Vogue Italia March 2019 : Amber Valletta by Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott

This feels more like Thom Browne than Gucci to me. The Gucci ads were better.

Overall it’s not a bad cover. But her face looks weird. It looks like she’s sick.

Her face looks odd... what a waste of Amber...

And the theme... we only have one world, still you produce such mediocre work on paper made from precious trees?!

This is giving me US Vogue + Steven Klein + Camilla Nickerson

You have great models covering this magazine and yet the outcome is insanely pedestrian. It really is a matter of taste.

Even Vogue UA / Portugal is more VI than VI is.

Gonna wait for the editorial before I pass upon coherency. On its face, its very incoherent. The tagline, the styling, with that setting. I am confused.

Farnetti should thank his predecessors for establishing the prestige of this magazine. Had he been the EIC of a new Vogue edition, I don’t see his edition making a mark. It will be like those editions who get samples months before the start of the new season.

This is also one of the few reasons why I appreciate Edward’s leadership. When he uses Mert & Marcus, he imposes his vision on them and not the reverse. However, as with this edition, it has become Mert & Marcus’ playing field. Each cover shot by them seems like they’re trying out new techniques, and always end up looking undone. You basically see who’s in control.

Wonder if this comes wrapped in plastic like Self Service

Lots of 'One World' fashion chat going on now wrapped in totally unnecessary, throwaway, NON-biodegradable PLASTIC

Please tell me they are not mocking blackface, please tell me they are not mocking blackface, please tell me they are not trying to get attention where none would exist otherwise.

Stupid. ***. Cover.

Terribly awful! I can’t help imagine what Steven Meisel could have made of such a theme. At least something visually arresting.

Why not feature a designer known for sustainability on the cover if you really want to make a statement?

VI really has no vision anymore, nothing interesting to say or show.

She looks terribly unwell... like an early stage of walking dead... I can’t believe I am saying this about one of my absolute favourites :-(

I LOVE this! Everything about it, her worn out face expression, the setting, the clothes, its so fresh, and unexpected, feels like the good old VI, with that mix of chic & strangeness!

Now come back to me after i have seen the full ed, and issue, and i might hate it!

I got so excited when I read her name in the title and then I gasped at the ugliness and I don't know why I'm shocked becuase this is not surprising at all but she looks like a fu**ing dracula and it's disturbing how such a stunning supermodel books such a relevant cover and has a duo of photographers who are known to shoot such gorgeous photographs shoot her and you get this as an outcome! Amber's done the housewife theme a thousand times and not once did she look this bad doing it and I don't know who to blame it on. Is it photographers? Stylists? Makeup arists? Magazine editor? Fashion designers who made this trash? I don't know but this is such a let down. I'm embarrassed to admit even Kendall Jenner had a better cover last month.

The hair and makeup is really bad, but I like the idea.

This had all the ingredients to be good: you’ve got Amber, you’ve got M&M, you’ve got the concept.. but the execution is so poor.
First of all, the issue is a tribute to our planet which is okay but putting some plants and a cover line is not enough: why do not style her in Stella McCartney who has been very active in this field?
Secondly, why is she watering some plants that don’t look in need of it? Water is another big issue and must be saved. To me this looks like she’s wasting water. Is it some kind of provocation? Or maybe it’s just me seeing too much into this.
Lastly, how can you make Amber look this bad. That hair and makeup are terrible.

I’m so sorry to look at what Vogue Italia has become. Even when they get good models and ideas they can’t produce decent work. They need to change EIC, art director and more as soon as possible.

Jesus, these two are the biggest scammers in the fashion industry! This shot is textbook Klein with a dash of I&V. I dare Inez to make a shady remark about this.

I will say that the shot was unexpected, and I feel it may grow on me over time. Certainly the most avant-garde cover I've seen under Farneti. But what a ridiculous and contrived 'message.' It's like CN International sent out a memo that all issues out in March must have 'Save the Earth' as a theme, and Farneti got an intern to string together a sentence in haste. Cover doesn't relate to the tag at all.

While Amber isn't a brand model in the vein of Cindy or Gisele, nor is her work as experimental as Kate or Naomi, it's been some time since we've seen someone push the envelope with her on a shoot. I don't think she was the right cast for though. I wonder how someone like Lily Nova would've looked in it.

Thank you! I think @dodencebt was the one who recently asked what magazines should use instead of single-use wrapping? Recycled plastic, of course. There are so many recycling plants popping up everywhere and people are using the technology for everything from running tights to anoraks. Better still, do without. As for supplements, those should be printed to the back of magazines anyway. Most people chuck them anyway.
Envelopes for subscribers should be standardised.
