OK I'm mad now because I have lost my huge posts twice now! But anyway, I finished re-reading on Wednesday and its so much better second time around.
First off I really loved this book, its not my favourite (thats OOTP for sure) but it was well written (except for the end) and the characters were better than ever. However, I wish there could be an "adult version" (not just a change in the cover) as I think JKR is really constrained by the children audience of the book, so issues are not fully explored. I agree that Arina could have been raped, I didn't think that when reading but now its been suggested it does, sadly, make sense
I cried so damn much this time! Especially Harry walking to his death, his bravery and strength was just overwhelming, as well as when he was talking to the people who had died for him
. The theme of love was also so sad as well: Lily's love for Harry, Xeno's (sp?) love for Lily, Snape's for Lily, between the trio, Narcissa's for Malfoy....the love in the book is so beautiful, kinda a "Love conquers all" message.
I also loved the reform of Snape, it would have been so much easier for her to make him completely evil. I feel so sorry for him, and his complete deovtion and unconditional love for Lily, to the point where he would do anything for her, even when she was dead, was so touching. Yes he was mean to Harry, but seeing the living proof that the love of your life didn't love you and loved your arch enemy instead must be terrible. I also like the fact Dudley is quite sweet in this book, and the fact him and Harry settle on good terms is nice I think. Although, I would have liked to have seen Draco redeemed more, as I don't think he is an evil person at all. Scared and cowardly yes, but evil, no. In these last two books I feel so sorry for him, as he is forced to the "dark side". Kreacher turning good though was great! He's one of my new faveourite characters, so cute!
My oppinion of Dumbledore is even higher now, as knowing he has made mistakes makes him more human and easier to empathise with. I also think that the fact he was willing to sacrafice Harry (who I do really believe he cared about) for the rest of the world, shows tremendous strength of character. I also think the locket is an intersting twist, and the way it changes Ron. I think Ron is a very interesting character as he is one everyone can identify with. We all have experienced that feeling of jealousy, inadequacy, feeling second best etc. I think this is why I prefer him over Harry, as its hard to identify with him.
I hate the ending but I suppose it provides "closure", which is what many people wanted. "Albus Severus" is an aful name though. I also would have liked to have knows more about Luna, Draco and Teddy. I also disliked the deaths of Tonks', Lupin's and Fred's deaths, as they are so undeveloped and unemotional. I mean, Hedwigs death was more emotional than a new mother and fathers, and one of the best characters in the series.
I also agree that the last battle was really lame, come one we have been waiting 10 years for this!! Bit of an anticlimax. I also think Neville should have been able to kill Bellatrix.
I wish she had answered this question:
What did Dumbledore see in the mirror of Erised??
I've wanted to know this ever since the first book. We can geuss it was bringing Arina back or something but I wish she gave a definate answer!
I'm still in denial that its all over, I wish there would be more books
