Prada F/W 06.07 Milan

I really like this. I love the heaviness of this collection but I could do without the fur detailing on the coats and the animal prints.

I like this, and I am not really a Prada fan. Prada is very insignificant on my fashion horizon, as are most of the Italian designers. People seem to be disagreeing with it on two points. The first is that it is derivative. Would anyone be able to substantiate this accusation? First of all, all fashion, all arts are derivitave because they are social markers. Second of all this is not particularly derivative at all. Okay the structure of the bustiers are reminicent of Lang or Proenza Schouler but I can't think of a time when that sort of bustier has been paired with the heavy weave knit of some of the jumpers. It is like the love child of Kurt Cobain and Jane Austen went to a party. I think that is what I liked best about it. I mean we all feel the houses becoming darker and more frivolous that before and I have been wondering how this would work out. Since the 90s, it has gone, grunge, minimalism, Brazilian revolution, ladylike and supersize. Each trend being very far removed but not indestinguishably from the one before. I mean it couldn't have gone grunge -> Brazilian revolution because that would be too antithetical. Fashion evolves, it doesn't go from random point to random point. People wouldn't be able to adjust their tastes fast enough. So the last year or so has been about supersizing and architecturising the ladylike. It has been Balenciagas heyday once again. So it was hard to imagine taking that gorgeous structure and making it grungy again. Prada has given an idea of how it would go. Her structure does not come from poofs and air-under-tulip-skirts. It comes from layering, from yards of fabric held around the waist like a latterday 90s punk and his hood jumper tied around his waist. If the Fresh Prince went gothic, female, post-millenial and scrubbed up a bit (a stretch of the imagination, I'll admit!) this is where he would be -well if Miuccia grew out of her dislike of black models that is.

The second point at which people seem to be disliking this, is because her use of fur is ugly and contrived. If something is contrived or not, is very subjective and I dont personally see it. Admittedly contrived in fashion is so unapolagetically contrived (think CDGs recent collections -all that Vivienne Westwood and Rolling Stones love) that my standards may have fallen but I still dont think it is an issue. As for it being ugly, I think if something is ugly but it doesn't look messy, that it can be a beautiful surprising form of ugly and this is what fashion is macrocosmically anyway.

Sorry for my ramblings. I haven't ventured into the designer thread for a bit and it is good to be back :p
