What Magazines Have You Bought/Received Recently?

US Vogue is terribly conservative, and dull. At the very least Vogue Italia has the Anna Piaggi spreads.

I buy these:

Arena Homme Plus

Vogue L'Uomo

Citizen K

i-D

Surface

Ashley Judd on August Marie Claire cover. She is as lovely here as she is on the cover of Bazaar. Great for an actress in her 30's. Now just give Naomi Watts the attention she deserves. ;)

It is the denim issue, but the accessories are more impressive than the jeans. From Ungaro's jewelled slingback, Chrsitian Loubotin's pink lizzard pumps, to Charles David's gold strappy heels and Hollywould's handbag (which costs a whopping $995), the accessories steal the show. James Jeans and Notify made it, but I'd like to see more from Citizens of Humanity, Seven for All Man Kind, Juicy Couture, and Joie.

Raica, the one-time Dior girl, has an editorial. "101 Ideas" is looking increasingly like Lucky's leftover. A couple nice suggestions and the rest is generic high-street stuff.

As for the ads, Paris Hilton's Guess ad by Ellen von Worth debuts, as does Ana Beatriz Barros for J Lo.

August ID goes to the lovely Angela Lindvall.

Recently bought:
the last issue of The Face
Was a tiny bit disappointed considering it was the last issue. :( The 'art' book that came with it was pretty good though. Kelis and Andre 3000 interview was cool. :)

Yen:
Aussie mag - has Candice Lake on the cover.

The concept of the cover is very cool. B) The magazine is good also, some of the writting is a bit amateurish but overall it's a great mag. :) The ed is nice also.

What else have I bought... recent i-D with Chiaki on the cover (sea-freight)... Vogue Paris with Diana D, the Helmut Newton supp is gorgeous. RIP.

That new i-D cover is interesting... I wonder what the swimming with sharks thing refers to. :flower:

Ashley Judd's July Bazaar cover. I heard Halle Berry got Aug. B)

Another Ashley, for Aug Marie Claire:

Summer Mag-Cover Run-Down:

Before summer actually arrived I thought we'd see a lot of Kirsten Dunst and Halle Berry because "Spiderman 2" and "Catwoman" appeared to be the action flicks of the season. But Dunst had an exclusive with Vogue (not Seventeen, Cosmo and the like, why?) and Halle Berry is only doing Bazaar.

The actresses that received the most publicity this summer actually do not have a movie out until September. Gwyneth Paltrow and Angelina Jolie each racked up 2 covers. I wonder if they'd run out of medium to promote the movie come September.

For actresses who actually have movies out, Kate Hudson got 2 major covers (Vogue, Allure), Catherine Zeta-Jones had to settle with W and InStyle (I thought she'd get Vogue), and Ashley Judd got Bazaar and Marie Claire.

Charlize Theron and Scarlett Johansson were hyped to epidemic proportions around Oscar time but fashionzines did not catch up until May or June, hence the overdue InStyle and Elle covers, respectively.

Surprisingly quiet are Cameron Diaz (nada!), Nicole Kidman (Vogue cover with no interview, but good move to avoid overexposure), Kate Beckinsale (nada! but really deserving), Thandie Newton (she and Liya Kebede are similar). The Troy girls received much attention in Britain, but not over here.

Waited patiently for the Keira Knightley UK Vogue to arrive. When I first saw the pictures on-line, I was really puzzled by the selection of the wardrobe, which I knew was from the fall lines but couldn't pinpoint the brands. It turns out that most were separates mixed & matched from local UK brands. The biggest international designer they used was Alberta Ferretti. In addition to the cover, there are 5 photographs inside, all by Tesh. The interview is shockingly short, just half a page long. Honestly, this pictorial fell short of my expectations, as is the magazine as a whole.

Four editorials:

"Summer Days" with Daria Werbowy modelling everything from swimsuits, caftans, to light jackets. Photographed by Calinne Day. It's the best Daria has looked in months, but you can tell it is heavily air-brushed. Actually, UK Vogue has appeared too air-brushed and glossy since its layout redesign this year.

"Miami Chic" with Jessica Miller and Nicole Trunfio lounging on the beach in easy separates. Terry Richardson's photography is lovely here. I like the cheeky spin he gives to otherwise serious-looking models. His "Chasing Blues" with Angela Lindvall from US Vogue December 2003 is a prime example. The cheeky factor does not work well when the model is already outwardly sexy. So, Nicole looks more "fit" for the mood than Jessica in this editorial.

"Beauty and the Beach," a swimsuit editorial with Jessica Miller by Raymond Meier and an accessories ed with Leticia Birkheuer, also by Meier. I usually like Meier's work, but it looks so glossed up here and his signature look is nowhere to be seen.

The content is a fairly weak read. The "Shopping Diary," which details the new conquests of four supposed fashion insiders, is especially lacking in substance. These "insiders" have no taste and dress badly. Clashing patterns, thrown-together unplanned, hippie-ish, dramatic layers--I gather this is how Brits dress like in real life, but their magazines have a more sophisticated and minimal approach to fashion.

Liz Hurley for Harper & Queen is a bore. There is not a single interesting page so I did not pick it up from the shop. So, taking a hiatus from Harper & Queen since buying it consecutively this year. On a related note, I wonder if Italian Flair will pick up soon? I have not bought it since the Gisele cover in April...

On my plane ride I picked up Elle, Vogue, and Bazar (all US). Vogue was kind of interesting, I never really read the articles on the cover celebrities but I was bored so I read Kirstens. It made her life sound a little TOO perfect. Money, hot boyfriend, great clothes, and shes still young. But I like her a lot. Elle was okay... I started to read the article on Christina Aguilera and her "new look", but I felt like a magazine was a billion years old because shes already got a different look. And the article on her was boring. I liked everything about Bazar except the article on Ashley Judd. I wasn't even about to read that... :innocent:

I think I'm going to start subscribing to Bazar, is it worth it? $8 is nothing but I dont want to get a magazine I flip through once and throw out. I already go through that with Vanity Fair (wich I used to LOVE).

Lea, What's in the B-G catalog for fall? Is it out yet?
I got this issue. It's really pre-fall. The fall issue usually has mens, and this doesn't. Editorials are Personal Effects with Jessica Stam, Luca, and Susan Eldridge

PersonalAffects_pic.jpg

Manor Born with Eugenia, Diana Dondoe, and Caroline Winberg.

SCBlondie: If you throw out Vanity Fair after one read, you prob. will be bored with Vogue, Bazaar, Elle, and W before you can finish them. As far as the writing content (for "coffee table" magazines) is concerned, Vanity Fair is uncontested. Vogue/Bazaar/Elle/W are notorious for glorifying celebrity's life and stardem, and they do not even do it in a tongue-in-cheek way. I subscribe to them for the fashion advertisement and editorials only.

Keira Knightley for UK Arena August 2004. Leave that pout to Scarlett Johansson please.

The autumn-winter ads are lovely, but the covers are not. A preview from US weekly shows:

Naomi Watts for US Elle in pink Chanel sweater and unbrushed blonde hair. This picture just screams "hooker in the morning after."
Natalie Portman for Allure in a cropped hairdo. The ear-to-ear smile is freaky.
Keira Knightley for US Cosmopolitan in a pink Chloe top and Chip & Pepper jeans. Her body is so skinny that her haid looks alien-big.
Letitia Casta for US Glamour.

By the way Adrianna Lima had a really beautiful editorial in Bazaar.

June-July Paris Vogue (with Natasha Poly on the cover) has a decent Daria editorial by Karl Lagerfeld. Daria is again a rich, bored housewife, though she looks quite wooden. The props are amazing though. I wish Chanel ads would look half as good.

I finally got a copy of "Another Magazine" with Kate Moss on the cover. The Kate editorial was great, because it was by Craig McDean! One of Kate Moss's best editorials this year, along with Tesh's "I Love Rock n Roll" from I-D, and another collaboration with Craig McDean "Noir" from W. The much talked-about Jessica Miller editorial by Mario Sorrenti was, on the other hand, quite overrated.

W Jewelry: cover girl Guinevere Van Seenus looks great (compared to how she usually looks nowadays). Raquel Zimmermann is in the multi-girl editorial.

It Flair July is shockingly bad, but I heard it's gonna pick up in August, with a slew of new autumn-winter ads.

Now, 2 recommendations for US magazines:

Teen Vogue with Anne Hathway:

3a_1_b.JPG

Heather Marks & Jeisha's Choice Calvin Klein ad debuts. The styling for the editorials is lovely: clashing patterns, lots of tweed/boucle skirts, youthful opulence... Teen Vogue really plays it to its strength. I'd have to hand it to Teen Vogue because I myself never know what to do with clashing patterns.

US Glamour August with Letitia Casta on the cover, wearing a John Galliano floral top and jeans from a new brand. Photographer: Patrick Demarchelier--huh, I thought he jumped ship because he wants to do exclusive high fashion stuff for Vogue, but I guess not. This is Glamour's denim issue, but it has 2 other fashion editorials and 1 beauty editorials, so it is really substantial.

I bought Instyle today even though I told myself never to buy it again after that horrible issue with Charlize on the cover. But I had to babysit all day and needed something to keep me occupied. What a waste of $3.99... I will never ever ever buy Instyle again.

I also bought Teen Vogue wich was pretty good. Even though it is less than half the size of InStyle I spent a lot more time with it.

Also the people I babysat for had People Magazine  with Britney Spears and her nasty fiance on the cover. I wanted to :yuk:

August US Elle with Naomi Watts.

bb_1_b.JPG

LOTS of new ads: Gucci, YSL, Prada, Calvin Klein Underwear, Armani Collezioni, Alessandro Dell'Acqua, Custo Barcelona, Vuitton, Dior, Versace.

eds:
Mega Watts by Gilles Bensimon. Profile of Naomi Watts. She's channelling Nicole Kidman again. Boring.

Je t'aime lou by Gilles Bensimon. Bohemian dresses and androgynous menswear on Lou Doillon. I think they could have done much better with her, but it's boring white background.

The Empress of Chic by Manuela Pavesi. Tasha Tilberg in Prada. Nice, and it's good to see Tasha.

Charmed, I'm Sure by Gilles Bensimon. Frankie Rayder in embroidery, sequins and furs. Ugh...more of the same from her. Looks like the ed with Filiippa from last month.

Personal Best by Gilles Bensimon. Sophie Dahl in eclectic looks from the season. Another piece that's ok. I'm surprised I haven't seen more of her this year...she seems to fit the mood of the season. She's be a great "comeback kid" like Guinevere and Karen Elson.

Overall, not a bad issue, but not great either. There's also a 1 pg. interview with Michael Kors on his new Michael line with Frankie and Caroline W. It was good to see some new ads, which I'm going to scan tomorrow.

Giving the board a boost!

A brief update on the magazines I've seen while I am away:

Vogue Italia
cb_1.JPG

The July issue of Vogue Italia is a stunner. It features a slew of multiple-page fall campaigns: Jessica Miller for Blumarine, Angela Lindvall for Roberto Cavalli, and the current Playboy cover girl Eva Herzigova for an Italian brand. On the cover are: Elise Crombez, Missy Rayder, Jessica Stam, Hannelore, Karen Elson, and one unknown. These girls are again shot by Steven Meisel in an "erotic-fantasy" editorial in which Hannelore, Missy, and Karen are often topless while wearing form-fitting skirt suits. The nudity seems more depressing than liberating and, when jutaxpositioned with suits and pencil skirts, it is as if Meisel is saying that while women have gained professional power, they could still be slaves to sex. Striking images.

I was not a fan of giving the cover to the Presley women, but this is a surprisingly substantial issue, filled by interviews with various female designers (Alice Temperley, Stella McCartney, Kate Spade, Carolina Herrera, just to name a few), which was perfect for leisure read while I was on the plane for 20+ hours. Gemma Ward and Lily Cole are in the editorial "Granny Chic" which is well-styled and, Gemma, whom I was not a fan of, is captivating in a black wig. Caroline Trentini's boots ed by R. Cameron is great, too, even though I do not think Vogue should predominantly use models between the age of 16-18.

I really enjoyed the August US Vogue actually. I'm still reading it, which is something new, since usually I flip through it then put it away. I like the Gemma Ward editorial, it's really cute. I even liked the 'age' editorial - but I suppose the only way they can go is up after last year's Age ed with Carolyn Murphy...

... Who's on the cover of August UK Vogue. Is it just me, or is anyone else finding UK Vogue has gone a bit down this year? The last few issues have been really quite boring. And they spelt Keira Knightley's name wrong on that cover :P

LOL about the misspelling of Keira's name. That's an astrocious oversight!

I hated the Carolyn Murphy cover, but I bought the magazine for two eds: Elise Crombez's seasonal preview, which showcased the key looks from various designers. But the styling is markedly off-beat: imagine a demure, black-tie Lanvin number made out to look like a showgirl uniform, accessorized by bunny ears and poker cards! Natasha V is an elegant, sensual, not to mention impecctably dressed mistress in the Karen Collins editorial, which again focused on lady-like dressing.

The upcoming autumn-winter will be a great season for professional women. The ubiquitous tweed jacket gets more colorful (burgendy, burgendy, burgendy) and narrower (cropped or gathered at the waist), and is often paired with a colorful blouse and a constellation of brooches. Magazines say that covered-up elegance (think layers) and luxurious accessories are major, but two-piece dressing is also making a major comeback. I am especially excited seeing "secretary chic," best exemplified by Dolce & Gabbana's jewel-encrusted sweaters and tweed pencil skirt (preferrably without the fur stole), and Marc Jacobs's neck-ribbon blouse and belted, high-waisted skirt.
