Model Casting F/W 07.08

So, what do we think so far? Any new trends in models? Who's doing good, who isn't? Same questions as every season...

well by judging diana moldova's thread, this girl is having a blast at nyc. she's been doing tons of shows

I think the trend continues on from last season, that we're moving away from the babydoll looks and going for girls with very unique features. Features that set them apart and throw "classical," "normative," beauty standards to the side. Iekeliene's cheekbones. Bruna's nose. Alana's long face. Suvi's strong jaw line...

The modeling industry is definitely geared towards finding the next quirky beauty as oppossed to finding the next big-eyed, triangular shaped, alien/babydoll faces of the past. That's all I know at this point. I still thing its a lit early to tell who's really going to change standards and be the next big face, but when I see them I'll let you know

ok, maybe not all I have to say. It seems like supreme is reigning supreme again (pun not intended). Carol Sippel is everywhere and so is Cecilia, Suvi, Rachel and Heidi. They definately seem to have changed and defined the image of modelling for right now and thats reflected on the catwalk

I have one major complaint though when I look at this seasons casting. There are so so many blank faces out there atm. Girls that are all cutesiewootsie and adorable (not in a bugeye/alien-way) but have no expression or distinctive features at all...I can't tell them apart at all! Except for the established faces and some other exceptions such as the Supreme girls mentioned above, this is what I am seeing.

Right now we're seeing slews of new girls, that agencies are considering themselves lucky to get in to these shows. The vast majority of the NYC shows aren't known for casting and making new girls (minus Marc and Calvin). Not to mention of course, that a lot of the designers we've seen, don't necessarily have the name to command big faces, or enough credability to break new stars. As for Supreme, of course they're dominating because they've managed to brand a style around their agency, rather than just making careers. Incredibly smart move that I love from a merchandising standpoint. You know exactly what kind of girl would be under Supreme's management.

I do think that there are a lot of amorphous girls floating around these shows, but I think the pack will clear out come Milan and we'll see who's really going to have the staying power. So far, Ali Michaels, Diana Moldovan, Darla Baker, Dasha, Maryna Linchuk, Jessica Pitti, and Olga Sherer seem to have the most potential to me to make a break for Milan. I think its a little too early to tell though in most cases other than Diana Moldovan. Then again, we all know there will be some new face who opens Prada that makes us all gasp!

I think Elsa Sylvan is doing well. She's done a few shows in NY so far.

Georgia seems to be doing very well in NY considering this is her first big season after her slew of ads.

The baby-doll, wide-eyed trend is definitely waning. Gemma's leave (temporary but still, she's not there) has sort of left them without a leader. The ones left over who are currently still doing NYFW are: Jessica Stam, Sasha Pivovarova, Vlada R., Heather Marks, Caroline Trentini. Coco Rocha seems to be at every show and Irina must be exhausted by now. In many cases, the industry is turning over it's models and the new models are beginning to dominate.

I'm not sure if I like that or not.....but well, as long as I'm rooting for someone.....

A face I've seen quite a bit of is Margaret Peppey (Vision). Models like her and Georgia Frost are definitely the look du jour.

I have to agree though about the distinctive looks-Iekeliene is having yet another all-star season and Ajuma is doing INSANELY well compared to previous seasons. We all know that Diana Moldovan is going to be one of the girls of the season though.

I totally forgot about Georgia Frost. Ooops. She'll carry over no problem.

GlassAngel I do agree though that we're reaching a turning point soon in models. Its really kind of hard to identify it before it happens, but we're seeing it slowly but surely. Daria's absence was really what started it in my mind. Her school of models, (Gemma, Raquel, Caroline, Heather, Stam, Vlada, Diana, Eugenia, Hana, Julia S.) are all starting to really either hit peaks, or move towards being much more selective of the shows that they're doing, thus making more room for the next school models to take over (Behati, Bette, Coco, Julia D., Sasha, Snejana, Vlada) running the gammit of runways.

It is a shortlived career and I don't think anyone doubts that, but its funny to think about it academically and see the progression.

i agree. i can tell carol sippel and daiane appart from the the crowd, but maryna l?

i think one of the biggest casting moves this season has been marc jacobs. i think there were more anonymous faces than well known models this season

Missing Models In This Season's Casting?

Have you noticed that a lot of designers seem to use a lot of "nameless" models this season? That a lot of girls who previously do every show have been turning up in just one or two? What is up with that? New girls can hardly walk (most of the time) and just don't have the presence that comes with experience. Who do you think is missing out this fall winter?
