Do you walk / run for exercise?

I do a hell of a lot more walking these days i find its easier for my body to handle...

Since this topic is about running...I have a question. I'm on the tennis team and before we practice, we go on the track and run/jog a mile (4 laps). My problem is that when i start jogging, after maybe 2 laps or less, my legs are already cramping and my calves really start to burn...not in a normal way either..it feels like my calve muscles are pulling and tightening and like my legs are going to burn off. So I was wondering why and how this happens, and how I could become a better runner and prevent it.

are you stretching before you run? even though a mile doesn't seem like it's far, you should still stretch out your legs before running. i've been running since i was 10 (for lacrosse at first, then on the track/x-c teams, now to keep in shape) and i spend a good half hour stretching.

You should stretch after about 5 minutes of walking, that way your muscles are warmed up and ready to be stretched/worked.

I either walk for an hour, or run for half an hour (every day when I can) on my treadmill. I'll be walking along the coast in Spring/Summer though, as it's only a 5 minute drive down to an accessable track..

If you're starting out I would say try half an hour a day, and work up to an hour when you feel comfortable. It's easy to push yourself too far in the start and lose interest. Try listening to music if you can't find the motivation, I find that encourages me to keep going and push harder.

^ yes, music helps alot. i run about an hour and walk an hour. but it really depends on how lazy i am.

I usually take a day off during the week, it's something to look forward to. But if I go for too long without doing anything I start to feel lazy/guilty and start up again. I'm going through the stage of doing nothing at the moment, but I do walk through the city to work every day, that is about 15 minutes both way, so it adds up.

you might need magnesium.. i dont know much about it but a doctor was saying that if your legs cramp like that u need to have more magnesium - i have no idea how you take it but look into it more

I used to run every now and then, but then I got tendonitis and ended up having to go to an orthopedist. He informed me that my KNEES weren't meant for running and that I had to lose more weight to be able to run again and not mess up my knees and feet. I am not overweight, so I found that all bizarre, but at risk of messing up a tendon for good, I decided to lose more weight and then try running again. Also, he informed me that depending on the shape of your foot and sole, some shoes may not be adequate. I used to use Nike and Adidas, which he informed me that for my feet, they are TERRIBLE. Go figure. I have spent over 10 years of my life using Nike and NOW is when I find out that the shoes I have been wearing are no good for me. In the meantime I am back to my daily spinning and I also walk...

For those seeking motivation, I find that the iPod works wonders! Sometimes I just get so lazy and it is a mission just to get my foot out the door, but once I'm out, I try to walk and just enjoy the music and scenery. Try telling yourself that even if you only walk/run for 10 minutes, it's better than nothing. You'll find yourself doing more than 10 minutes and feeling better about yourself!

i'm trying to work myself up to 30 min. straight... i feel i have the stamina its just that my legs are so sore (from running the day before!) I think this is a good thing, because my legs are sore in places they've never been sore before, i like it!

I run 2 miles every night (i made the school athletics team, have to keep up  ) . but i like being out around 10pm when it's not too late but still there's not many people out there and it's dark and i'll bring my iPod and listen to some quiet music and i always feel great afterwards. i think i need some alone space every day and it's a good way to get it.

Right now I walk and run/jog at the track. I get there at 5:45 am and stretch etc.. And walk a lap to warm up. Then I run a mile and then walk and jog after that. All together around 3.4 miles. I'm trying to do more stretches and everything which helps. And my breathing is becoming more even when I'm running :D

I've been running like a beast this summer.. it has paid off... I run about 50 miles a week :ninja: Yay running sports!

1 hour walk every day and a 20 minute run. I walk everywhere, I almost never get driven anywhere around town or use public transport (it's not the transport I object to, it's the public). In a machine-age it's quite liberating to do something for yourself.

That's what I do as well. I walk almost everywhere... to the mall... to cafes... bookstores... school (well used to walk to school, I won't be anymore because I'll be starting university- but I'll still be doing walking around there too of course) and I try to run for about half an hour 5x a week.

Wow that isawesome! :woot: :flower:

I've always just done brisk walking for cardio. For a plethora of reasons, running is not for me.

I love to walk, it's a good time to take in the sights, quiet my thoughts or clear my mind. Most of the time I will walk with my boyfriend, and we'll go over the events of the day while walking - much healthier than chatting over a cuppa of java in this instance.

I admit, I'm lazy, so I'll probably run around 6 miles a week, on the threadmill :ninja:

Walking is easier on my body and makes me leaner than running. I average about 5 miles a day walking around the city...I hate running or walking on treadmilles, let alone being stuck inside staring at an unchanging scenery . I admire those of you who has the discipline to do what I can not!

The only thing I'm really really scared of is that running/brisk walking will make my legs look chunky...
