Gucci F/W 07.08 Milan

some clothes look amzing but some not, not my favorite collection so far

The thing with Tom Ford's Gucci is if you put his collections on today, they'd still look fresh, new and contemporary.

I highly doubt LMVH is keeping Frida simply because "they don't want to seem like another fashion house in trouble".

In fact, that notion is ridiculous. The bottom line is that if a collection doesn't sell and if there isn't enough profit, Frida is gone. It's all about economics. Gucci is a brand and a company - they need profit to survive. Frida provides them with profit therefore she stays.

I don't think it's ridiculous simply because when too many hands touch things, people get less and less interested. That would show a lack of stability and sign of failing brand. I think it would be riskier to get rid of her than to let her keep designing. That's my opinion.

And I don't doubt Frida's ability to design. I DO doubt her ability to design for Gucci.

Not a fan at all. I think the hair and makeup make the clothes look classier than they actually are, which isn't very. I agree that it's all over the place and just tries too hard.

I was expecting a lot more now that Yvan Mispleare is part of Frida's team. This isn't terrible but some of this is just so irrelevant. I do like the dresses though.
i actually think it's a major improvement and i think you can clearly see there is a new voice...

very nice grown up glamour...imo...
a good step in the right direction...

* agree with all who said that the make up is perfection...

* i find it rather odd that somehow so many have gone on a rant about frida giannini...

especially the first season that gucci is being designed by someone from CHLOE!!!!!!
this is the beginning of a new era at gucci...
and you may now being seeing (finally) who the gucci WOMAN is...
*thankfully it looks as though they are leaving the gucci GIRL behind...
...

* lena i agree-heavily influenced by YSL...
funny- marc jacobs was too this season...interesting...
i wonder what paris will bring....

:innocent:

I think Gucci has enormous power to educate its customers about what's good taste, and what clearly isn't. Becasue a good chunk of them are good ol' trend***res, it's nice at least that they will wear this.

But really, I think the collection (with the strong shoulders and the beautiful evening wear) was put together with a strong woman in mind. I think I'm even peaceful about the fact that 90% of this will get massacred on the red carpet..

.. so:clap:to Frida Giannini and Yvan Mispelaere

i thought yves was a member of the "team" not the main designer...just as marc, donna, etc. has a team...
essentially the major design duties (and the reviews, etc.) will fall on frida...she is driving the look...

i agree that it's an improvement over last season...
my comments were more about frida's inability to decide on a direction for the line...

I really think it's the opposite. The woman has gone and the girl has arrived. It's almost like that nutty Britney Spears song "not a girl...not yet a woman"... ecc. in the sense it looks like the Gucci female is confused as sin about her identity. She wants to progress, but does not know how. When I think of a true woman, I think of a female who has come into her own and exudes a strength. I don't get that here.......

And now that you mention someone from Chloé is on the team, that's probably the reason I don't like this because that's what it does look like these days. :innocent:

Well this is certainly different from Gucci under Tom - which, incidentally, I loved. His dark glamour, intricate details and everything exuding sensuality was fantastic. I really loved his stuff. This is all kind of "meh" to me - it's lost that edge, that glamour that I always associated with Gucci. Perhaps she's just taking it in another direction, but as someone else already said, Marc Jacobs (or Mark by MJ) is kind of in the same realm as this collection. I do like the boots, though...

Yeah, I would agree with that for the most part. I mean, there are some solid looks in this. But then at points it veers off into questionable territory (the plaid wool jodphurs!) and I was just expecting problems areas to be handled more delicately considering who they have now. I'm still dissapointed but I'll suck it up I'm sure. The eveningwear, as Lena had mentioned, is pretty great.

And I agree with Kuba's defense of Frida. I mean, not every label can be the spitting image of a directional couture house. Frida has found a niche and there's nothing wrong with that. I think as a whole her collections have been terrible, but slowly and steadily there's been more to like with each season.

They've got new help from Chloe, strong sales, and a clearer idea of what they're all about. Let's hope that gives us better collections in the future.

LOL, these aren't even that similar. Yes, the patent and buckle details and similar, but overall, the fabric, size, and style are different. I'd love to use one of the Gucci bags as a carry-on piece of luggage.

Well, there's the obvious 70's references she's been making in the past few collections. This is a stark difference from the generic Tom Ford Fachinetti had pulled out and of course Ford's own minimal/glam/cyber/sexpot thing he worked to death.

She's got a knack for reworking aspects of obscure nostalgia into cute, commerical, and appealing clothes. There was the resort collection based on blue porcelain china, last season's late 60's/early 70's london/hippie feel, and now you have this early 70's half YSL half European social club vibe. She's drawing on a really cheesy italian luxury vocabulary. Personally I hate it, but, it's a look. And it's selling.

not linking it too much... i think last winter was so much better and so was summer...
this could have been a random 2001 2003 collection... boring and old...

I may be the only one, but I liked the past couple of seasons of Gucci under Frida. Perhaps the collections were a bit schizophrenic, but it was glamorous and on-trend, and even though there were flaws it seemed like she was improving little by little.

Perhaps that is what the Gucci customer is all about. Glamour. She wants to keep the glamour, but reinvent her look a bit every now and then. Perhaps the Gucci woman is a teenage girl at heart, one who has yet to find herself. Or perhaps she's just a trend wh*re. And perhaps that's what Frida is all about too.

This collection seems to fit with that, but I don't like this as much as her past collections. I hate that print that she used, and I think a lot of the pieces come off as a bit frumpy. But maybe the Gucci woman is feeling that this season.
