Font is too harsh, the random office chair in the outdoors, and the image is just not coverworthy. Doesnt look like I&V's work at all.

Fair points, but at least this cover doesn’t have a tone deaf quote about being born into it.

This happened to Beto, Stacey Abrams & Pete Buttigieg. It’s way too soon. They could have chose to reveal it in November. We’d know who the winner is by then

I’d also add that at the time, Beto was one of something like 20+ candidates and had just lost his senate election to one of the least popular senators in America. That, combined with his entitled tone really put people off. Obama had the GQ September cover in 2017, right before he was elected. It’s all about tone. Even though I don’t like this cover much, it is neither frivolous nor grandiose and since they’re labeling it a “women in politics” issue, I assume other politicians will be featured. VP run aside, Harris is a dominant force in American politics and a household name. If the Biden/Harris ticket doesn’t win, people will be far too concerned with other things to be worrying about an Elle cover.

What covers hurt Abrams and Buttigieg?

If a cover has to happen, then Elle makes more sense at the moment - as a magazine, it's more synonymous with women's issues than the elitist Vogue, which has also recently acquired the tarnish of drama and mismanagement.

I dunno, I still think it's dicey, lol. The atmosphere is not the same as the time when Obama campaigned. They are campaigning against someone who is not afraid to roll in the gutter and who would take any cheap shot, even this cover.

As for Nina's Elle, the last political reporting the magazine did of note was a shady profile on Louise Linton. And when I say 'of note', read between the lines. I don't think I have faith in HF Nina to deal with an exclusive of this magnitude appropriately. The cover alone tells me she mucked it up, but that's purely speculative. Who knows, maybe the gamble will pay off for Kamala. I recall the last time HRC refused to appear on covers and it didn't exactly help her cause.

Maybe all of it is not for haircare, some of the budget could be for makeup, lol.

Its an okay shot, its not really that great, but honestly stop putting politicians on fashion magazine covers, they eventually end up being a joke, and I certainly dont want to be reminded that this is my only option to vote for in November. What happened to escapism?

Kamala is a woman. She is held to a higher standard than Obama. Unfair, but it's the reality in American politics.

We live in a world where a male politician can wear Tom Ford, but a woman will be chastised if she doesn't wear a $6.99 Mom jeans.

And the fact that she's a dominant force in American politics is exactly why this was a terrible idea.

SO HAPPY to see her !!!!!!! Love the cover, I wish it was in color but it's still a great image anyways.

Point well made, but I don’t see why she should have to kowtow to these sexist Political conventions. That’s a losing game. The republicans are already saying she slept her way to the top among other nasty things, there is nothing she can do to avoid criticism, sexist or otherwise, by her political opponents. If there’s one thing Trump knows, it’s the power of press. ALL press. Could you imagine him ever turning down a magazine cover? AOC understands this too. She would not be as influential and famous as she is were it not for all the bad press she received from Fox News, etc. No one who was planning on voting for Biden/Harris is going to rescind their vote based on an Elle cover. However I think a flattering article about Harris, aimed at young female voters (not a group that has high voter turnout) emphasizing Harris over Biden could potentially help inspire a few people to commit to voting. Less “Trump sucks so you better vote for the other guy” and more “Here’s a piece on an aspirational figure you could vote for!” is a good thing in my book. If the Fox News crowd goes after this article it will just make Harris that much more appealing to the far-left crowd that may not be sold on her yet.

These are true. Those who will believe the sexist remarks are those who were never really planning to vote for her anyway.

However, in this highly contentious election, I assumed that they would have been very calculated, cautious, and would avoid literally anything that could cause negative publicity.

Also, they'd tread lightly so as not to lose stray republicans who they equally need at this point

There’s a new pic in the second slide. Shot in a studio. A close up of the same pose in the same outfit in a different angle. So the background on the cover was photoshopped I assume.
