Gucci F/W 07.08 Milan

Hum ... some of that stuff looks like it came out of DECADES -vintage store- ... Id REALLY like her to explain this collection to US

What the heck??? When Tom was at Gucci, a lot saw him as nothing more than a glorified stylist. He pushed that Gucci logo more than Frida does imo. I liked Frida's past cruise collection and her her use of the archive prints (pineapple, flora, etc.), and the jewelry also. I can walk into Gucci and find a ton of things that I like. I spend more on Gucci today than I did in the past (on the menswear stuff of course). I don't like this collection but at the end of the day it's just clothes, right? Although at the same time it's refreshing to see people so passionate about fashion!!(even if you disagree). I love all of you guys though!

Beyond cheese. Gucci is no longer a compass on the fashion map. It doesn't set the mood or change the direction of fashion. Maybe that's fine if it's selling like no tomorrow and the execs are probably more interested in a mid-range label that sells than an ultra high-fashion, couture-like label that just has the image. But I think Tom Ford managed to hit a happy medium between the two.

People keep on asking who the Gucci Woman is. I think Frida under Frida the Gucci woman has sort of become the Gucci Girl. By that I think the Gucci Girl is now someone younger who really enjoys dressing up and doesn't really have a set look. One day she'll try to be a little bohemian the next she'll try to do old Saint Laurent, the next she'll try Hollywood glamour and after that who knows where she'll sample from. But the point is she's a girl who's trying to find her own look by exploring all the possibilities. In this way I think Frida is perfect. She's really the only one in fashion who can do modern youthful and energetic.

Diamond Star, did you yoink my avatar??
I love the hair and makeup - i really like some of the dresses.
The Gucci thread always confuses me - can someone explain to me what they wish Frida would do as opposed to what she actually does?
I am just beginning to familiarize myself with Tom Ford Gucci...
What is it that everyone misses? Is it just a certain je ne c'est quoi?
Please. Discuss.

At least I love the makeup. I am not keen of the sex look, hence this collection IMO JMO is not as bad as full of sex.... I said it :innocent:

it'll sell, but it won't move fashion forward

Good question. What I think Gucci was about a young, confident woman first of all (Frida has now turned it into like a teenage girl almost!). To me, it had this feeling of luxurious minimalism. The luxury was in the details of each piece. The luxury was in the materials and fabrics. It was in the cuts and color choices. Tom Ford's pieces were like great buildings, in my eyes, in the sense that far away, it may just look like a building. However, the closer you get up to it, the more detail and construction you were able to see and appreciate. His colors were kept to a minimum, yet they were not boring or dull at all (he basically has the same palette as Giorgio Armani, but who uses them better?). I don't mind Frida using prints, but she uses them in such a common way. Gucci is not supposed to be common. Also I guess, with the Gucci woman, it was a complete lifestyle and image that was associated with the brand. No, it wasn't sex. It was a glamour and nonchalant attitude. A non-standard Beauty circulated around Gucci. Every time I watched a Gucci show or looked at a photo, I got a sense of a woman that was just amazingly self-assured. I understood what Tom Ford and his image was. I have yet to say that about Frida........

Here are some more photos to familiarize those who aren't that familiar with Tom Ford (from FW 2003; Style.com)

And now the work under Frida's direction....
I absolutely agree with metal-on-metal about the medium between commercialism and couture-like elements with Tom. I just don't see the same craftmanship in Frida's work.

(I can't post anymore of this.......)

However, I do like the fact she has brought back that Gucci crest as I like that. She just needs to use it right.

uh...

you just described marc jacobs...
that's his client...the lower east side girl that marc is friends with, who wants to don jeweled heeled sandals one season, then go rummaging through her mom's vintage ysl the next...

the difference is with marc, there are signature marc touches that make it his own...
with frida, there is nothing "her own"...

her first collection (s/s 2006) was an interesting step in a new and fresh direction...
that collection garnered wide critical acclaim from tfs'ers, press, and celebs...

Giannini's take on Gucci's brand of sexy is more a matter of a bared back than an exposed front. She designed her long, linear "hostess" gowns with "a party with friends" in mind, rather than full-on occasions. A couple of them strayed into Rochas territory, but the best, a long cyclamen gown, and the finale, with its pin-tucked top, puff sleeves, and embroidered crystal flowers, had enough presence to go anywhere. Like Phoebe Philo at Chloé, Giannini is determined to set a mandate for a new kind of wearability. Whatever else this collection had going for it, it was different enough to prove that the page has been turned on the dark, erotic look of Tom Ford's nineties.

but she seemed to stop mid thought and went down another road...and another...and another...

well, I think its definately an improvement from her past collections. Less tacky.
The make-up and hair are divine though!

I think it's a miss on the prints, but the other items have that Gucci factor to them...the accessories are always a great staple in the Gucci collections...I'm not taken back by this collection, but I feel Frida is progressing steadily

I'm not sure, it reminds a bit of the s/s 2006 gucci, which was 30's shapes also...this is 30's shapes but in the winter...
I can't help but notice how the hair of cavalli and gucci look alike...it worked for cavalli, but not for gucci
For me the gucci girl is not that glamourous...she is a bit hard, edgy, sexier than others...I see something inconstant on Frida's work, and after 4 seasons, I think I can say I don't like her, she is been doing everything, the disco, the boho the 30's now glamour...and it's not convincing me
even the bags are bad

I think she is retracing the steps of the 70s basically. Collection after collection is another moment of 70s fashion, revised and distilled to Gucci. I like it - it makes great images :D And, I have to say, I find it far more exciting than Tom Ford...Predictability really is the kiss of death.
