Balmain S/S 11 Paris

Very rock chick.....few cool jackets/blazers, but it's very similar to previous seasons. Nothing new at all! I think they need to find a new look but are obviously sticking to what sells.

As they say, if it ain't broke.....

perhaps i am way behind but who is the model with the red jacket in post #89?? o_0

That look Daria wore, the white corset and jeans... that looks like something you could buy at GUESS...

well the studded leather jackets are TDF but not because its balmain, they just are...
also like the 7/8 length pants .... AND am very glad the shoulderpads are gone.
leaving the non groundbreaking -ness aside, some pieces are just plain hideous! ... ripped hot pants and ripped tights?

those red acid wash pants are just like diesel last season yeah..

i hate the ripped tights that's the only thing for me

Well, it looks like Dercanin has come down to earth a little bit. And I am a little disappointed to be honest. Why oh why? Next season, please lets go back to impratical ostentatious glamour! :innocent:

Whilst I'm not necessarily a fan of his work for Balmain, I have respect for what his aesthetic is. However, this collection, for me is a little confusing. I see it as a bit of an aftermath collection. That is, it seems almost like the Balmain aesthetic has peaked (last season with its heavy embellishment, its Baroque / couture influences, etc) and it appears he has nowhere to go.

This collection also seems like an attempt to draw in more customers with its wearability (and I assume its affordability) but at what cost? Wasn't the entire appeal of Balmain its exclusivity? Sure it was at times kitschy and over-the-top, but it was exclusive. It was one of the last houses that remained exclusive, if not only for its ridiculous price points. Not every woman could afford a $10,000 embellished dress that would be demode by the next season.

Overall, disappointed. I wanted a visual feast. After Milans toned-down glamour, I was really looking forward to Balmain. Where is the glamour this season?!

I actually like it,yes it is similar to last season but it's still punk rock! and as the music for the show said it, he's just doing it his way. This is just fashion,it will fade away soon ,just enjoy while you can, almost all designers can make pretty dresses in light pink and I appreciate him for going different.Although I agree and the corsette (sp?) looks like something by Guess it kinda looks out of place...and a comment on the show ...the girls walk weirdly it is very distracting I think they make the girls get in pants that are like 2 sizes smaller or something :l

I can't say I quite like it. Based solely on aesthetics, it's nice looking, just not my cup of tea. Also, am I the only one who got an Isabel Marant F.W 2010/11 vibe from this whole collection, just with more of a rocker edge? All those jackets and cropped pants with the simple heels made it seem a bit too uncanny. I swear, there was a pair of sequined red pants that came straight out of Isabel's show. Hm.

Nothing new, but I liked some of the sleevless shirts, I thought they draped over the girls nicely. I'm tired of so much bling slapped onto the blazers, they would be nicer without them, but I guess that's the Balmain look. It's all very Kate Moss, and to be honest it will definitely sell to the young fashionistas cashing in on the whole rock n roll trend.

i feel like last collection was not as much in magazines etc so he went back to this formula because it worked last time not that i'm complaining

I can't wait to see this in a faux punk/ taylor momsen inspired ed in vogue paris.

Why do people insist on blaming Decarnin? He's just milking the rock'n'roll trend for all it's worth, there's nothing difficult about it. Cheap or not, crap like this is popular, commercial and will sell like nuts. Not to mention it's going to be all the rage with trend-wh*re-fashionistas like Rihanna and AD Russo
And whoever had enough guts to say that this was "classy" clearly needs a dictionary. I swear I've seen uptown hookers wearing this stuff.

It's kinda Disel for me.....A higher range of Disel...

HAHAHAHA excellent comparison!!! I couldn't have said it better myself!!

I am BEYOND disappointed. No dresses? Anyone could have designed this collection, including myself. I'm so  :yuk:

Decarnin is far more talented than that. I feel he wasn't inspired at all. For the brand aesthetics and values, they haven't delivered. What happened? He did sexy 70s bohemian so swell, 80s rock chic brilliantly, baroque/Versailles style sublimely, 90s minimalism with a rock twist, gorgeous military gear, and I could go on and on... I expected vibrant, eclectic, sexy, understated provocation and uber glamour. None were there. Ugh.

Well, speaking of that...Pierre Balmain did evening wear, but sure as hell never ever rock chic (hate that term). And Erik Mortensen, you know, who was head designer for Balmain for 10 years (1982-1992), he never did clothing for drug addicts look-a-likes either. He was from my town BTW...

Balmain used to be pretty much about fancy evening wear. And now it looks...well, not very expensive or even glamorous.

I think your analysis is essentially right The Ida. This season, as others have observed, Decarnin has to a large extent taken out the glam. Where were the sequins and the shine. He left us with rock chicks without any glamour.

This season's thread is fairly similar to last season's - some people moan, it's all just the same; others moan it's changed I don't like it. Both positions have an element of correctness. As with any house there's continuity and there's change. Probably those with the sharper, more studied eye will emphasise the changes.

I decided to carry out a potted analysis of what Decarnin's done with the brand since he took over as follows -

Season (Total no. of looks) RedCarpet Cocktail SmartGlam SmartGlamPunk GlamPunk Punk

SS07 (30) 0 4 12 9 6 0
AW07 (30) 2 10 11 7 0 0
SS08 (34) (6) 2 10 6 8 2
AW08 (39) 4 4 10 8 13 1
SS09 (38) 6 5 3 18 5 1
AW09 (45) 4 0 15 15 11 0
SS10 (38) 0 0 4 4 24 5
AW10 (36) 3 0 (smart1) 18 9 5 0
SS11 (32) 0 0 0 4 9 19

So you can see he's gradually eroded away the eveningwear (lost the 'lady', lost The Ida).

The last 4 or 5 seasons he's lost the smart, less neat tailoring, in springsummer collections, returning to a smarter aesthetic for autumnwinter.

He's got increasingly punky and if you look at the weighty numbers over on the right hand side you see that in SS10 they lost the smart and now in SS11they lost the glam. 'My Way' Decarnin says. Yes, this season, the Balmain girl is in the image Decarnin himself presents more than ever before. A gradual process but now, as The Ida says, it's all Decarnin and no Balmain history.

But whilst you might bemoan that process, The Ida, it's perhaps a little empty to do so. Historic Balmain was a dead brand. Now it's a cash cow.

That I've reduced Balmain to a set of numbers is on point. In discussing Balmain we can shed the language of fashion design in favour of the language of business.

The trajectory of the brand is no accident. They sell a lot so they know what sells. Although it would be interesting to see the figures for AW10/11. For me SS10 is the quintessential Balmain. Aesthetically I found AW10/11 awful. It had lost it's punky edge and in many places felt too costumey like a bad rendition of 80's fancy dress someplace between a late Adam Ant and Prince.
Did AW10/11 sell less well. I don't know.

And one just wonders if success has gone to Christophe's head. It's easily done. He thinks he can do what he wants now. Sometimes that's the tipping point between Cash Cow and Dog.

And I think of what Jack and Lazarus said this season. How a skinny jean and ripped t-shirt look is so tired, so done now that it's just not edgy any more. In fashion nothing lasts for ever.

It seems to me the core of the New Balmain's success has been that easy combination of the high gloss sequin and shine sexy glamour with the rocky edge. And sometime back to sometimes throw in a tailored jacket on top.

Yes, the combination, the fusion. To leave essentially only the punked up rock chick loses something because it goes one dimensional and as so many have said you can do this look yourself, authentically, for a price with 1 '0' on the end not 3. So now we might just snigger to ourselves if we see someone sporting SS11 Balmain - stupid label wh*re.

And back to business. I don't know if Balmain is a private company, I think it is, but were it possible to trade the shares I'd have been a seller last season and a seller this.

It seems evident that for AW11/12 they'll go back smarter again in some guise or other. SS12 will be the interesting one. Do they put the shine back in as per SS10 or keep it low rent rock chick as SS11. I think it could turn out to be a battle between the bean counters and Decarnin's ego.

High point over. Cash cow to Dog. Sell, sell, sell.
