US Vogue August 2021 : Dr. Jill Biden by Annie Leibovitz

It's very much a classic First Lady cover by Annie. She looks lovely. Just wish the editorial was longer.

it's clearly made for the middle aged women

This cover story is a posture of power from the magazine, rather than a feature designed to provide anything of real interest to anyone.

Nothing about Vogue is made for women of a certain age. Young people might have a degree of disposable income and a desire to spend it whatever way the wind blows, but older women have even more money... and standards for what to spend it on, standards which Vogue has neither the inclination nor the ability to meet these days.

The cover is too pedestrian for my liking, but I'm oddly into the one where she is biting the pencil. It's unexpected for a First Lady, and I think it gives her character.

This time is different. During Michelle's years was mostly about fashion, and it was fun to see the other side of a first lady. But if you see this year, you will find the clear the politic position from Vogue, Anna and CN, which is quite bad for media (same case with Fox News for the other side). I know the last four years were a total disaster, but if you turn a fashion (sport, cultural, etc) magazine into a politic title, it's not good at all. But what can you expect from Miss Wintour???

Oh I love it! Setting looks stunning, and the effortless vibe suits her personal style. At this stage it is what it is when it comes to Annie shooting political figures. You're never going to get edgy.
Anna is really ramping it up with the cover subjects this year. And it has been a record-breaking year for female political figures on fashion magazine covers. Wonder who will cover Marjorie Taylor Greene, lol.

They weren't supposed to release this cover so soon, wonder what happened.

Yes it’s conventional but she looks great in classic Annie style and these images will definitely live on in history as opposed to kamalas very uniconic shoot.

Interesting, I think Jill Biden does have a fashion following/signature style. But I get the impression that's not the route her team wants to take. That of a style star. You can argue 'but she's on the cover of Vogue' but American Vogue is no longer a hardcore fashion magazine. They are, as you say, a cultural magazine. What Vanity Fair used to be, but without the rich journalism. Who knows, maybe September will be a return to the norm. But one thing is for certain, they need to get a proper creative director. I don't know what the magazine stands for anymore, stylistically speaking.

Miss Biden looks lovely in that ODLR dress but I can't believe this was shot by Annie. And how Anna thinks this image is the perfect cover choice. :ermm::unsure:

I feel like the cover shot would have worked better for Vanity Fair. Because this cover doesn't do it for me. And what's up with the lazy layout? :ermm:

I absolutely love it. Love it. Quintessential Vogue for me! It really did capture her. Job well done.

I also love how refreshing and light the cover feels. Though, the image could have used a bit more brightness, but that's beside the point.

Anna and Annie are truly back in the White House.

I also love how they didn't feature Kamala and Jill on the March/September issues.

Anyone who claims that Vogue has never continually featured political figures and their family is either lying or ignorant.

Vogue has been featuring First ladies since the 1920's when Herbert Hoover's wife sat for the magazine. Here's a whole history of Vogue first lady shoots here

Jackie Kennedy was sketched for Vogue. You can see her Vogue appearances here

If you look at 1960s Vogue edited by Diana Vreeland you can see there is coverage of the WH social scene and DV even featured male cabinet members of the LBJ administration who were not household names...
I do recall one striking BW image of an LBJ appointee or cabinet member wearing a giant cowboy hat with his grandson....

Very strategic actually! These are usually the months when the magazine is at its thinnest and probably not big sellers, but both this one and the Kamala one are collectibles. The Kamala one even went into second print.

Can't get over how easy on the eye everything looks on the cover, even the Tipper Gore hair circa 2005.

True, but it's the third political cover this year after february and may. It's American Vogue, not so relevant to me. I expect fashion contents every month in every Vogue because this is Vogue!. But let's wait for the inside. I keep my comment about media with clear political position. It makes some noise in a bad way.

Except of course the first lady before Jill Biden, lol.

Was the shoot with Nancy and exclusive and do you know in which issue it appears? Looks like a candid to me. I recall the media had a very love/hate relationship with her. I'd be keen to read what Vogue wrote of her at the time.

Amanda Gorman may have been a part of the inauguration, but does that make her cover a political cover? Would you consider a Lady Gaga or Jennifer Lopez cover a political one if they appeared on the cover instead?

I'm sure September will follow a global theme like values, hope and creativity.

I found it political too, but it was a nice cover (hated only the horrible green masthead). If Gaga or JLO were on the cover after the event I would find political as well, no matter if they wearing haute couture photographed by Inez and Vinoodh. The mood of these covers its beyond obvious, that even my cat can spot.

Like the dress.

Also, the Neilia Biden eyebrow gene is SO strong..

And.. always interesting to see the most ageist comments towards women coming from men with a very enthusiastic interest (or maybe even a career) in womenswear.. don't bite the hand that feeds you comes to mind.
