that's what i was thinking as well zazie. i've seen plenty of his pieces that i would deem functional. even some of his more experimental items.
now the collection,it's not that bad. it's definitely not as dynamic as we know he's capable but he's been paving this more commercially oriented path for a few seasons now so i dunno if i understand the surprise. i mean you take away the production of the 'show' you do actually get a collection like this.
Scott, good point, and he must surely sell to survive.
I don't mind not having the bells and whistles, the "show" to wow the press, etc., but the pieces themselves are lacking this time, except for some glimpses of his genius in some jackets and intricately arranged dresses. There are so many commercial dresses out there at Balmain, Cavalli, etc..not sure if his efforts would be similarly appreciated.
It's not like him to take the easy route, even from his early days. I do hope it's more external issues that will go away, and not a difficult time for him internally. He is a very sensitive soul, a good one, but shy and introverted. More than most other designers, Chalayan's collections are often a reflection of his inner labyrinthian designer mind. So this collection makes me very uncomfortable, not just for the lacklustre efforts.
This is by no means a bad collection, it just isn't up to his meticulous standards.
The big brands will survive, I'm terrified this terrible financial meltdown will take its toll most on the younger, lesser known but talented designers, Chalayan,Theyskens, etc...
