US Vogue March 2006 : Natalie Portman by Craig McDean

i wanna see Naomi Campbell on cover of Vogue. just loved the haydey of the supermodels.
Its really getting a bit tired with Vogue doing the same stuff each year..most editorials looks the same too. which is why i keep juggling fashion magazines so i dont get bored. each one has its niche but vogue is still "Vogue", and unlss they downgrade significantly, i'll still pick up a copy.
how many of u read British Vogue? which one do u prefer (without being biased or patriotic)?

UK Vogue rocks US vogue. It's thicker (almost always), published on nicer paper (which, c'mon, counts for something!), uses a wider range of photographers and models, has better advertisements, better, meatier content and the covers are always great (and still models, sometimes!).

Thoroughfully agree (and I'm French :ninja:), through this month issue wasn't that great.

brief review of contents...full review w/ads coming:

daria in argentino by mario testino, styled by grace coddington
sasha, lily donaldson, snejana and caroline trentini by steven meisel, styled by tonne goodman
gemma by irving penn in a balenciaga tribute
liya by arthur elgort
marilyn manson and dita vontesse by steven klein
natalie portman by craig mcdean
carmen kass by steven klein

I posted Daria's editorial here.

Steven Meisel's colorful and whimsical editorial is very much reminiscent of Craig McDean's editorial "Paint the Town" in last year's March Vogue (with Sandra Bullock on the cover) which makes me question his originality, not to mention March's affinity for colorful editorials, but the models (Sasha Pivovara, Caroline Trentini, Lily Donaldson) shine beautifully throughout, playing and painting, intense yet purile.

Mario Testino's editorial of Daria is highly beautified and theatrical, flawlessly channeling Linda Evangelista and Ava Gardener, yet remaining without drama and unaffected. A beautiful, 22 page spread. One of my favorite Testino editorials, mainly due to the fact he scaled his flash use down.

eds to follow...

Not that I'm excited to see it but I heard there was a Badgley Mischka ad featuring the Olsen twins?

march vogue eds

"the leading lady" by mario testino, styled by grace coddington
daria in argentina channeling ava gardner and linda evangelista (it's the hair...it looks like it was cut short, but it's probably pinned)...this ed does remind me of linda's old ads for kenar, where she played an italian vamp...she wears chloe, chanel, donna karan, calvin klein, jpg, the usual suspects...

"stokes of genius" by steven meisel, styled by tonne goodman...gemma, lily donaldson, caroline trentini, sasha and snejana in an art studio paint themselves in a pop art extravaganza. if it wasn't for the fact that similar eds have appeared in the december and february issues, this one would be a standout. but instead, we get the same ed in a new location...and i'm tired of looking at gemma, lily d, and caroline trentini...

"the balenciaga mystique" by irving penn, styled by phyllis posnick...gemma in black and white in a balenciaga tribute...i wouldn't normally consider gemma a "balenciaga girl," but in these pics with hair pulled tightly back and makeup reminiscient of penn's late wife lisa, she looks stunning...she wears two of the standout pieces from the s/s collection:

00230m.jpg
00360m.jpg

and a long coat inspired by and ghesquiere's redo of a wedding gown from 1968.

"white heat" by arthur elgort, styled by grace coddington...liya in brazil, looking as gorgeous as ever...not generally a fan of elgort's work, but liya looks amazing, smiling, in top form. some standout shots are her in chloe and rochas...

00100m.jpg
00030m.jpg

"the waist land" by steven klein, styled by edward enniful...carmen at a 50s-esque diner in tucked in blouses and skirts...between this ed and her rock and roll ed from last month, carmen shows she's still got it.

more to come...

as a darialogist i say: i don't like the editorial.
the march issue of w editorial is much better, more classy and elegant. here daria is good as usual, despite the wig, but it's just the kind of over-fashion editorial i don't like. too lind-ish...

I'm not excited about this issue nor have I been excited about any of them for a while but I must get it because I always must have the months Vogue magazine-its just not as fun anymore.I always end up just loving the ads.....

I'm actually loving this issue - so far not bad. And I LOVE the Daria edit - just love it  However, I am really disappointed that there is no Natalie Portman edit - usually US Vogue goes nuts on the celeb edits - but this time only 2 pictures?? That really sucks.

Totally agree! US vogue doesnt even have a "catwalk report" issue in its march and sept issues:( . but having said that i definately pick up March and sept issues of US Vogue coz they are much more value for money (very heavy for the same price:P )

hey is gemma in this because she isn't mentioned in earl grey's review for this ed....

no, you're right...no gemma...it's sasha, snejana, caroline trentini and lily donaldson...

march vogue eds continued

"vogue index" what women across america plan to buy for spring

"unshaven, not stirred" by david bailey...interview with new james bond daniel craig

"power players" four trailblazing women who are changing global health and beauty: Scientist Elizabeth Halloran fights the bird flu, surgeon Haideh Hirmand redefines plastic surgery, environmentalist Laurie David's (wife of Larry) campaign against global warming, retired model Dawn Russell's alternative treatment for melanoma

"the bride wore purple" by steven klein, styled by phyllis posnick...hamish bowles covers the nuptials of marilyn manson and dita von teese, first in their civil ceremony in l.a., then the main event in ireland... pics will be posted in a bit...

"the butterfly effect" by craig mcdean...esther seldon profiles natalie portman...i think she got shafted here...it's a very short profile...hopefully her piece in april's vanity fair will be bigger...

"scaling new heights" profile of shoe designer pierre hardy, who designs for himself, plus balenciaga and hermes...

verdict: when i heard some of the eds, i was greatly anticipating this issue, but then i got it. imo, it falls flats...the daria ed is nice, but i prefered gemma's balenciaga tribute and carmen's ed...the other pieces weren't nearly as interesting, and the ads were the only thing i was truly interested in. if you're a fan of gemma, daria, or liya, this is a must buy, but otherwise, it's a bore. 2 out of 5 stars.

marilyn manson/dita von teese pics from vogue...(from nachtkabarett.com)
her violet dress is vivienne westwood, the black suit is dior, the plaid suit is moschino...
