James Cameron's AVATAR

You just answered your question there.

Except, I would say the writing was laughable, the story was bland, cliche and unoriginal, the whole 'save the earth' politics was too heavy handed, and the acting (save for Zoe) was pretty dull.

The movie is visual effects. If you take that away, you have nothing.

this basically. I know my comment is 4 years later, but I saw this movie in theaters (in 3D) and thought it was just a retelling of Pocohantas. In my mind it is still just a glorified Hollywood version of Pocohontas with different characters and absolutely stunning visuals. How on earth are they going to make THREE more films. I feel like Hollywood decided that this made too much money not to have sequels no matter how utterly unnecessary they might be.

Supposedly, James Cameron has been working with people to create new technology for the next three films, I just hope it isn't at the expense of a great story. Because if that's the case, I don't see the difference between movies like Avatar versus a movie like Fast and Furious (if you understand what I mean).

I completely agree with you- Avatar is overrated. And also, it really does feel like a retelling of Pocahontas or of practically any story where the natives are "rescued" by someone who isn't from within their culture. I don't know, I feel like Avatar glorifies this idea too much. I totally understand having new technologies (even if I'm not a fan of 3D) but to me that means nothing if the story isn't good. I wish that instead of making three more films in the series, the studio would give the money that they are giving James Cameron to other directors, I mean, think about how much he's getting to make them, it's insane!
