Asian Faces In High Fashion

mN0r0fj.gif

This season Giorgio Armani surpassed its own record with the addition of
two new faces from last season, making 10 the most walked yet.

And like any Armani collection that boast 60+ looks,
the number of looks worn by Asian men also increased, which is the norm for Armani,
and especially because of the Asian models in itself.

.

With its F/W 2018 campaign devoted to Asian faces (both men and women),
it appear the brand are taking significant measures to, perhaps,
reach their Asian audience at the core. Quite bold.

Whatever strategy they're trying to achieve here, it simply looks brighter
knowing they have put some effort and with positive changes. Bravo!

.

Here are some facts:

Models that walked the most: Tony Thornburg (11x), Paolo Roldan (8x), Hao Yun Xiang (8x) & Zhao Lei (7x)

Number of times an Asian model open show: thrice, FW16 by Tony; SS16 by Paolo; SS12 by Philip Huang

Number of times an Asian model close show: once, SS16 by Paolo

Since 2008 only Tony and Yun Xiang have front a mainline campaign, FW18 and FW17 respectively

Anyone ever noticed that Saint Laurent only uses Chiharu as a token Asian model since Vaccarello started as creative director? I'm so upset how heavily they depend on the Asia market for profit but they neglect Asian models. Biting the hand that feed them.

^ yeah they only used one asian model for their menswear ss19 show. i think there were rumors that SL was pushing for sora but didn't cuz of her exclusivity with LV.

Money talks.

It makes perfect sense. If one read the report below, one would realise just how finesse
a brand, like Zegna, could be in their strategic outlook in sustaining its prospects,
and ability to respond with ease - which they've just orchestrated that seamlessly this season.
At least representation wise.

After all, let's talk about the first time an Asian face open for the house
(as one could assume that this is a nod to their Asian customers), and worth noting of
the amount of Asian men cast, which also went up from a strong nine last season,
departure from the less impressive collections of prior years.

If it gets greener, we may as very well see more Asian faces then?
Well, for now, things are looking pretty good. Shall we see what next season bring.

Zegna back to growth in 2017, net income up 64% to €32.8 million

In the 2017 financial year, Italian luxury menswear group Ermenegildo Zegna was back on a positive track, posting a strong growth in revenue and profitability.

The Biella-based group recorded a revenue of €1.183 billion, up 2.3% at current exchange rates (+4.5% at constant exchange rates). EBITDA was €142 million, equivalent to 12% of sales, while net income leapt by 64%, reaching €32.8 million. The group’s net financial position also improved significantly, growing from €233 million to €316 million.

“Our performance is the result of the positive interaction of several factors, thanks to the new brand strategy we deployed in parallel with the appointment of Alessandro Sartori as Creative Director,” said Gildo Zegna, the group’s CEO. “The success of our collections, the development of capsule collections integrating our seasonal ones, a more intense marketing activity, notably the communication campaigns supporting the brand’s storytelling for specific products and events, allowed [Zegna] to tap the economic recovery currently characterising global markets,” added Gildo Zegna.

In 2017, sales were once more driven by exports, which accounted for 92% of the group’s consolidated revenue. China and Russia were Zegna’s leading markets, with Hong Kong, Macao, Singapore and Japan also posting a strong performance in the second half of the year.

“The countries which in 2017 enabled us to reverse the trend did confirm their results in early 2018, notably with positive sell-in figures for the Autumn/Winter 2018-19 collections. The USA did likewise, while recovery was weaker on our European markets,” said Gildo Zegna.

All of the group’s business areas grew in 2017, including the made-to-measure service, the new bespoke atelier in Milan and the couture line, which grew in double figures. In terms of product categories, footwear and fabrics posted excellent results.

Retail-wise, Zegna is planning new openings in Capri, Singapore, Beijing, Tokyo, Toronto and Mexico City. The existing Hong Kong and Beijing stores, and the one in Vancouver, will instead be extensively renovated and enlarged.

Groundbreaking scene at Prada's Men SS19 show.

Never in the history of Prada has there ever been this many Asian
walking in a single season. Jinjja!

What prompt for this casting decision all of a sudden?
There's gotta be a motive, with good reasons for this. What are they trying to say here,
or the objective at large?

.

Certainly this has been Prada's best cast in terms of inclusion and quantity.
See if this is a new beginning, and whether could keep up with the women's show.

Well, the stats conclude that 13 Asian men has ever walked for the house.
Before this season only eight models were cast.

Another impressive showing for Milan at the Roman house of Fendi.
Seriously, as if eight wasn't good enough until they gave us 13 men this season.

Curiosity has to ask - what gives? Is it really the collection that calls for Asian models
(after all, there were no Asian-inspired theme whatsoever) or it's simply the go-to,
business abiding to its Asian base, and presenting an inclusive cast
for the betterment of the brand and beyond.

Not complainging here. Just why and an observation.

.

Furthermore, what's obvious is that Fendi even went to the extent of partnering
with Jackson Wang to promote the brand on a larger scale
in reaching a key demographic, in hopes of driving sales. Fendi made the right move here.

Fendi's chief executive officer Serge Brunschwig said last week that China is already “extremely relevant” for the brand. “It’s the fastest developing and biggest market. For Fendi it continues to be a priority, in terms of investments, stores and resources.”

Looks like the men's show have relatively fare better than the women's show.

Definitely has been a steady rise from past seasons:

Ah thank you! Didn't realise/go that far to search that up. Nice to know even Asian opened/closed the the house too! (Interestingly, they started out with Japanese models and then here comes along, Kohei. Ha!)

And take that you're an older, yet avid individual with extensive knowledge on Asian models?

If so, if you want to, I'm sure we could all learn a thing or two from you. Post/inform us on anything Asian models of the past or current. :flower:

I'm completely surprised to see that many Asian models at Fendi. I think we finally turn a corner. I do want to see them using Asian models for campaigns. That gets more exposure.

^ Very surprising ain't it? And good idea about featuring in campagins. Maybe in couple years/seasons?

Like you said, think this is just the early stages for Fendi. If their sales goes up from here on out and remain consistent, and when that time calls for it, then we should see Asian models in their campaigns. After all, the CEO said positive things and particularly for China.

Will see if they step up to the plate.

I'd think the women would improve too, knowing they've tried to get more high-profile names in their camp and generate a bigger presence in China/Asia. Not sure about their recent sales. (And the rumour of FW18 campaign should probably signal a new "direction" for the brand...)

From ad campaigns, runway, fashion pictorials, beauty,
to on-spot locations for promotional engagement, and special guest invitations,
you name it, they've done it all to maintain a global brand that truly initiate
the narrative of bringing cultures closer via their imagery and collections.

Whether their execution is likable or not, it's the effort, consideration,
commitment and their social understanding that all puts Dolce & Gabbana as one
of the standard for a star-studded cast of the old, now and the future.

It pays off when the reception exceed one's doing, and keeps the rule
that made what it is today. A knowing of success.

An Indonesian tree, Japanese obi hems, bamboos as the backdrop,
and samurai swords as the finishing touch. What more?

For a large part, this season the scenery was quite Asian for Etro's conscious collection
of sustainability and biodiversity. And even if the Eastern elements were
just a part of the fabric, this was the brand's best cast yet. Tripled.
Can't blame them.

Evidently, it is indeed a stepping stone for the debut collection of Kim Jones.
But it really isn't a pretty picture for Asian models prior this season,
so just let the numbers speak for itself and come to your own conclusion.

And while curiosity never really goes away, one have to ask...

What happened this season - why the six Asian models?
And especially for the brand itself, why now? As we've seen, it's not like the house cared
or was attentive for the lack of Asian models in their cast over the 10+ years,
as a whole (either from the designer, creative team or the people in higher position).

Were there no sales generated from Asia to accomodate this bleak situation?
Not sure which geographic area made more revenue for the brand, but Asia alone doubled
the number of boutiques that of Europe alone (50+ to 20+), amazing!
Just how could they have that many stores in Asia and not cast Asian models...
after all, that's the go-to, M.O. of casting and "diversity" these days, no?

Maybe Dior Homme is just different, they're exempt and no one can say anything about it.
Who knows.

Lastly, with the new appointment of Yoon Ahn, who is of Korean background,
as the jewellery designer, could this also explain for the inclusion
of more Asian models for the next stage of Dior Homme.
With her face as a key member of the team, it may have looked inappropriate, optics wise.
Maybe this was it?

Will have to see more collections under the newly assembled partnership.
