Do you walk / run for exercise?

I personally don't run...i'm allergic to running :innocent:
But my b/f mom runs EVERY single day...she's 50 and she's in way better shape than moi

I just started running this week. I used to spend a lot of time on the elliptical, but I was getting afraid of it using only certain leg muscles so I decided that running is probably the most natural form of exercise (along with walking and swimming). Also I used to be a competitive runner in high school and I miss how fit I was back then.

So I started with one mile on Monday. And yesterday I jogged 1.5 miles and for anther 0.5 miles I alternated between walking and sprinting. I loved the way I felt afterwards. But these stories of shin splints are scaring me. I don't know what I'd do if I wasn't able to exercise for weeks at a time.

The only complaint I have a stitch in my side that started AFTER I ran yesterday and I still feel it! It is sooo annoying. Any ideas on what to do about it? :flower:

All these tips are great! I desperately need to get into shape and get fitter - I've been lacking recently

in my opinion- running is the only way to loose weight- esp for a beg...
I personally run about 6 miles 3 times per week...
It is hard at first... but always strive to run more than the previous 2 weeks- you will see that it is a stress reliever like no other.

And another piece of advice for all those interested- get good shoes, do not skimp on shoes... your knees will thank you for it.

model_mom, you made me laugh with your first post (i just discovered this thread). Even though I'm super active in the summer and have started training again, I think funny things when I see people running outside. I think to myself: "Man, those people ARE active. Woah." ...and forget that I played 4 games that week and had two big practices with my team. Hmm...maybe it's a respect thing...that these people got their bums off the couch and PUT ON those running shoes. heh heh.

ps I love running. It's a calming thing for me. But, I have to admit, had I not found out that I had a month to go before tryouts, I couldn't for the life of me get motivated to start running again. It's strange...I can exercise for others (i.e. for my team's benefit, to get other people going), but it's hard to do it purely on my own account. I think that I'd love running a whole lot more if I had an mp3 player though...I'm still playing the retro card with my WALKMAN and discman. I borrowed my roomates' ipod and creative mp3 player and LOVED it. I almost got scammed by a buy'nsell guy the other day though...so I suppose I should be happy that I don't own one right now.

sheesh!! i sure write a lot. maybe it's because I'm a good procrastinator. BACK TO THE REPORT!@!!!!!!

that's awesome UngaroKitty! now that it's warmer i've started running in the mornings as opposed to after school and i've seen major differences...my only complaints are a very stubborn stress fracture and a shin splint (yep, just one)...and yes my stress levels have gone down a considerable amount. what do you play, fashionbebe? my iPod is a great motivator when it comes to exercise, i would definitely recommend one.

I believe you! I definitely worked up quite a sweat the last time I played it, and that was just for fun! As for the iPod, it was a combined bday/xmas present B) Does anyone know any good calf slimming exercises? I run regularly and mine are still too bulky

Running

 Any runners out there?

I want to start running on a regular basis to get in shape and clear my mind. Not too sure how to start out.. How long should I go for.. Is there a such thing as too much?

^ yes, you should be careful of how much your body can handle. I started out jogging 1 mile every other day. Once I got used to the distance, I increased the length by 1/2 mile...

well...you should start from little to more...thats what the teacher who's kinda obsessed with her diet told us. for example you can run 10 minutes starting week one. then week two you add 5 more extra minutes. then you just keep on adding...or so i'm told...:P

but it depends on the time you have and so on...

I walk for daily basis 3 km per day ( how much is this in miles?)

And hiking..oh how I love hiking..

6 days a week I will either run high intensity interval sprints (aka "HIIT") on the treadmill (i.e. 1 minute walk 3.0mph, 1 min run 10.0 mph, repeat for 20 minutes) or run 5 miles. The HIIT training will make you lose fat like CrAzY!!!! it spikes your metabolism all day and makes your body push out of it's comfort zone.

^^ wow i've never heard of that, thanks for the info! i work out every day, at least an hour of cardio and today i discovered i can run! quite comfortably! about 30 minutes! wow i am very proud of myself!

i should go and try that...

I walk about 1 hour a week.. that's only from the train station home though

I've read about HIIT, I wanted to try it but I HATE RUNNING. I always make myself believe I'll love the wind going through my hair and the whole show. But I HATE IT. Recently I started walking half an hour each day, and I hope to build up to jogging and later running pace. I insist giving it a try for the 6th time :ninja:

From my understanding, HIIT is not only applicable to running, it can be used on any of the gym machines.

I don't know if it will get enough responses to start a thread on HIIT, so I'll ask here. I've just merely RE-STARTED my exercise regime about 2 months ago. Been doing interval training of some sorts, like working my heart rate between 150 to 170 for a couple of minutes at each range.

Is it ok for me to start HIIT now?
