btw slaves were white in Russia actually. Even if Sergeenko is white and acting like a blue blooded tsarina doesn't mean she has no slave blood in her, she has it 100%

Naomi Campbell slams Russian designer over her 'n****s in Paris' note - as the fashion insider who shared a snap of the racist card is DROPPED by the brand she co-founded

- Ulyana Sergeenko wrote a note saying 'n****s in Paris' and sent it to Miroslava Duma,

- Miroslava shared a picture of the note on Instagram,

- both women had to issue a public apology,

- Miroslava has been removed from the board of brand The Tot (which she co-founded),

- Naomi re-posted the photo on her Instagram and wrote "This better not be real",

- Ulyana admitted it was a reference to a song by Kanye West and Jay-Z and she and her friends call themselves n****s because they want to look cool.

Thoughts?

I'm more concerned about Miroslava's rant to be honest. Wow.

this. WAY worse for me. forget about whoever in Paris, this is much more troublesome and telling.
(she'll probably be fine in Russia though...)

Miroslava's thing is really wow! I mean, she is such an hypocrite. I know this is the fashion industry but she is beyond.
I kinda wish that one of those woman asked her about gay men. I mean, now we know she is transphobic and doesn't like men in womenswear (it's not like Bryan boy is wearing skirts or dresses) or i would say flamboyant guys.

I mean she used the words weird and pure. This is not a good look and i hope that she will be persona non-grata next Paris Fashion Week.

The bad thing is that she is russian, she probably doesn't care about it. It may hurt her international cachet but she will remain popular in her country. The same for her "N" friend the designer!

WTF?

There are people especially those who are not verse in American history and culture... who just think its a cool slang rappers use. Unfortunately as African-Americans try to destigmatize the term... they fail to educate their global audience about its meaning and why it is so necessary for them to do so...

First, as I've said it already here on TFS, it is true that many people in Europe, particularly people with little to no access to the internet, have no idea that the N word is racist. I only learned the true meaning 6 years ago, until then I thought it was a way of black people calling each other "bro". You hear it all the time on the radio.

That said, as soon as I was told the history of the word, I stopped using it. I agree, the word should be completely eliminated. Appropriation won't help in this particular case.

That said, I do believe she knew exactly what it meant. They are Russian and most Russians live in the 40s. Feminism, racism and homophobia/transphobia are non-issues for them, something created by the west. Most of the Russians I know are dangerously racist and transphobic. Even people from the fashion business. Which is so sad considering that I also know absolutely amazing Russian individuals that are kind, respectful, loving and against prejudice.

I guess it's up to us to get our blackboards and chalk out to give a 101 course to everybody. Isn't this the same woman who published the picture of Dasha Zhukova sitting on a black woman folded into a chair. You cannot tell me she didn't know this was okay.

They don't care... until someone makes them "care". Until they've got something to lose.

Azealia has said some very, VERY nasty things about Zayn Malik before, as well as Skai Jackson who is younger than 18, I believe. Regardless, I do applaud her for speaking out about the horrible normalization of racism/sexism/transphobia/etc.

Azealia Banks on Instagram today about the recent events. I thought worthy to post here (the content is kinda explicit)

Agree. The excuse that Europeans or anybody elsewhere in the world outside of America aren't aware of that word's meaning or its cultural ambiguity (why blacks can say it, but others can't) is no longer valid. The internet connects us all and I find it hard to believe they're that naive or ignorant of the use of that word.

No, you absolutely can not say that! This is my problem with black America, the notion that world is supposed to know absolutely everything that's culturally wrong here.

Let me clarify. I am black and I live in New York, but I have traveled to enough parts of the world and experienced enough cultures to know that what you're saying is absolutely 100% not the case. Some cultures aren't aware of the meaning of the word and to them it's a term of endearment like "bro" or whatever you want to use when communicating with a friend. They don't learn American history in school and they use the word because they enjoy pop culture or rap music and it's used there.

Now, do I believe Sergeenko didn't know the meaning of the word? Absolutely not, she just used it anyway and thought it ok and could get away with it. This is a wealthy woman who spends enough time in the western world to know the difference. The real as*hat though is Duma, not only for posting, but also for what she said about Bryanboy and Andrej Pejic.

That N word is absolutely disgusting and shouldn't be used. However, we need to start holding these rappers accountable as well. You cannot throw that term around if you're an internationally known person, who also expect people to buy your music, but not use the word. It's like buying a gadget but only allowed to use some of the features. No one should use it. Period! This is exhausting.

Wow, if Ulyana seems simply ignorant and stupid, then Duma is just plain hateful. The question is - did she really change her views in the six years that passed, like she said in her apology?

I think there is no excuse for these two, there is clearly a worrying pattern that cannot be put down to ignorance.

Said that we have to be realistic, half of white kids nowdays go around pretending to be from some sort of imaginary black ghetto when they would no even dare to cross the council estate down the corner. The language they adopt, the moves, the expressions they use are taken from black culture and music indiscriminately and this popularity has been making a lot of people a ridiculous amount of money. It is deliberately sold to them as something “cool”.
Confusing racism with ignorance and immaturity is not helpful.

Clearly it’s the second time that Kanye song lands people in hot water, Timberland ended their collaboration with APC because Jean Touitou in a moment of genius decided that was the way to describe the collection.
But the fact that Kanye West himself has a long term collaboration with APC, and no one sees any contradiction in there for me it’s the whole problem.

I completely agree. Rappers need to be held accountable too. People like Kanye normalise the word which has such horrific meaning. He's just as guilty for using it. No one should use the N word. Period. Regardless of whether you're black or white, American or European, a rapper or a designer. It's a horrific word that can only be used with malice. I'm surprised he was even allowed to sing that at VSFS 2011. It should be treated like the K word in South Africa.

While in no way I excuse her for using the term( I'm sure she pondered whether to write it or not) the bigger problem is that there is a MASSIVE gap between US culture and the rest of the world when it comes to racist slang like this. Hence why NO ONE should use the N word, whether it be slang for bro or used in a rap song. That's the only way to settle the problem.

When it comes to the Bryanboy video...well...I'm not surprised. Unfortunately a large majority of Russians (and anyone of that former USSR area) have incredibly conservative and backwards views on things like gender and sexuality. Just look at the Russian anti-gay propaganda laws.

Considering she works in fashion and goes to shows where she is surrounded by eccentric fashionistas who push the boundaries of gender-based dressing and is buddies with gay designers I'm surprised she held these views in the first place. If she held these views in 2012 yet had worked in the fashion industry for that long beforehand then I very much DOUBT she has all of a sudden become progressive.

Until Mira can PROVE that her opinions and views have changed then I'll continue believing that a leopard can't change its spots.

I'm sorry. But she has done it before and I guess she never learned.

Just read Miroslava's whole apology and it's one of the best one's I've read (I guess I've read too many Lena Dunham one's lmao), but makes me wonder if she's been honest in this last lines

"I do not expect instant forgiveness, nor forgiveness at all, for those I’ve offended. I know that my actions must speak louder than my words or gestures on social media — and I pledge to do the necessary work to gain back people's trust and respect.”

I hope so because it would mean there's one less bigot in the world, but it seems like she's more concerned about how it will affect her businesses than anything else, just like Ulyana.
