^Correct. The agency most often reserves the right to do such, but they also might pass over dropping someone if they're financially successful, or especially if worried about upsetting a mother agent with whom they have a good relationship.

But all in all, evedwards answer is more correct.

Yes i know the purpose of a booking agent i just wondered how do they hear about castings in order to tell the model. Will larger agencies have more contacts so more jobs to send the models to. How would say a new agency go about getting these contacts which will obviously grow over time as they become a more trusted agency eg: prada would not get their models from a small independant not reputable agency?

The client has to know to call the agency with the casting, and the bookers have those contacts. Usually a new agency is started by someone who has worked at another agency and already has the relationships with the clients. If not, they would then need to hire bookers who do have great relationships with top clients so you can find out about the jobs and castings and have the client willing to see the models.

I guess its pretty obvious that the whole industry will have to makes some adjustments in response to the global downturn, but I wonder if some of the smaller agencies will be closing with the recession, or if the bookers/scouts will just become a lot more selective about who they take on.. will be interesting to see.

some small agencie are actualy financially much more healthier than some big names, believe me:innocent:

but overall, it is clearly hard time for everybody, hard to get payment, tariff going down to get contracts...
i think the hardest time is for agencies who started just in the last 2-3 years and who did not reach yet a good regular turnover before to be hit by the current problems.

Does anyone know about any agencies in the Philadelphia area? Seems unlikely. haha. I guess my best option is to just travel to NYC.

The current economic times are very difficult for modeling agencies. There will be a thinning of the herd as there is so much less work to go around.

In other threads people have noted that Irene Marie (Miami), Gilla Roos (NY), R&G (NY) have recently closed. A representative from Irene Marie said business was down 90%. Other agencies may be in jeopardy, so keep that in mind if you are with/would like to be with an agency.

The actor's union (SAG) has a very good warning that also applies to models. Keep in mind any authorizations you have signed and cancel them in writing. Try to collect on your vouchers from your agency in a timely way. Watch for warning signs. If the agency goes under, contact the clients directly to attempt to collect. Store more of your materials yourself. Unfortunately models do not have anyone like SAG to look after them.

Advice from SAG:

SAG Warns on Gilla Roos Agency

BlogStage has a story reporting that the Gilla Roos agency in New York has closed its doors, and that SAG is warning actors to end any relationship they may have with the agency. According to the notice sent out by SAG, the agency’s franchise has been revoked:
· No member of the Screen Actors Guild may hereafter engage, use or deal through this agency.
· All contracts in force between this agency and the members of Screen Actors Guild are ipso facto and without further notice terminated except that the agency may retain and collect any commissions earned under said contracts prior to the inactivation of franchise.
· Members shall not be under any obligation to pay commissions to the agent on any moneys earned by members after the termination of the agency contracts, even though such moneys are earned by members on employment contracts in existence at the date of termination of the agency contracts.
SAG advises that any and all claims relating to Gilla Roos must be filed with the Guild no later than the close of business on Wednesday, March 11, 2009. Claims submitted after this deadline may be disallowed.
The contacts to file claims or ask questions are Renae Barnwell, NY Agency Business Representative at (212) 827-1438, or Xochitl Cerda, Senior Manager of Agency Relations at (323) 549-6735

Bertrand Hennet, the chief executive of Elite World, has been charged with buying and transporting cocaine, in the latest scandal to hit the industry.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/wor...f-Elite-model-agency-charge-over-cocaine.html

(Elite World is separate from Elite in the U.S.)
(articles on this subject have a picture of Kate Moss generally.)

Great article from frockwriter on this (see article for numerous links:(

Hilariously, Elite Model Management president, Gerald Marie, dismissed the arrest as an "epiphenomenon", claiming that although he is "surprised" by the incident, Hennet is not involved in the day-to-day running of the agency.

Oh yes, that's right, Hennet only heads up Elite's high profile international scouting event, the Elite Model Look contest, which involves a large number of young teenage hopefuls.

A spokesman for Elite World is quoted as saying that the Hennet debacle, “is an isolated case."

Well, isolated to this decade, is what he meant to say presumably.

In 1999, Elite Model Management - then the world's biggest model agency (a title that has since been usurped by IMG Models) - found itself at the epicentre of the modelling industry’s biggest scandal, after a current affairs team from the BBC led by Donal MacIntyre conducted an undercover investigation into the Milan modelling scene.

The exposé, which sent shockwaves through the industry, revealed that girls as young as 13 were being pressured into sex and drugs by those in trust, with one model booker from the Marilyn agency admitting that she supplied cocaine to models.

The actions of the Elite agency were particularly damaging.

Elite executives were overheard calling black models "*******" and making racist jokes, whilst Gerald Marie, who was at the time the president of Elite Europe, propositioned an undercover female reporter who was posing as a model – and boasted on camera that he planned to seduce the Elite Model Look finalists, whose average age was 15.

Needless to say, many may well be surprised to hear that Marie even still has a job at Elite, let alone a senior position at the company - having stepped down in disgrace in the wake of the 1999 scandal.

The news follows almost a year to the day that the head of the UN's Office on Drugs and Crime, Antonio Maria Costa, slammed "coke- snorting fashionistas" such as Amy Winehouse, Kate Moss and Pete Doherty, for glamorising drug use.

All three celebrities have strong connections to the fashion industry in the various capacities of paid model, booked entertainer and/or designer muse.

Needless to say, it promises to be a fun week.

Does anyone have any more info on Basic and whether or not they're good in NY?

Also, I've noticed that Wilhelmina has been getting a lot of hype from MDC and some other bloggers--is Wilhelmina really going to get back up top? I've heard so much smack about them in the past few years but what are they like compared to say a small, boutique agency?

Wilhelmina has brought in top agents from elite and is stepping up their game. Too early to say how they will do and what will happen. We will see.

What do people think of Premier Models in London? I've heard all good so far (compared to some other agencies, anyway), and they seem good to me, but I was just wondering what others think.

Premier Models are very good ,I heart in German television good things but also one not so nice thing ,but its not allowed to talk it here

Premier is a really, really good agency... then you will always hear bad things about this or that agency from other people, just don't trust these ones :flower:
