W Volume #8 : Gigi Hadid by Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott

At this point, you could believe in a conspiracy theory that there's a deliberate plan to run every Conde Nast print magazine into the ground in 2019.

I see so much of Kate here... and the last shot Debbie... the cover weirdly reminds me of Donatella Versace... I don’t know why though
I think they were going for Gigi as Debbie Harry. And I quite like the result, the regular Gigi is boring.

How this magazine is still alive, while the likes of Glamour are folding AMAZES me.

That layout, its like they're trying so hard for this magazine to close down. Like who on earth would accept that art direction?

Doing "Volumes" is no license to produce s*** like this.

Whatever happened to this magazine? :(:( I have not paid any attention to W since Alex White left and Edward Enninful took over the major styling duties (Prior to him taking the EIC role at British Vogue of course).

God, I used to love this magazine. Patrick McCarthy and Dennis Friedman, where the hell are you guys? W needs to be saved from the mediocrity of Tonchi's team.

Got this in the mail today. 106 pages.

Colin’s editorial is IMO some of the most impressive work I’ve seen come from W since this whole “volume” business came to be.

But why am I not surprised? He chose one of the best models to pull it off!

Another underwhelming issue and nail in the coffin for W. The Debbie Harry edit, Vogueing squad, Joan Collins, and Real Housewife on the closing page - any editor worth their salt would have easily converted this issue into a camp-themed special edition. Leave the Dodgson editorial (which however nice, is nothing original) for another issue, and ask Sara Moonves to step out of her comfort zone to build something original for a change. But it seems Tonchi can't even be bothered with the minimal resources to his disposal. He doesn't even make time in his 'busy' schedule running this magazine to pen an editor's letter. Smh.

i actually find the content kind of adorable.. joan collins and tinsley feels so unexpected but not unwelcome.

I like Joan Collins editorial. Rianne's editorial is so pedestrian.

Oh it definitely is. Each edit is strong on its own. Just a bit irked that he couldn't theme the issue to make it more cohesive. Camp is really hot right now. Between the rise and rise of Ryan Murphy, Drag Race icons popping up in various international Vogues, and Chanel selecting Vogueing artists for their recent Egypt collection after party, the timing for a camp issue would've been perfect. Foresight is so important in the magazine industry. A magazine like W, who doesn't publish monthly, would need that extra something to set them apart from the rest and make the issue more collectable.

Joan's feature is a real scream though. If not a bit cringey. The way they've described her r*pe, and subsequent decision to wed her r*pist is so.....casual and flightly. Like someone picking out a set of curtains. What's more worrying is that she may just regard it that way herself. But I guess it's a sign of the times...

It's a real shame W has the reputation it does now on the forums, because I do genuinely like Gigi's cover and feature. It's certainly not the worst I've seen from the magazine since it opted to do volumes as opposed to monthly issues. I would've certainly contemplated making the purchase too, if the paper quality wasn't as shocking as it is!

Also what's not to love about a Joan Collins feature? Secretly rooting for Edward Enninful to have Steven Meisel shoot Collins for British Vogue (like he did with Jane Fonda and Barbra Streisand for W).
