Vanity Fair November 2009 : Penélope Cruz by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott

I can't complain about the colours and I like the undone dress, and it's refreshing to see some cover emphasis on someone's behind, rather than breasts always getting the glory.

Although I'm wondering if the set-up is little reminiscent of Gisele's recent cover - they're both clothes-falling-off backless glamour shots. Of course, they're not the exact same pose or colour scheme, but considering the complaint of poor sales about that Gisele issue, I wonder why they'd go for anything which looked even the slightest bit similar to that one. Knowing how many different ways they could have Posed penelope, they've selected this for the cover...

i think she gets lost in the huge deep red.
she's gorgeous, tho.
thanx!!

[btw... excuse my ignorance, but why mags in such big advance?? we're not even in october yet!!]

I really enjoyed reading the article on Penélope by Ingrid Sischy. I Love her writing & I'm happy to see her back. This seems like a really good issue content wise. Last month's wasn't so great IMO. I look forward to getting it.

I love Penelope and I echo MMA's statements about being glad that Ingrid is back for VF but I can't help but wonder if these pictures were outtakes from the Mango campaign...

And I say that in all seriousness. These really seem like they might have been shot that very same day.

I like it...VF covers have sucked lately and this sin't too bad.

the women that still alive!

I was worried they stopped using living people on the cover, too.
I'm not sold on the cover, but the third picture reminds me of a 70s
Scavullo portrait.

Thats it!! They should just change their title to Murdoch Monthly at this point.

 I don't understand why everyone hates the cover so much.
Personally I love it. It's clearly a nod to Old Hollywood - with all the red, the styling and the 'va-va-voom' header.
I've seen ALOT worse covers than this!

Got my subscription issue today - the UK edition is 186 pgs. There's a strange greasy stain on the front of my copy, on Penelope's bottom, which makes it look like she's sat down on something. I can't say I love the cover, but I do like it.

I wish they'd shown a few more of the celebrity illustrations in the article covering the magazine's own Proust Questionnaire, and the feature on Norman Rockwell was great, showing the photographic studies that underpinned the actual paintings.

As for the piece about Dominck Dunne, part of me asks, why can't they run something about him every month for a while, because he certainly had a more interesting life than some people who've gotten the lion's share of VF's recent coverage.

Classic Cruz. Sexy, Beautiful, Mysterious and utterly feminine.

Thanks Mirik
