Designer & Fashion Insiders Behavior (PLEASE READ POST #1 BEFORE POSTING)

Luella and David Sim's son has passed away at 18 supposedly of cancer. No wonder we haven't seen as much of David's work lately.

Could be reading more into this than I should, but what do you mean by "supposedly"? Kip did have cancer, fought it for 3 years, and passed away in August.

That's so sad, my goodness. RIP
David posted a tribute to him on IG the other day, but I thought it was just a birthday post or something. My thoughts are with them.

I feel like we all have an idea of the losses we'll eventually endure (parents, friends, lovers) but losing a child must be truly unfathomable, it doesn't seem natural... so sorry for them and for the younger siblings. I still remember when she was expecting him (she was doing some exciting work at Luella then), it's sad his time here was so brief.

The comment is in Portuguese. Here's the translation: “The current Vogue Italia management is destroying the magazine, Franca is turning over in the grave, come back Giovanni.”

God, what a horrifying freak accident. New fear unlocked: exploding fireplaces! Thankfully he has healed now, but it sounds like a traumatic, awful, painful experience and I do find it admirable that he chose to share that experience and his vulnerability about how he looks and his reflection/growth as a result.

The lips were the only thing I noticed.
do we have a before and after? are we sure these are not his lips? I feel bad for criticizing if they are indeed his natural lips.. but hm.. whoa lol.

How did the fireplace explode? I have questions , and now that he went through the trouble of sharing what seemed like an okay thing to deal with privately, please let us know what not to do.. I mean, I just add a firelog and call it a day..?

*eta just looked this up.. apparently it happens with gas fireplaces, something I’m not interested in ever having cause, what’s the point, mood-wise..

I really wish he didn't share this on Instagram of all platforms, especially tucked between his 'livin it up for the gram' shots. How do you start a conversation about being less perfect when everything on your page up to the 2nd recent pic is about setting perfect ideals? This could've turned out quite tragic, as in, he could have died. But I'm still getting influencer vibes from him sharing this pic because other than a bunch of news outlets writing about this now (tick), garnering public sympathy & people calling him 'brave' (tick), what else is the takeaway? In a profound sense?

This post will be like those celebs who posted makeup-free selfies at some stage. A blip on the radar. Everyone will clap in support, but it won't change that influencer-infested app at all. I was truly shocked when Instagram acted all surprised at young girls having body image issues due to content on the app.

Isn't that part of what he was saying tho, that Instagram really is a reality of your own making? And how he hid everything and made it look like everything was fine, even tho it wasn't.

Sure, for most people's "brands" posting the mundane and real sh*t they are going through isn't nearly as sexy and cool as a perfect selfie on a yacht or a hanging with celebs, but how many people (celebs and non celebs alike) are posting their "real" lives online?

Right, but when you say 'let's show more imperfections/show the real you', you have to actually be or live that change.
As recently as 6 days ago, he still posted about Porsche while looking like your average influencer. It's not even that he's not posting pics of his imperfections etc, it's that whatever he's posting grossly contributes to the toxic aspirational body/image/lifestyle issues that most people on that app are struggling with. Flaunting a lifestyle that most of his 7.1 million followers can only dream of. How would that encourage others to post their less than chic daily lives?
I'm assuming this 'Road to Damascus' moment of his happened way before the recent posts, so can we really say that he learned anything new and will probably be more mindful of the image he sends out?

Notice how nobody who commented in this thread so far has been checking for him, but since he chose to post it for the world to see that actually entitles everyone to an opinion, to scrutinise his messaging/images. Whether it's agreeable with his grandstanding, or not.

One of the worse things that social media, especially Instagram, coopted from fashion is this idea to create an alternate, glossy reality of your life. Which is not only disgustingly narcissistic, but it fuels irresponsible spending and as I've mentioned before, is actually bad for most people's mental health.

This situation is like the negative potential of social media in a nutshell. He spent a YEAR dealing with what seems to be pretty extensive burns, and the whole time was promoting a fantasy version of his life online without anyone knowing the difference? That's f*cked up.

True! And it shows how multi-layered the issues are and how everyone, regardless of socio-economic status or looks can fall prey to it. 'I'm not cute enough, thin/slim-thick/buff enough, stylish enough, rich enough.' And even if I'm happy and confident with the way I am, I will still be bombarded with x2/3 better versions of myself on the timeline.

We've basically messed up an entire generation.
