What Magazines Have You Bought/Received Recently?

i used to get all the teen magazines, but their fashions are so horrible and juvenille and the articles are the same thing, re-run every five years with new photo accompanyments.

my all time favorite magazine is vogue, but harper's and elle are close seconds. i read the magazines firstly for the fashion spreads and secondly for the essays (not articles, but the essays). i've got subscriptions to (all US):

vogue
harper's bazaar
marie claire
allure
elle
cosmo
W

i buy them on ebay.. the latest deal i got was two years of Cosmo for $8. nice, huh

A beautifully tanned Vivien Solari graces the cover of August's Harper's & Queen. Not a strong issue, but my favorite column "From Runway to Closet" reinvents Burberry's green suede trench (all buttoned-up and worn by Louise Pedersen on the runway) and tops it over a silk-belted burgendy dress with a retro print, which make for a gorgeous ensemble.

Halle Berry's August Bazaar issue is a disappointment, with the article "Do You Dress for Men or for Women" as the only amusement. Highlights from the article: "To men, your clothes are a reflection of you; to women, you are a reflection of your clothes." "If you mention that your dress is off-season to a men, it demonstrates frugality. Say the same thing to a woman and it is a form of apology." "You are only as good as your last jacket" (to woman). The annual "suit" editorial is now abbreviated to four pages (modelled by Isabeli, who had a silly facial expression that totally kills the elegance and feminine power of the suits). Karolina Kurkova and Raquel Zimmermann are boring, but Elise Crombez is a delight as usual.

August's Paris Vogue has become a hot item thanks to its Material coverGirl. Inside, Craig McDean shoots an amazing studio editorial with Gemma Ward. This is Gemma's most impressive work by far. Maybe McDean is the best photographer for her, and their new YSL campaign provides further proof. In a different editorial, Hannelore is made out to be a cold blonde modelling little black dresses. While the dress selection is lovely, Hannelore looks so lifeless, a far cry from her regal Dolce & Gabbana ads. Isabeli Fontana has a steamy editorial, but overall I find it more desperate and less sexy.

Another recommendation for editorial check-out is Liya Kebede and Erin Wasson by Michael Thompson for August's Italian Flair. Thompson's recent work for Flair shows that other than the generic celebrity closeup he does for W and Allure, he still has a few tricks up his sleeves. He even managed to make Carolyn Murphy look good in a moody, darkly sexy, depressed-housewife-on-the-hunt-for-a-young-man editorial. This time, more kudos to him for making Liya and Erin look good in neon-colored YSL skirt suits, among other ridiculous designs.

Old news: Tetyana B. has a cute editorial in Vogue Nippon's July issue, which had Gisele on the cover.

Reese Witherspoon (in Alberta Ferretti?) on the Sept Vanity Fair:

Got the new September Elle US with Jessica Simpson on the cover.

There are some new ads in it :

-Gucci with Daria
-Dior with Gisele, so colourful, i like them!
-Louis Vuitton with Scarlett and Christina
-YSL with Gemma
-Calvin Klein with Natalia (6 pics!)
-Versace with Hana, Caroline, Elise and Maria Carla
-Salvatore Ferragamo with Eugenia
-D&G with Heather, Stam..
-Hermes with Isabeli and Liliane
-BCBG with Anna Maria J.
-Max Studio with Tetyana
-Fendi with Eugenia (gorgeous!!!!)
-Blumarine with Jessica M.
-Boss Hugo Boss with Luca
-Missoni with Kate again (very 70s)

Jennifer Lopez in pink Gucci gown (worn by Anne Heche to this year's Tony Awards earlier) on the cover of US InStyle August:
ac_1.JPG

Most eye-popping quote in bold: "People are trying to paint me as this serial-marrying person or something, and I laught at it." Makes you ponder and ponder, huh?

Thanks for posting Liya's new Harper's & Queen cover. The dress is from Chloe. "Flirty secretary chic" sounds promising, but I do not know how it will be fleshed out at Harper's. Their fashion pictorials usually fall short from being substantial (recycled ideals, imitations, etc), but I hope they provide some good ideas for "secretary chic" because this is my favorite trend this coming fall.

And, the drum rolls, Kate Moss in YSL (Gong Li wore the same dress to the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year) for Sept UK Vogue by Nick Knight:

In the same issue, Patrick Demarchelier shoots Daria in "Out of Proportions":
pg5_large.jpg

Crisp, clean, just like Demarchelier's work with Julia Stegner earlier this year (his first editorial for UK Vogue in ages). Daria's David Sim editorial in Madonna's Paris Vogue does not compare.

That's all from the preview on the website, but I hear that my favorite model Angela Lindvall will be in it too. Can't wait!! This is going to be one fantastic buy.

And for the editorials, theres a cute Anne V with light brown hair, a comeback for Aurelie Claudel... and the rest is new faces.

V magazine with Alicia Keys on the cover is a bore. Sure, it features Anne V and Amanda Moore, but to little effect. The only special thing about it is a supersized, six-page Gisele Valentino campaign.

I will be adding those 2 wonderful editorials of Daria on my site later this week!

And I look forward to the addition. Thanks for the US Elle review. I have been wondering who'll appear in it. Last year, Mini Anden was a pleasant surprise. I like Anne V. too but it does not seem like there are many recognizeable faces. Not even Adrianna Lima?

Heather Marks & Lisa Cant (wearing Donna Karan) on the September Flair:

Jennifer Lopez is also on the cover of US Marie Claire September. I was surprised to see her cast against type--they put her in Theory pants in the pictorial! Ana Claudia Michele, Lauren Bush, and Ciara Nugent are featured in the editorials. Quite a substantial issue, but I think Lucky will be better.

Vogue Nippon September (Gemma Ward on cover) is a huge disappointment. It is not ad-heavy (4-pg foldout Louis Vuitton ad and Gemma Ward posing for a local Japanese brand and that's it) and, while there is an extensive shoe supplement, the model selection lacks sparks, especially for a September issue. I did not buy it, but this is what I remember: Spotlights were on Balenciaga and Michael Kors's last Celine collection. For Balenciaga, as many as 16 models (Daria and Diana Dondoe included) and celebrities each was on a black-and-white one-pager, wearing what seems like half of the looks Nicholas presented at the show. Michael Kors's farewell collection at Celine paid homage to professional women who have a thing for covered-up elegance and retro glamour, but Vogue Nippon cast three young models for this tribute editorial and has them playing on the grass outside a castle, which looks all wrong. Caroline Winberg dresses up as a Hitchcock heroine in fall's chic capes and brocade dresses walking around what looks to be a mean street. This editorial is nice to look at, but not particularly strong. Steven Meisel has been doing this sort of cinematic imitation for ages with Daria, Julia, and Elise for Vogue Italia. In a similar editorial, Quelle is also made out to be a movie character, presumably an abandoned mistress, wearing carbon copies of things that Caroline wore earlier. Fall's obsession with anything checkered and plaid is magnified in Paolo Roversi's editorial with Eugenia Volodina, entitled "Check Mate." It is signature Roversi (he even allowed the clothes' original colors to show!), but overall quite lifeless. The best editorial by far is with Lilliane F., who models signature looks from various designers. But this editorial came in a supplement.

I'm sort of amused how British mags always proudly declare that Mischa Barton is British, and then in America, she's always promoted as "American". LOL.

From Fashionweekdaily about the Sept. Bazaar:

For a photo feature in the magazine’s September fall fashion issue entitled, “Vive La Différence!” editor in chief, Glenda Bailey, along with creative director, Stephan Gan and fashion features director, Kristina O’Neill, created an eight-page spread featuring 16 of the world’s foremost premiere designers, photographed by Karl Lagerfeld.

Lagerfeld photographed Zac Posen, Burberry creative director, Christopher Bailey, Carolina Herrera, Kimora Lee Simmons, Karl Lagerfeld, Helmut Lang, Olivier Theyskens, Emanuel Ungaro creative director, Giambattista Valli, Donna Karan, and Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce of Dolce & Gabbana all in New York. In Paris, Valentino, Tommy Hilfiger, Rick Owens, Marc Jacobs, and Michael Kors all posed for the Chanel creative director’s lens.

In the end, the photos speak for themselves. Along with each photo is an accompanying quote by each designer commenting on his/her shoot-mate.

Jessica Simpson for US Elle September, wearing Ralph Lauren on the cover and in the pictorial. Yeah, plaid is big this season, and Vuitton is not the only brand cashing in on it.

The advertisements inside are beautiful; all the usuals are there except Givenchy. I will post a descriptive review once I return to the US and has the actual magazine in hand. The editorials, on the other hand, are not great at all. Anne V is the most perfect Lolita lounging around in fall's country-inspired, cozy ensembles. But other than that, Filipa Hamilton models tacky leopard ensembles, and Bekah Jenkins is wasted in a group editorial with unremarkable clothes. Finally, Aurelie Claudel's denim editorial is the absolute worst I have seen, talk about sinking into low heights. The styling is ghetto, and the jean selection is horrible. If I did not have a subscription to US Elle and were not an Anne V fan, I would skip this issue.

That is Daria, Natalia, and Gisele on the cover of September Vogue. The fold-out cover should also include Isabeli, Karolina, Liya, Hana (!), Gemma and Karen Elson. I like the photography. Gisele and Daria look beautiful. Can't wait to see what's inside.

Daria, Natalia and Gisele look amazing. I shall have to purchase that.

September Teen Vogue is a bore and much inferior to the August issue.

A quick preview for September US Bazaar with Gisele, in a glittery gown (even though I saw a similar gown on Custome National's runway, I think this might be Dior).

The magazines are available in the shops in the US as we speak, but I will still post reviews sometime in September (after I get home) so that readers abraod would know what's going on. ;)

Yesterday I purchased the September issues of W, New York Magazine (Fall Fashion Issue) and UK Elle. New York Magazine is great this month and features wonderful articles. They can be found at: New York Metro
