UK Vogue July 2014 : Christy Turlington by Patrick Demarchelier

Exactly. It's one thing not to care about it because then just say 'no comment', but to make such an archaic and stereotypical comment is just sad.

Maybe she's just not pretentious enough to give a phony type answer. She has the job of her dreams and loves men. Why must everyone be some feminist Lena Dunham type warrior? I prefer her answer to the "rage spiral" answer one Girls producer went on.

I'm actually not expecting all women to be card-bearing feminists, that wouldn't be fair. In Alt's specific case, I would've appreciated it more if she avoided a response altogether, than the comment she made. She must remember as EIC of France's, and one of the world's, top women's fashion magazine, there's a degree of tact that goes along with it. Her readership consist of both a feminist and non-feminist audience. To alienate one group and favour the other would be ridiculous and ill-advised.

Being pretentious is not mutually exclusive with having a foot in your mouth. No one asked her to go on the street holding a banner, but to give such an ignorant, sexist answer pretty much confirms why feminism is necessary in 2014.

A true feminist is a woman who speaks her mind.. Critics be damned.

^but she doesn´t consider herself a feminist so...

She's a post modern feminist. A woman who can stand on her own. Man don't stand behind some idea of brotherhood. It's every man for himself. Why can't it be every woman for herself? Her own ideas, her own beliefs, her own successes.

^But I get the feeling that you´re talking for yourself and your views on the subject, putting words in her mouth. On the other hand what she said can be construed as society´s definition of what a feminist is: a woman who looks butch and hates men.

I actually felt like defending her because people were making a really big deal about a throwaway comment she made. It seems pretty clear to me that she was trying to be lighthearted. No need for for other women to jump on her.
