teenvogue.comM.A.C. Viva Glam Ambassador Lady Gaga's Self-Confidence Secrets
Lady Gaga and I are sitting in a hushed hotel suite in Tokyo. She's dressed in a blingy, Swarovski crystal-studded nude lace jumpsuit, a tulle wedding veil, and ten-inch Alexander McQueen lobster-claw shoes; I'm wearing a neon Mickey Mouse T-shirt and lacy ghost-patterned skirt, and sporting triangle-shaped hair and hot-pink lipstick. No, darlings, believe it or not, this was not a dream. How did I come to meet my musical muse? Well, after seeing her perform at the Marc Jacobs Spring/Summer 2010 after-party, a Foundation for AIDS Research benefit, and Radio City Music Hall, I began to think that the lyrics of "Paparazzi" ("I'm your biggest fan/I'll follow you until you love me") were written just for me. Luckily, I was invited to join M.A.C. on a whirlwind trip to Japan to meet her royal Gaga-ness and to learn more about her involvement with the M.A.C. AIDS Fund, which to date has earned more than $180 million for research and prevention. Click read more for Gaga's wisdom!
Teen Vogue: Congratulations on being a M.A.C. Viva Glam girl!
Lady Gaga: I'm so happy. M.A.C. helped me develop my bravery--it was the only beauty brand that I could relate to as a young person. I remember seeing Boy George and RuPaul in the window displays!
Teen Vogue: Tell us about your Viva Glam shade.
Lady Gaga: It's modeled after Pink Nouveau. But I wanted to make it more accessible so we can get as much money as possible for AIDS awareness. I didn't design this lipstick for it to be a status product--it's selfless. Every dollar goes toward helping women.
Teen Vogue: What's the key message when it comes to AIDS prevention?
Lady Gaga: Worldwide, girls as young as thirteen are losing their virginity and contracting HIV. There's a sentiment of "it won't happen to me" or "it's a gay disease." All those things are false, false, false! Use a condom! Or don't have sex: You don't have to do it to feel love. And you certainly don't need to have sex on the first or even fifth date. Even Lady Gaga doesn't have sex right now--she's celibate.
Teen Vogue: How has your fashion sense changed throughout the years?
Lady Gaga: When I was in high school, fashion was just about wealth. That's why it's so important for me to maintain my sense of self now in fashion--and why I let my fans write all over my Birkin bags. You know, if it weren't for you guys, I'd never have been able to afford this bag. I look at it as art that celebrates my favorite bag and my favorite monsters.
Teen Vogue: Has your sense of confidence evolved?
Lady Gaga: Your friend Lady Gaga was not a "cool" girl in school. And today I'm a strong, courageous woman. I didn't discover myself until I was out of high school. When there's nobody judging you every day, you're forced to look inside and be who you truly are. At the end of the day, you won't be happy until you love yourself.
Gaga's toughest competition? Possibly herself. "Bad Romance" and "Telephone" are both in the running for best choreography and video of the year.
