wahooo!!! yesterday my copie of edie: american girl came in the post so ive started reading it.
the only thing is, for all this time ive been thinking u pronounced her name EDDIE, but i only just realised that it mite be pronounced EEDIE (i have a feeling it is).

anyone care to help me out??

yup...eedie. and i just finished that book a couple of days ago. it's great. enjoy the read

For real. And wasn't she on drugs all the time? If you've ever seen Jennifer, you'd know she really is light and full of life.

she's also supposed to be a b*tch and a cheater, but i digress...back to edie's style, not this foolish movie business

before edie got on drugs- hardcore drugs anyway- she was described as absolutely magnetic. she just lit up a room and dazzled any and all who met her. it was after the drugs reduced her to a pathetic imitation of her former self that she left the warhol crew and quickly spiraled downhill.

Jane Holzer on Edie

Hey,

I found this in an article in THE DALLAS MORNING NEWS, Published AUGUST 11, 1991:

On Edie Sedgwick: "She was so beautiful and so destructive," recalls Ms. Holzer. "Self-destructive. It was horrible. (On Ciao! Manhattan) she would be very late, and we'd all be waiting. I would make myself up 20 times, and then she'd come in looking breathtaking. Whatever cocktail she had taken had got her into the right place -- loose, but we were all tense because we were straight." Ms. Sedgwick, of course, was one of the many drug casualties of the '60s. "They didn't know," Ms. Holzer says of this group. "They'd seen their parents, who were alcoholics, so they figured they could mess with stronger substances, not knowing how strong they were and how addictive they were and that they could die."

This isn't a contest between the two. They are both two VERY different people.

Back to Edie - I've read every book on her and I have "Ciao Manhattan." Poor Edie never really stood a chance - the Sedgwick family was so abnormal.
Edie's style was so magnificent and original...only she could pull that look off.

There's no way you could possibly even KNOW that.

Pardon? It's my opinion - what do you mean *know*? A statement like that would always be subjective - so it wouldn't be a question of knowing anything. Even if I was comparing two friends of mine my judgement that one of them was more lively than the other would just be a *subjective* judgement.

I have seen movies with Edie and I've seen movies with Jennifer. Based on that I'm making a judgment about their appeal. I THINK I'm entiteled to my opinion, thank you very much....

To me they are very physically similar - but whereas Edie is like quicksilver, Jennifer is rather stiff, not to say wooden.

Being on drugs is not necessarily bad for your appearance. I've only seen Jennifer in movies and interviews, even if I've been trying to avoid her, so I wouldn't know what she's like when you know her. I find her presence in movies, interviews and stills more tranquilizing than barbiturates. But clearly you guys don't - which is great for you because you don't have to see her spoil movie after movie and cover after cover.

I have a friend who looks EXACTLY like Edie! It's amazing! They both have big perfectly shaped eyebrows, big brown eyes and the same nose. She doesn't even know who Edie sedgwick is and she cut her hair short like Ediesabout 5 years ago. They even have the same voice except my friends is more raspy. I'll try to find a picture of her and ask her if i can post it.

Doesn't anyone else think Brittany Murphy would have been a good Edie?

You might want to research that (see Anita Pallenberg) before you post a statement like that. I work in the medical field, and believe me, drugs take their toll on a person's looks. However, it can take days, months, years...it depends upon the drug. To be honest, Edie's body looked emaciated and completely unhealthy when she was on speed.

If you don't get it, you don't get it.
Anyone who lives in the moment as much as Edie did is just amazing and inspiring.
Everyone was attracted like a moth to a flame
There are those people rare and few that are the light in the room, and your glad that they enter the room and your sad when they leave, by reading her biography, and reading what her "friends" said about her this defines who she is.

and all that other glamour, makeup, short icey hair, chandelier earrings, pixie, anthracite eyes is just icing on the cake.

Give me a break. She lived "in the moment" because she was incredibly spoiled and never had to worry about anything serious other then where her next fix was coming from. This makes me deeply disturbed and a little sad. Style icon? Sure. The woman always looked amazing. I adore her look. But what an empty person. She seems like nothing more then a Paris Hilton (a spoiled heiress with a lust for fame who was more known for her social status then her accomplishments) with style. Perhaps slightly more self-absorbed and self-indulgent. It seems as though her interests were spending money she didn't earn, partying, doing drugs, and putting on make-up-- how vacuous! People starving on the street and this spoiled child brags about how she spent her inheritance in six months; I think that is disgusting. She had the money and potential to inspire people, help people, do something spectacular (think Audrey Hepburn), and instead indulged herself and lived a wasteful life.

Anyways, I love to channel her look with winged eyelinger, boots and black tunics. I like to make it a little tougher though, with a shark tooth necklace and no earrings, and messier hair. It is amazing what a chameleon quality she has, looking like a different person depending on the photo.

Lunabella, I guess some people find Edie inspiring like you find kate inspiring.

They both live in the moment, very dangerously, like they're about to fall off a cliff at all times, but never do. They are both troubled, but both lead (and led) enviously glamourous existences.

But Edie was stunning, beautiful, the original, and no one can close...her signiature style statements would not look as good on anyone else.

I just ordered my Edie biography and it should be here in the next couple of days...can't wait to read it all in one go...I know it'll be unputdownable. :woot:

Although Kate's style is much less calculated (also she worked to get where she is as opposed to being born with a silver spoon). Edie spent hours applying make-up, etc., where Kate often looks as though she just put on what was on her floor and forgot to comb her hair/put her "face" on. I love the whimsical nature of Kate's style and the glitter-rock, glam, mod nature of Edie's, but they are quite different.

You heard me say "not necessarily", right? I put an element of doubt and caution in there. Long time hard core drug use is not good for your looks - there's no doubt about that. For a while it can look awesome, though, there's no doubt about that either.

If you've read the book about her (Edie: American Girl) you'll know that she had a difficult upbringing with a sociopathic father whose ideals contributed to that she developed bullimia/anorexia by the time she was 13. I wouldn't call her a spoilt brat.

Edie had a gift - she was one of those people with endless amounts of beauty and star quality - but due to her personal problems and excessive drug use her talents were thwarted and she lead a very sad, but sometimes beautiful, life. She was a typical case of burning out rather than fade away.
I think that the tragedy of her life adds to her appeal - a 20th century tragedy that some people can identify with.

I had lots of time to waste yesterday evening, without feeling horribly guilty about it, so... I decided to test-drive a look, that I've always wanted to try- Edie Sedgwick's! Despite the difference in face shapes (le sigh) and my longer red hair, rather than short blond, I'm still pretty proud of this, my first, but definitely not last- attempt. I want to try it again in the near future, and buy myself a dark shade of eyeshadow for that purpose. I also discovered that our household's sad lack of dangly gold jewelry, which I fully intend to correct on my next shopping expedition!

The instructions are at the beginning of the topic, for those interested. :flower:

I've tried to do like you, purple, but me I don't have great brown eyes... grrr. And my blonde hair is not enough fair! Anyway... this is how it looked :p

HOLY FO SHIZZLE! Wow, Satinella, you have a very, very, VERY creepy resemblence to her! Wow. You have such a soft-featured pretty face, you really do. Wow.

I like your striped shirt; where'd you get it? Also, how old are you?

Thanx Jadee!

It's the t-shirt of Jean-Paul Gautier from La Redoute (http://www.laredoute.fr) :flower:
And I'm 18 years old... and a half :p :D
