Edie Sedgwick #1

I've spent the last few days reading this entire thread....so many great pictures and commentary. Although I find Edie very fascinating, I'm really interested in her relationship with Bob Neuwirth and her influence on Bob Dylan.

Someone posted a Dylan quote many many pages back, and it's the only time (that I know of) that he's ever discussed her. Obviously, in typical Dylan fashion, he acts evasive and mysterious, but still....it's interesting:

"I never had that much to do with Edie Sedgwick. I've seen where I have had, and read that I have had, but I don't remember Edie that well. I remember she was around, but I know other people who, as far as I know, might have been involved with Edie. Uh, she was a great girl. An exciting girl, very enthusiastic. She was around the Andy Warhol scene, and I drifted in and out of that scene, but then I moved out of the Chelsea Hotel. We, me and my wife, lived in the Chelsea Hotel on the third floor in 1965 or '66, when our first baby was born. We moved out of that hotel maybe a year before Chelsea Girls, and when Chelsea Girls came out, it was all over for the Chelsea Hotel. You might as well have burned it down. The notoriety it had gotten from that movie pretty much destroyed it. I think Edie was in Chelsea Girls. I had lost total touch with her by that time, anyway. It may just have been a time when there was just a lot of stuff happening. Ondine, Steve Paul's Scene, Cheetah. That's when I would have known Edie if I would have known her, and I did know her, but I don't recall any type of relationship. If I did have one, I think I'd remember." -SPIN Magazine, 1985

Anyway, love Edie and love the thread!

there is so much saturation of edie's brand and image by so many photographers, and artists that I wished her family would take ownership of her name, they would have made a nice chunk of change, but they don't need the money, and it's sore spot to drudge up the past

Hi faintlyamused I like your post, and thanks for that quote!

You would be interested perhaps to read about Edie's brother who is adamant on the fact that Bob Dylan simply denies his relationship with Edie for the sake of his reputation not being ruined because if he admitted it it would sort of turn the blame towards him regarding her death , or downfall rather. He said that Edie had told him she had to abort Bob's baby because of all the drugs she had taken and that destroyed her. This means of course they had a relationship, but everyone knows Edie was unaware Bob was getting married until she saw the headline in the news. Bob denies all of this. It's interesting to read about that so you see the back and forth that occurred over that controversy. If you google it it would turn up in many sources, as it did for me!

It sort of makes me angry how Bob Dylan denies denies denies, every chance he gets. But that's just me..

Edie has admitted to an abortion, but it was NOT Bob Dylan's. She has stated, on record, that she had an abortion after her first time having sex, with a "Harvard type" guy that she met while she was still in a mental hospital when she first came to New York (before she met Dylan or Warhol). Because of that, she was able to get the abortion with no problem, since she had a medical reason. Liberty Bell (Edie's niece) has also confirmed this story.

Edie knew Bob Dylan through her relationship with Bob Neuwirth. They may have had something more than a friendship (It was the 60's) but she has stated that Bob Neuwirth was the love of her life. It was also Bob Neuwirth, (not Dylan) that she made her first movie with after she broke things off with Andy. She is walking her stuffed Rhino (Wallow) down the street on roller skates and a cop gives her a ticket. I would do anything to see that little movie.:D

But I do think Dylan knew Edie and that she influenced some of his songs. He is so vague about everything - we will probably NEVER know the truth.

I know! He is so vague it's maddening. I did know about that abortion, and it has been confirmed. But her brother does say she had Dylan's baby and aborted it. I of course don't know if that's true or not. I heard of it coz there's articles and interviews all over the net about it. Check it out it's pretty controversial!

Ah I would love to see that film as well, classic! ^_^

^^Yeah, her brother Jonathan is the one who said that about Dylan. Maybe she told him that? Who knows. :p

But speaking of her family and the rights to her brand/image (as angel222 mentioned), I think that Michael Post may own some rights and the Warhol organization owns some. Depends on the image, I think.

Firstly, I wouldn't believe what that brother says. Edie's niece who used to post on here a lot said that he was really affected by the sixties. Secondly, Don't you think that if Edie and Dylan were that serious she would have at least mentioned him once? I mean, she talked about Neuwirth a lot. And her brother started saying all of this when Factory Girl came out which makes you wonder. Also, Dylan hasn't denied it that much. He never talks about anything and there's only one quote of him mentioning her. The facts are that Edie had an abortion when she was 19 like KLove said, and she dated Bob Neuwirth. The rest is and most likely always will be hearsay so there's no use speculating.

Sorry for the rant! It just gets frustrating.

Edie´s wasn´t even in NY when she was 19?
I don´t really know, haven´t read the book in a while...
but if she was 28 when she died, 1971.. she was 22 when she hung out with Warhol and friends.
she moved to NY in -64 when she was 21.

Oh really Edie's niece used to post here? What was her username?

You're probably right. But I remember Bob Dylan did make a lot of fuss to try to get the script before the movie was released or something like that, he was quite worried about it. I would hope it isn't true, I mean she really didn't need extra heartbreak like that after the life she had

I think the reason Dylan was against the movie is the same reason those of us who hated the movie were against it. It just isn't the truth. I think they wanted to use Dylan as the love interest because he is a bigger name than Bob Neuwirth. She and Neuwirth had a 2 year relationship. I get frustrated too, babydoll :p

She also dated another one of Dylan's pals after she left New York and went to California to live with Nico for a bit. (When Nico was seeing Jim Morrison). It's all in the book. I think his name was Dino....I could be wrong (don't have my book with me). Every time I read it, I discover new little interesting facts.:D

BTW, Liberty Bell is Edie's niece and she is amazing!! She has been gracious enough to share stories, photos and childhood memories of Edie with us.

LibertyBell is her username, I think she stills check in from time to time, though she was alot more active here before.
Read her old posts, lots of interesting stuff :)

oh, and she´s a very cool lady :)

Thank you both!! :D I will look up her old posts.

That's very interesting KLove, I can't wait to read more about her! Do you have Edie: American Girl? Or Girl on Fire?

^I have both books but I am reading American Girl. I find something new every time I open it. And I have read it several times.

I really would like to talk to two people about Edie - Ed Hennessey and Bobby Anderson - They both seemed to be true blue friends to Edie and adore her. Oh, the stories they could tell. Ed was Edie's best friend at Cambridge (pre Warhol) and Bobby was who she lived with during the NY production of Ciao (post Warhol) - both gay, both seem so funny. :p I would love to meet them!!!!

His name was Dino Valenti and he wrote that song "Come on people now, smile on your brother, come to love one another right now" that Jefferson Airplane did. I think Edie just dated him briefly.

I would like to talk to the guy who wrote the last part in the Jean Stein book. I don't have my book right now so i can't look up his name.

The reason Dylan didn't want the movie to come out was because the whole movie was focused on a rumor! He should have sued their ***es.

Wow I am glad American Girl is so full of information!

Ah it would be nice to be able to talk to those who really knew Edie. She must have left a thrilling impact on everyone she met!

It's true I can see Dylan's point of view in this. If it really is all a full blown lie then it's a shame for him! Who knows..

I really like how "un-censored" this thread is by the way! It's so refreshing to be able to talk about just about everything here!

yes it's great to hear American Girl is good. Because there are so many books and films that I haven't gotten into because of all the rumours. I don't want to get mixed up with all the he said she said.
So I like to hear suggestions
But atleast it's a peak into the magical old New York

babydoll, you mean that part in the bar, with the cigarette, right? oh what was it he said! it´s so beautiful... I have to look in my book!

John Anthony Walker, a friend from Cambridge.
"Edie was a star who by mistake got incarnated into a human body, and never could figure it out and wanted to get back up there."

So damn beautiful!
