HELSINKI - Hot summer tourist destination

Helsinki will be a very popular tourist destination this summer especially as the city is hosting the world's biggest sports event this summer, the athletics world championships.

are you from Finland? what's the point of this thread? if you are a Finn, please answer in finnish.:flower:

it's pretty (and small), but those pics are quite...idealistic, should I say. and they're taken from one area, and the "real" Helsinki isn't that nice.those pictures are from the most beautiful area,in my opinion.

and right now, the weather sucks.how can it still snow in April?! is the ice age coming?

I know, it's really really weird that it is still snowing.

I live about 15 km away from helsinki and right now little snowflakes are taking over. Something is really messed up.

I love Helsinki too, just the annoying thing is that everything is being renovated so there are ugly construction sites all over the city (like in Kamppi). Otherwise it's great in summer, I start hating it in winter and then always fall back in love with it when spring comes.
Here are some more pics from Helsinki.

My boyfriend and I used to live on this street, where there's the sign MOCAMBO, there's now a club called Soho- if you live in Helsinki or come here you should check it out, it's quite nice.

And this is why you shouldn't come here in winter:

^second that! at summer Helsinki can be so beautiful...

there can be so many ugly places and buildings in Helsinki!
what about Makkaratalo?and the new hotel in Elielinaukio?they are just depressing.

I heard that when Sedu bought Mocambo, he turned it to a lousy place...is that true? (to people outside Finland, Sedu is trying to build this monopoly position to himself in the nightlife of Helsinki(and Turku and Tampere, other big cities),and there's been a lot of discussion about this...a lot of people are anti-Sedu,and say he's ruining everything he touches.)

anyway, Helsinki is nice in the summer, but I'd rather live somewhere else.

Yeah, come on over. (unless you ARE a local??). I'm gonna escape the tourists to the country side when summer's here B)

Helsinki looks beautiful- I would love to go this summer.

Any particularly good/unusual shops, bars or restaurants that I should go to?

here's couple of good restaurants, it depends on what's your budget.my personal favorites are Santa Fe in Aleksanterinkatu, it's quite cheap, but has great atmosphere and yummy Mexican food.and water is free.

My other fave is Farouge, but it's not that cheap. It serves Lebanonian food.

Therused to be a really, really good italian restaurant, but I cannot remember the name...I'm not sure if it even exists anymore.

as for shopping...well, you aren't gonna find Gucci and Chanel here.there are some cute shops in Eira and Punavuori.also check out Bulevardi (boulevard).and Aleksanterinkatu, there's cheaper shops like Mango, Zara, Esprit,H&M, and this little shopping centre called Kämp.there's also the biggest department store in Finland, Stockmann. If you want to buy Marimekko, it has two shops in Esplanadi.

everything depends on what's your budget, actually.

This is what I posted in the "Second hand shopping in Helsinki?"- thread (I'll just copy and paste:
"In Helsinki there's a shop called Ruuturouva (Fredrinkatu 16) which is quite good, they don't always have a lot of stuff but I found a really cute Jil Sander dress there once and they have a lot of nice jewelry.
Play it again sam (Rauhankatu 2) is good if you're looking for clothes from a certain era, '60s, '70s etc.
Also Ivana Helsinki (Merimiehenkatu 22) and Nanso (Mikonkatu 2) are good for the vintage look."
So that was for vintage shopping. And as for designers, go to Della Marga on Esplanadi for Chanel (bags), Giorgio Armani(via Borgonuovo, Collezioni, Jeans), Sonia Rykiel, D&G, Voyage, Versace, Cavalli, Ungaro, Krizia and See by Chloe. Then Kaarina K. (Kasarmikatu 25) for Charles Jourdan, Chloe, Lacroix, Givenchy, Gaultier, Moschino and Narciso Rodriquez. There's Mulberry on a small street off Esplanadi. Then on Korkeavuorenkatu there's Valkoinen Elefantti, they have really interesting clothes, I love it. And there are some other stores on that street and good restaurants as well.
