US Vogue April 2014 : Kim Kardashian & Kanye West by Annie Leibovitz

The Kimye Vogue Sales Are In & They’re Not Looking Good

Preliminary numbers for Kimye’s Vogue cover have been released and according to The NY Post, it sold under expectations. While previous cover stars like Beyonce and First Lady Michelle Obama sold 355,000 and 269,000 respectively, Josh Gary, vice president at Mag Net Data, predicts that the amount of the Kim Kardashian and Kanye West cover will come in at only 250,000 issues. The cover certainly had its share of controversy with multiple celebrities weighing in and readers threatening to cancel subscriptions. Regardless of the numbers though, it seems to not have affected the couple’s ties to fashion. The two attended the 2014 Met Gala earlier this week which was hosted by Vogue’s editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, wearing Lanvin and snapping pictures with designers like Balmain’s Olivier Rousteing.

I thought they were saying the issue sold like mad.

It says figures have been 'released' - has Conde Nast released any figures? I think until that it is indeed the case we can't really read too much into it.

There's so much mystery around how well this issue has performed. Fashionista.com just posted this:

BOOSTED 'VOGUE' SALES 20 PERCENT
Eliza Brooke

Seems like the cover was a great idea after all.

The Kim Kardashian and Kanye West issue of Vogue may have inspired a wave of outrage and fury among readers, but it seems that the #WorldsMostTalkedAboutCover kind of killed it on newsstands.

According to preliminary numbers from MagNet Data, which gathers sales data from a network of magazine wholesalers in the U.S., the Kimye cover has done 20 percent better than the previous month's Rihanna-fronted issue.

MagNet VP Josh Gary adds that compared against Vogue's other 2014 covers — those featuring Cate Blanchett, Lena Dunham and Rihanna — sales for the issue rose 13.5 percent. Compared to the six months prior, that's a 35 percent improvement. And over the last year, it's a 10 percent sales improvement.

So it seems baiting the masses with the paparazzi-friendly couple did work out pretty well for the buttoned-up glossy.

Not sure how accurate it is...we'll just have to wait for Conde Nast to release the official figures.

The 2nd article doesn't negate the first one. Sales could have been better than previous months or last year's April issue and still be way behind early estimates.

^the voice of reason;) Didn't Rihannas cover do quite poorly?

Well April issue outselling the March one is not an usual occurrence, so they did great. Not surprised Rihanna is turning out to be not a great seller for them, once again. It was such an unappealing cover!

According to Audit Media as posted by NY Post, the issue sold around 250K, they are the ones with actual selling numbers not Conde Nast so its official, the issue didn't bomb. But wow, it didn't do crazy well like i thought it would, either. I thought it would go near 400K easily, but i guess those of us who regulary buy, and skipped this issue, did matter after all.

Actually April outselling March is a pretty big deal. March is the second biggest issue of the year. I'm sure the hundreds of advertisers who bought ads can't be too happy that it only sold 200,000 copies.

^ Yes, it's most certainly a big deal i agree, actually its shocking for a March issue to do only a little over 200,000 copies, and goes to show it does matter who is on the cover of these big issues after all.

Here is the NY Post article, they got the numbers from Mag Net Data so it seems pretty final:

Anna Wintour’s decision to put Kim Kardashian with Kanye West on the cover of the April issue of Vogue was originally seen as a controversial move for the brand, but one which had huge upside if the ensuing uproar drew new readers to newsstands.

Early estimates were saying the controversy was going to push sales to the 400,000-to-500,000 level, easily outselling the 355,000 copies that Beyoncé sold on newsstands for the March 2013 cover, and also eclipsing the year-ago April cover of Michelle Obama that sold around 269,000.

Now, as the “Kimye” issue goes off sale and real numbers begin to trickle in, it looks like actual sales will fall way below early estimates.
“The trends for Kim K. are definitely better than the prior month with Rihanna, to the tune of 20 percent better,” said Josh Gary, vice president at Mag Net Data, who uses scan data from wholesalers that cover about 98 percent of the market.

“I’d argue that if you peg last year’s Michelle Obama at 269,000, this issue will net out around 250,000,” said Gary.

In the first half of 2013, Vogue sold on average 269,740 copies a month at newsstands, according to the Alliance of Audited Media, and had another 930,446 paid subscriptions.

It also gave away an average of 46,579 free issues, described as “verified copies” by AAM, for a total print circulation of 1,246,765.
Vogue spokeswoman Hildy Kuryk said, “We never comment on sales figures.”

Do they count only copies sold in the States? The issue is still on sale here in Europe (I just bought my copy) and I guess worldwide. It would make a slight difference. I don't think these estimates are accurate.

^Well, 250 000 is a very unprecise estimate;) They can probably make projections based on previous months and issues.

That source is credible, and it's a US title so those figures are for US. With the massive publicity, they were expecting over 400k for sure. Rihanna + Kimye is pitiful for Vogue's standards.

shame on you anna wintour for agreeing to this

shame on you kanye for being a prop to kim kardashian.. And for a desperate effort to mould kim into something she is not.

Shame on kim for making it near impossible for kendall jenner to be taken seriously as a fashion model

this is a huge fail. Enjoying reading this thread tho :rolleye:

yes to all of this.

Anna Wintour Implies Kim Kardashian and Kanye West Are Not ‘Deeply Tasteful’

Nolan Feeney @NolanFeeney Nov. 19, 2014

"I hope another Kim Kardashian comes this year!" said the Vogue editor

When Vogue magazine put (a fully clothed) Kim Kardashian and Kanye West on its cover earlier this year with the unwieldy hashtag #worldsmosttalkedaboutcouple, some accused the magazine of being desperate for buzz. (Never mind that the issue’s sales reportedly failed to meet expectations.)

But during a talk at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Monday, Vogue editor Anna Wintour said being the #worldsmosttalkedaboutmagazine has always been the goal — while also suggesting that the two stars are not “deeply tasteful” people.

“I think if we just remain deeply tasteful and just put deeply tasteful people on the cover it would be a rather boring magazine,” Wintour said. (Is she unaware that, as far as Kim covers go, the Vogue appearance was about as tasteful as you can get? Did the Paper cover break the Internet at Condé Nast?) “Nobody would talk about us. It’s very important that people do talk about us.”

Wintour sounds like she’s throwing a lot of shade at the couple, but the rest of the editor’s comments appear to be complimentary. She said Estée Lauder’s decision to make Kardashian’s half-sister Kendall Jenner their new face was “fantastic,” and Wintour also said she has a long history of putting controversial celebrities (such as Madonna) on the cover of the magazine and helping make them “part of the establishment.”

“I hope another Kim Kardashian comes this year!” Wintour concluded. The Internet has been warned.
