^ I bought the same skirt (or extremely similar) in black and tan in regular sizes there last summer ;)

ah yes Laura, not really the most stylish of stores. Collarscholar, I would just suggest that your friend pretty much get everything altered. Yes, it's more expensive but unfortunately that might just be the best way. I mean, get jeans hemmed, get shirts hemmed or taken in, etc. etc. Another option would be find a great seamstress and get clothes custom made (I'm not plus sized, though I'm short and about a US 10) from runway styles in a fabric of her choice. I've done this and gotten a dress, including materials for less than $100 which is a pretty good deal. Finally, I would suggest Old Navy since they go up to an 18 I think? maybe higher? Though I'm not sure what size your friend is, and all their pants come in three inseam lengths. of course, their tops don't come in petites but this would be an issue whether she was a size 2 or 20. This is an issue I constantly have.

Also, that McQueen dress isn't custom made in the traditional sense. It was on the runway, and since it was kaftan like to begin with I wonder if she just got a UK 14 or something? (equiv. to a US 16) Or else he made it for her in a larger size...

Meg, UK 14 is a US12 ish, a US16 would be a UK18ish - obviously depending on the garment and designer's sizing.

I know it's summer and all, but I really didn't think I'd see Beth in a kaftan. Doesn't seem like her style, but then if I had all these designers making me things I'd just take it and shut the hell up about my own tastes LOL I've loved the McQueen feather pattern ever since that spectacular dress a few seasons back...

yes thanks 3RingCircus, I always get them confused which is NO excuse since I live and shop in both countries! I just went into the plus section and they have the cutest swimsuits for those looking! I saw this and thought it was great! I'll have to see if they have it the regular line. But what i really like about it is that it offers support! I've not got a massive chest or anything, but I definately can't wear skimpy bikini's and I've worn just regular bikini top but it didn't make my chest look very good, I'd rather have support in there so I look better and feel like I can swim without falling out. So cute! They have some bikini's as well. Sorry the pic is so big!

Classic, when did Charming Shoppes take over LB? I only buy basics there now, the change of ownership is probably when they lost me too.

As for Beth Ditto, that looks like one of Mrs. Roper's caftans on Three's Company. But good for her for not being afraid of color, I guess.

Cait, I think CHRS took over LB around 2002 or so. My mind is a bit fuzzy about it.

Just noticed we have an article here on tFS about how Simon Doonan has noted the plus-sized gap and would like to do a line that fills it ... how right he is, and I hope he does ...

Doonan is certainly an interesting and creative guy. I think there would have to be culture change at Barneys for him to pull it off. Years ago, when the Pressmans were controlling it, the store had pretty much decided not to carry anything over a 12.

^ I know there are things over a 12 there, but there may not be many. Not sure if it would have to be with Barney's ... for that we need a copy of his contract ;)

It's good to see the conversation happening ... sooner & later, there are going to be some new solutions to this problem.

FYI from the shopping front

Stopped in Nordstrom's Encore in Fashion Valley (San Diego) on Friday and learned that they are temporarily not carrying Paige Premium Denim's plus line. The sales associate said there were "fit issues." Hopefully, they can work with Ms. Adams-Geller & Co. and get the items back in the stores. I can speak to the fit issues -- I had to size up to a 22 :angry:to get a pair that fit my thighs.

^ Well, it's definitely way harder to make things to fit (not to mention flatter) women with meat on their bones vs without ... hopefully they can work out the kinks ... :flower:

Jordin Sparks. Good stuff:

Jill Scott. I am not crazy about this look:

J. Hud. Good dress, she needed some Spanx or serious shapewear, with Terrence "Slickback" Howard. I don't like TH:

Queen Latifah. Dress is pretty, I think I've seen her in this before:

Tocci and the girls, about to bust out:

that is good
the fit is very off
I tried several sizes and even going up 2 sizes the fit was very odd
there is a reason you see so many people selling the plus sizes on ebay due to fit issues

^ Great looks on Jordin & Queen Latifah ... thanks for posting :flower:

I agree...but JHud and Jill are a hot mess
Also I find that I need to avoid shoes that cut me off at the ankle and most plus size women need to as well...it makes you look larger to me...keeping the foot open in the front helps elongate the leg and your frame. Jill seems to wear a lot of shoes with ankle straps....I don't think it is flattering to her...though she has nice legs and should show off one of her best assets.

Good point. Ms. Adams-Geller should be given limited credit for trying, but you have to have proper fit. I probably will be checking back w/Nordstrom later this summer to see if the jeans have returned. If they fit right, I can pay three figures.

^ If you are okay with paying a higher price for denim, then give Embodydenim.com.au a look over - they ship internationally and their quality is extremely high. They presently go from 8-26 in Australian sizes, which is 6-24US. There is stretch in the denim however this is for comfort, not really to accommodate someone between sizes. Check size charts and email them if you are uncertain.
