So You Want to Become a Model? (PLEASE READ POST #1 BEFORE POSTING)

Okay, I'm not in the modeling industry at all (at least not yet!) but from what I gather, they fudge height measurments more than bust-waist-hip measurements. I mean I'm sure they might mess with them a little bit, but overall not that much. Since most models are US 2-4, I think, they won't be any larger than 35-25-35. Like you said, if they are larger, they won't fit into samples, etc... But I don't think you will have a problem!! By the looks of your photos, you are certainly thin enough!

you were proably reading about my experience at major model management. My scars also are very, very faint, and in not that noticeable places, and could be photoshopped out pretty easily, but she pinpointed them immediately. I might have mentioned this before but she said that models need to be flawless so scars weren't acceptable. I don't know if that's how it is with other agencies, but that's how it was at major.

Once again, I'm not in the industry but from what I gather, I think it depends on how much the agency likes you. I have heard of so many people turned away from agencies because they are "too fat". But if the agency thinks you have the potential to be the next Gisele or Daria, then they might sign you and have you work on losing a few pounds. But once again...you look to be skinny enough now! It seems hard to believe you have 36.5 hips...not to give offense or anything, but are you sure you're getitng that measurement properly?

I sure don't see any visible overbite!

Good luck! :D

Thanks, you helped answer my questions a lot! Thanks to yourbestfriend too.

As for model weight, I have seen a lot of models' weights as being around 115. Weight really has nothing to do with thinness though, I have a 5'11" friend who weighs 140 and is just as thin, if not thinner, than I am, while I weight 130 and am taller than her. Weight really doesn't matter.

This thread has helped me so much..
I modelled as a child, and I vaguely remeber it. Now I'm 15 and I'm interested in starting it again. I'm 5 9" and 34-27-34. I'm sure my waist is far too big, but any advice is greatly recieved. Basically, I have quite a good knowledge of the designers, (i've read Vogue & Elle since I was 13) will this help me at all? Even when I'm just starting out?
SHould I start with local agencies or send some to the big agencies in London? It's a terrible cliche, but it is my dream to be a high fashion model. I have a VERY supportive mum. Do you send of photo's and they'll contact you if they're interested? I'm guessing there's a very high chance that your photo's will just go straight in the bin?
Any answers are so greatly appreciated.

I really doubt that is true. I mean, I wear size 0-2 jeans and I am 5"9 and weigh about 120 pounds or so. If you are at the height 5"11 it must be nearly impossible to be THAT light unless you were doing so by unhealthy means, and in that case, I'd think the unhealthiness would be more apparent.

actually i'm about 5'10 1/2 and last time i checked 112, and quite healthy thank you very much.

Look back to the first few pages they should answer your questions :flower:

I emailed my picture to Models1 and got a reply the next day. I got the standard 'Although you've very pretty, we don't feel you're right for our agency'. Then they gave me the number for a list of all approved modelling agencies. Which was nice:)
It definately hasn't put me off though..

If you use e-mail to submit your photos/info to any agency, do they usually reply by e-mail? I mean, obviously they won't create a phone bill by calling rejections, but if they're interested will they phone you or e-mail you?

That means like they like you enough to reply, if they thought you ddint have potential at all, no email would have been sent ;)

Aww wow :) I checked my inbox this morning and I was so amazed to get a reply from Models 1 - even if it was a 'no'. Models1 is just - wow. Really encouraging stuff...

agencies advice

I really would like to know the kind of advice that agencies give to models on how to keep and enhance their beauty, on how to 'lose weight in the legs' and that kind of stuff. Could any model or former model tell us more about it...
I suppose they encourage you to do some fitness, but what else? I would like to know these very well kept secrets who make these girls look so amazing anytime.
Do they recommend special products, pills...?

The Models1 site only has space to submit one picture, did you sumbit a full length one or a face one? :flower:

I don't think they would tell you to take diet pills or anything. They just tell you to eat healthily, exercise, and they recommend skin and hair care routines. I think they tell you certain exercises to tone certain body parts without making them too muscular.

Well yes, but what do they mean by 'eating healthy'. Because I eat 'healthy' but that doesn't make my body looks modellike. I'd like to know if they tell them not to eat too much meat, or no bread for example...
No former model here to tell us a bit more about it?

I gave a face one, just because there's quite alot about stats there anyway. Let me know how you get on:flower:

Agencies send some of their girls to the gym but as far as being your nutritionist they're not. They sign you because they think you have potentional and unfortunately at the moment the thin look is in. I don't want to turn this into a weight issue/eating habits thread so NO ,they are not going to watch every bite of food that does or does not enter your mouth. Your body is either model material or it's not.

Quit full time modeling to start a family now doing it part time(self managing myself, no agency) while enjoying being with my family. When I first started, I use to go to the gym daily like for an hour of workout and it was tiring, I eventually discovered Hatha Yoga(Pilates is great too) which to me was great, a bit like cheating if you ask me but the results are fab and not as tiring. I do it 15 minutes every day and love it. It tones the body like a dream.Ok on the 'eating healthy' bit, it's also about portioning.I also discovered that the only way to flatten my tummy before a show or photo shoot was to avoid carbs with every meal for a few days, so I enjoy steak and salad , chicken and salad with a dressing of my choice! Much nicer than having potatoes with it that are mashed with nothing in them and no salad dressing or is it just me?Good luck.

 I just sent in pics through email to Stam's mother agency. Ahhh. I've never actually taken concrete steps towards modeling before. I don't even know why I did it because I'm not particularly interested in that agency. The only Canadian one I'm really interested in is Mode and possibly Elmer Olsen's agency, not Michele's International Models. I don't really expect a reply though haha, their website isn't very... updated looking or organized or professional looking. I just really want to get a pro opinion and stuff. Ahhh. If they actually reply and are interested I don't know what I'm going to do lol. I actually hope it's a rejection now lol. I was going to email Mode, but I can't upload pics right now and I don't have the kind of snapshots they want on my computer at the moment...

Well there, I submitted my pics to Elmer Olsen as well. They used to not really have a site but they do now... hmmm... I don't know what just got into me lol.

got it all but the skin. damn im 16 still fighting with acne

Ive heard stories from people in the biz that alot of agencies mean by "eating Healthy"= as little as possible, sorry but in that business it is an ugly reality.

ahhhhhh I remember when I was 112 (I'm 5'11"") That lasted until I was about 25 - then unforuntately it increased rather quickly
