Vanity Fair April 2019 : Beto O'Rourke by Annie Leibovitz

^Poor guy, hahaha. Of course Meghan couldn't wait to grill him over that cover, it's all she's got on him. But I must say every time I've heard even other news anchors discussing him (here and in America), they always bring up this 'splashy' cover with picture. The entitled 'I was born to do this' line, his Stepford wife, and the entire idea to kick start a campaign with a magazine cover. I don't know who told him it was a good idea? And I don't know why he only apologised now because It's too late, the damage is done.

This is also bad in a way for VF. I can see many candidates, even in the closing stages, avoid this magazine like the plague for fear of being tarred with the same Beto brush. It's now officially 'elitist' to appear in VF. Historically the magazine never gave someone such maximum exposure so soon. A cover, in both America and the UK??? Graydon must've cackled when he saw this.

I don't know who told him it was a good idea?

Probably himself - I can see how a man from a certain background goes through life, slowly fostering his dreams of political success, absorbing all the decades of examples of those who went before him... and just when he reaches the point of being happy with his presentation, he discovers the media landscape has changed and the welcome mat has been taken away for middle-aged white men, and that's a front on which he's ill-equipped to fight.

And keeping him on the front of the UK edition was one of the most monumentally useless cover decisions I have ever seen a magazine make - most of the newsstand issues I saw on sale had been turned around to show the supplement cover with Jessica Chastain.
