I think Jacobs would be fantastic for Dior and a good move for his career but I will miss him in vuitton if the rumors are true

Jacobs doing couture can't be any worse than whoever did Dior's most recent collection.

Really? But I thought Bernard Arnault was thrilled at the progress Phoebe was making at Celine. I'll only believe this when a confirmation is made.

New Names in the Dior Hat
By BY CATHY HORYN

I am not at all surprised LVMH executives are talking to Marc Jacobs about moving from Louis Vuitton to Dior, as Women’s Wear Daily reported today. Not to disparage Mr. Jacobs’s talents, but where else can they look? With few exceptions, the strategy of Bernard Arnault, the chairman of LVMH, has been to load up his brands with big, bankable stars, and there are not many of them available. Shortly after John Galliano was dismissed from Dior, editors put together an imaginary list of candidates: Alber Elbaz of Lanvin, Tom Ford, Nicolas Ghesquiere of Balenciaga, among others. Yet for obvious reasons these individuals might be happy where they are, as would Sarah Burton, the creative director of Alexander McQueen, whose name surfaced soon after the royal wedding in April. According to WWD, she rebuffed overtures from LVMH.

As a proven talent, Mr. Jacobs could certainly do marvelous things at Dior, but I can’t imagine that Yves Carcelle, the president of Louis Vuitton, would be happy about such a move. I also wonder why LVMH doesn’t build for the future by considering talented designers not necessarily in the Dior gossip pipeline.

Here, then, are three suggestions for LVMH:

Raf Simons: He quickly became a star at Jil Sander, despite having little experience in women’s fashion. He helped juice up the market with color. And he knows how to build a design team — no small thing today.

Sébastien Peigné: You’ve probably never heard of him, but he’s the women’s designer at Mugler. He spent about eight years in the Balenciaga studio. He seems disciplined and he knows what’s young and modern.

Christopher Kane: Let’s face it, Mr. Kane needs a bigger stage for his imaginative fashion. Just about everyone in the business is curious to see what he does each season. And working with Donatella Versace has enlarged his understanding of big brands.

I guess they're considering Marc Jacobs cause he's still got the reputation of being all youthful and fresh to live on for a while, god knows in reality, he never created and he stopped stealing interesting ideas and recreating quality vintage finds many seasons ago. Why not having the guts of bringing a new name like in the old days? is there really a shortage of talent? has no one graduated from Antwerp or London or Bunka in the last 20 years? is it really that hard to trust someone with skills but unknown enough to be hard to define?.. they're not doing any favors to the industry by rotating the same 5 characters all the time, there is a thirst for something new, do they really think of all people, Marc Jacobs will be able to provide that?.. I hate sounding like Nicola but this extreme preference on the known versus the unknown is so typical of old businessmen, please retire! :innocent:

^ the wwd says she'd stay at celine AND also do vuitton

i think that is unlikely...
philo has always maintained that she wanted to spend time with her husband and family, and managing vuitton would require alot of travel...
also she only took the celine job if she could stay in london to work, and i doubt they will let her do that while running vuitton...
it's a huge business compared to celine...

honestly, i don't know why they would even want her to leave celine...
she's just started to gain momentum, why stop it now?
at least marc has been at vuitton for 10 years, maybe he sees this as a new challenge...

The very idea of having Marc Jacobs at Dior is absoutely appaling. But I suppose that if he does get chosen for the job, it has something to do with his length of time working for an LVMH brand.
And regarding the comment about Jacobs doing couture, yes I shudder at the thought too. But just take a look at what haute couture has been reduced to these days: you've got someone like Courtney Love wearing couture on a red carpet.

well courtney love (these days) is wearing couture cause tisci is a great fan of hers. that doesn't take anything from the beauty of the clothes that he's producing. While I have some doubts on what marc would do...

Philo for Vuitton sounds very intriguing, I'm very curious to see the outcome of that if it happens.

Maybe for the designs, but he doesn't seem to have the PR or people skills to handle something so important and high profile...

Alaia doesn't have the PR/people skills, or does he choose not to have it? Seems more like the latter to me.

I like Marc at Dior, and Phoebe at LV, let's see what they bring to us, I don't think it will be terrific.

so if he DOES take up the seat at dior, would he go back and forth between NY and France to juggle his MJ & MBMJ brand and dior??

I don't want Pheobe at LV. She's perfect at Celine.

Marc at Dior is a head scratcher. I just can't imagine him doing couture. He could surprise us though.

hmm.. i'm not sure. i like marc jacobs' own line most seasons, but for him to do dior... don't think he's quite adventurous/daring enough to handle the image which galliano created for them.

I really hope this is just a false rumour. Marc Jacobs at Dior doesn't sound appealing to me at all.

marc actually does that now with vuitton and his labels...
he has an apartment in paris...
