Early Oscar Buzz/Nominations '06-'07

2000 Julia Roberts - Erin Brockovich as "Erin Brockovich"
Joan Allen - The Contender
Juliette Binoche - Chocolat
Ellen Burstyn - Requiem for a Dream
Laura Linney - You Can Count on Me
.

Don't remind me of this. When that was announced i think my head span around like that girl from the Exorcist. It makes me so mad that Julia could win over far more superior actresses, and that Gwyneth beat Cate, and that Kevin Costner beat Martin Scorcese for Best Director......I could go on and on.
That's why I'm not getting my hopes up for Helen Mirren. She deserves it, but I'm betting their is due to be a tidal wave of publicity for more magazine friendly stars: i.e. Reese, Angelina, Kidman and Sienna.

"Reese, Angelina, Kidman and Sienna."

Reese doesn't have anything does she? Fur bombed at the B.O and that is Nic's only dramatic role this yr. Not sure if Angie will get a nom for The Good Shepherd but if she does it is more than likely to be in supporting. I hope that Sienna doesn't get a nom, unless her role in FG is absolutely stellar (which I have a hard time believing) I can't see there being a lot of support for her a nom.

I still say some combo of Helen Mirren, Cate Blanchett, Naomi Watts, Kate Winslet, Judi Dench.

I heard that the director of the Good sheperd said, that Jolie will get a nom. as bsupporting actress. I have only seen some pictures from the set. but I have no doubt that she is wonderful (like in Girl Interrupted). She can play dramatic roles perfectly.

little miss sunshine needs to win!!!
forget borat, this is the funniest movie i've seen in my life.

all the king's men was a snore. jackass 2 would have a better chance at getting an oscar than that
flags of our fathers... i love clint, but i can't see ryan philipe in a "tough" role. i saw crash last year, and although i give him points for trying, his cop role made me want to laugh. it's not really his acting, it's more of him. he's too cute, and not just lookwise. his voice, his angry look, none of it works.

kate blanchett:heart:  ... not sure about babel though... i'd say her movie with george clooney:heart: the good german? should get her the nomination
angelina jolie for a good shepard... no
dreamgirls... no
meryl streep was brilliant in devil, but her role wasn't that big
i really want to see fur, although i doubt nicole can pull off an hours like performance for that role

Article on BIFA winners

Shane Meadows’ “This Is England” won out over its higher-profile com-petish at the British Independent Film Awards.

The British Independent Film Awards lived up to its name Wednesday with a defiantly independent-minded selection of winners led by "This Is England," which took the film prize.
Director Shane Meadows' semiautobiographical tale about a young skinhead growing up in the strife-torn 1980s beat several higher-profile contenders, including "The Queen" and "The Last King of Scotland."

Pic's teenage star, Thomas Turgoose, drew the nod for newcomer onscreen.

Kevin Macdonald took director for "Last King of Scotland," whose cinematographer, Anthony Dod Mantle, picked up the prize for technical achievement.

In a double surprise, the actor and actress kudos went to Tony Curran and Kate Dickie for their perfs in Andrea Arnold's gritty Glaswegian drama "Red Road."

Curran beat Oscar front-runners Forest Whitaker and Peter O'Toole, while Dickie outpaced Oscar favorite Helen Mirren. Surprisingly, Arnold herself lost the new director nod to Menhaj Huda for "Kidulthood."

Leslie Phillips ("Venus") drew supporting actor or actress honors.

"The Queen" picked up one laurel, for Peter Morgan's screenplay, although Mirren was also presented with Variety's U.K. Film Achievement Award.

Michael Haneke's "Hidden" took foreign film; Michael Winterbottom's "Road to Guantanamo" triumphed in the documentary section.

Paul Andrew Williams' "London to Brighton" was honored for achievement in production. "The Ballad of A.J. Weberman" won the Raindance Award for the best movie screened at the Raindance Film Festival.

Ken Loach, whose Cannes winner "The Wind That Shakes the Barley" was nominated in several categories but failed to win in any, received the consolation of the special jury prize.

Jim Broadbent was presented with the Richard Harris award for contribution to British film by an actor.

Ceremony took place at the Hammersmith Palais in west London.
