Early Oscar Buzz/Nominations '06-'07

wow you really thought this through!! i agree, cate blanchett will no doubt get nominated for something. now there are so many movies i want to see!

I think Streep and Forrest Whitaker will be nominated. I'm not sure who else.

I doubt Cate Blanchett will get a nom for Babel or The Good German (or is it Shepard), but then she's got three other movies. Though the buzz for Babel is good, I think only a director nomination is a lock. There's still a lot of time people: February.

Fur, unlike pre-viewing buzz predicted, is going nowhere. After watching the trailer, the movie is just plain weird. Shame because I heard some really good buzz. I was hoping for some kind of big comeback for Kidman, not that she needs one....

I don't understand why so many studios are kicking off Oscar campaigns so early. Crash was just one time. No movie yet has brought in enough money at the box office to grab real attention, besides the reviews. Studios really have to believe their film is good to think that they'll survive the coming months. Hollywoodland, Little Children, Flags of Our Father, Fur, Babel, etc. are opening this weekend or have already opened. Annette Benning had great, strong buzz... that died off quick. There's a lot of time for someone to grab the spotlight.

Surprises? Will Smith for The Pursuit of Happyness (I spelled it right). I forgot after Hitch and Bad Boys too that Will Smith has done serious roles, and it's a strong role for him- single father trying to make it work.

My opinions...
Movies/Actors I'm rooting for -
Kate Winslet - lead actress - Little Children and Helen Mirren - lead actress - The Queen - If it's anybody that's going head to head, I think it's these two. It's going to be a great year for both of them, why not top it off with an Oscar?
Penelope Cruz - lead actress - Volver -
Steve Carell - Supporting Actor - Little Miss Sunshine - there's a lot of love for him and this movie
Matt Damon and Leonardo Dicaprio - they're gonna get nominated for something, plus I've heard Leonardo Dicaprio as this generation's Robert Dinero or was it Jack Nicolson? And I agree...
Will Smith - Lead actor - Pursuit of Happynes - read above

For goodness sakes no -
Bobby - I feel bad for the Weinsteins
Dreamgirls - there's a lot of love/buzz for this movie, but no one's seen it...
Flag of Our Fathers - I don't see this one going anywhere...

the trailer for the last king of scotland is amazing! Then again, I said trailer.

My money is on Kate Winslet.

When will the nomations be announced?
Tuesday, January 23, 2007: Nominations announced 5:30 a.m. PST, Samuel Goldwyn Theater - from oscar.com

There is a lot of oscar posturing going on now because the oscar noms and ceremony have been moved up. I know last yr some studios felt that they started campaigning too late so I guess everyone is going early this yr.

I saw quite a few movies and actors that will probably get nominated at the filmfest.

For best actress I think Helen Mirren is a lock. I'd love to see Kate Winslet for Little Children as she was great in the movie but the studio are pretty much letting the movie die at the b.o and haven't released it in more than 30 theatres. Penelope Cruz is a possibility. For whomever said she wouldn't get nominated/win because it's a foreign movie, Roberto Begnini famously won best actor for Life is Beautiful - that was a foreign movie. Would love to see Naomi get nominated. Or Cate B for Notes on scandal, I think that's lead material.

I'd say Meryl Streep is more of a best supporting actress candidate. I think Cate Blanchett could get in here for one of her many movies. Possibly Judi Dench for Notes on a Scandal.

Having seen Fiction, no one from the movie is really nom worthy. Possibly a comedy golden globe nom but not an oscar nom. I enjoyed The Fountain but not acting noms either there IMO, definitely for score, set and cinematography though. Breaking and Entering was better than I thought it would be but I didn't think any of the performances were award worthy, execept maybe Vera Farmiga (also in the Departed) in a small role as a prostitute.

I just don't want Sienna (for Factory Girl) or Beyonce (for Dreamgirls) to get nominated just because both studios are going to throw a ton of money around in the hopes of getting as many noms as possible. Both of those women would be insufferable if they got an oscar nom.

I could see Forrest gettting nominated for LKS although he seems more supporting in the movie and James Macavoy isn't good enough for a nom although he's fine in the movie. Hugh is good in The Fountain but not good enough for a nom, same for Patrick Wilson. I think the actor who plays the child molestor in Little Children is nom worthy.

I thought Matt and Leo were great in The Departed. I'm curious to see how Leo does in The Blood Diamond.

Movies like All the King's Men, Fur, Flags of Our Fathers & Running with Scissors have really been ripped to shred by the critics so I think their chances of oscar glory are nil.

I'd say Marty has a good shot as best director this yr.

helen is sure to win best actress. actresses who have been in the business longer usually win, don't they?

No, far from it... Just look at the winners for the past years. That's one of the major accusations critics make of the Oscars. There's a lot of people with resentment over Julia Roberts win over Ellen Burstyn. America's Sweetheart over an established, older actress... Hilary Swank vs. Annette Benning... Meryl Streep nominations vs. wins.... Judi Dench getting Oscars for supporting actress...

2000 Julia Roberts - Erin Brockovich as "Erin Brockovich"
Joan Allen - The Contender
Juliette Binoche - Chocolat
Ellen Burstyn - Requiem for a Dream
Laura Linney - You Can Count on Me

2001 Halle Berry - Monster's Ball as "Leticia Musgrove"
Judi Dench - Iris
Nicole Kidman - Moulin Rouge!
Sissy Spacek - In the Bedroom
Renée Zellweger - Bridget Jones's Diary

2002 Nicole Kidman - The Hours as "Virginia Woolf"
Salma Hayek - Frida
Diane Lane - Unfaithful
Julianne Moore - Far From Heaven
Renée Zellweger - Chicago

2003 Charlize Theron - Monster as "Aileen Wuornos"
Keisha Castle-Hughes - Whale Rider
Diane Keaton - Something's Gotta Give
Samantha Morton - In America
Naomi Watts - 21 Grams

2004 Hilary Swank - Million Dollar Baby as "Maggie Fitzgerald"
Annette Bening - Being Julia
Catalina Sandino Moreno - Maria Full of Grace
Imelda Staunton - Vera Drake
Kate Winslet - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

2005 Reese Witherspoon - Walk the Line as "June Carter"
Judi Dench - Mrs. Henderson Presents
Felicity Huffman - Transamerica
Charlize Theron - North Country
Keira Knightley - Pride and Prejudice
(info from wiki)

Helen's also got the whole foreign thing going against her. More british people need lead wins not just supporting actor wins. Yeah... I know, the Academy's really bias.

Yeah, I think they are going to give him a pity award, a shame he lost in 1990 to Kevin Costner??!!

^oh yeah you're right! i don't know why i thought that. maybe because the only time i could remember a best actress winning was judi dench. and that was a while back!

^^ Judi won for best supporting actress, they tend to be a little more out there in the picks for that category. Marisa Tomei anyone???

Lead actress does tend to skew younger. It burns me that Julia "a low vera" Roberts and Gywneth "smug as hell" paltrow have oscars and the likes of Kate Winslet doesn't. I do think there is the tendency to annoint the hollywood supertstar with an oscar and get blinded by the "name" rather than the peformance.

I can see Cate, Kate, Helen, Judi, Penelope and Naomi all as legit possibles. I haven't really heard of any legit american contenders for best actress this yr so perhaps it'll go to a "foreigner" for a change.

I'm not saying they would give Marty the Best Director out of pity necessarily, the critics and the public seem to have loved The Departed. More so than The Aviator and Gangs of NY. Clint's movie was thought to be a contender but it has gone down in flames so I think Marty has a legit shot at winning this yr.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
This category has rarely been as competitive because so many actors from the same movie are being pushed as nominees. The studio behind "The Departed" decided to enter all its big names, although DiCaprio and Damon clearly have the dominant roles.

In the running: Alec Baldwin for "The Departed"; Jack Nicholson for "The Departed"; Paul Dano for "Little Miss Sunshine"; Shia LaBeouf for "Bobby"; Clive Owen for "Inside Man."

I  Shia LaBeouf! but I doubt he wins...

wow paul dano and shia labeouf? those are just those people's guesses right?

more than likely. It would still be pretty sweet though. I may actually watch the Oscars in its entirety this year...:innocent:

This is a link to oscarwatch.com. They have a listing on the site of the possible/likely picks for all the categories.

I think that there will be a few celebs this yr (cate blanchett, matt damon, leo dicaprio) who will have 2 great performances so that may work against them.

I think at this point in time a lot of races are still wide open. I think once the critics boards and some of the other award ceremonies ie SAG, BAFTA, GG start making their pics we should have a better idea about possible nominees.
