I don't think Pugh will go away as of yet, but it all depends on alot of things:
What will he do to sell, will he sell off-the-runway at extremely high prices? Or will he make some more toned-down garments for retail? Or will he keep saying "**** selling"?
He has some lovers in high places, Rick and Michelle is keeping him floating as of now, and I have a feeling they will carry on doing that. He certainly has gotten some new admirers now in Paris, he might float of his connections.
IF he moves "down" from Paris and back to London, it's uncertain how he will take it. He can see it in the perspective that he had his 15 minutes and is now free to do whatever the f*ck he wants, or he might take it as a kick in the teeth and start compromising, watering it all down - and from there it is really an uncertain road. He may pull it off brilliantly, and join Rick Owens, Ann D and McQueen or it will be half-arsed and poor, and he will be a one-hit-wonder that soon falters and disappear.
It is in general a whole lot of if, but my gut feeling is that he will keep his head above water, carry on refining his work and go to the top. What ever happenes, I think what he has done, and the flames (and discussions) he has started won't die anytime soon, and has opened an important door for fashion as more than dresses and suits. He won't be forgotten soon, no matter.
and vanwood, I think comparing Gareth and Rick is like asking what is the better of a certain flavour of ice cream and a certain flavour of chocolate. They don't try to do the same thing, and can not really be compared in any way. They coexist in different aspects of fashion.
