Who Will Succeed John Galliano At Dior? #2 *Update Raf Simons Offically Hired*

Givenchy will always have a special place in my heart because of Hubert and Audrey, but despite being a Givenchy-phile, so what if the house falters after Tisci leaves, Dundas over at Pucci is primed to step into that spotlight. Also, Givenchy kinda has the wind at its back on this front considering that the last three lead designers names were Tisci, McQueen and Galliano and Macdonald was no slouch either.

ETA:
Correction: Macdonald's tenure came between Tisci's and McQueen's.

I would definitely rather see Haider at Dior and have Tisci stick at Givenchy, though perhaps Dior could use a designer with a little less "name"? I'd love to see someone with a solid, viable track record but a really low profile take the lead, a la Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen. But I suppose that's just too risky for an empire as large as Dior.

Also, from Huffington Post [and rather sad ]

Azzedine Alaïa -- a man who's been in the designing game since the 1980s and dressed everyone from Cher Horowitz ("Clueless," people) to First Lady Michelle Obama -- talked to Women's Wear Daily about the pressures associated with the industry.
Of the many yearly deadlines for new collections, Alaïa told the fashion newspaper, "It's inhumane." Naturally, the conversation turned to John Galliano. Alaïa remarked, "It's sad. He's a friend. It's too much: too many collections; too much pressure." He wouldn't speculate about who might take the helm at Dior, lamenting, "There are some people who are irreplaceable."

Lacroix ! Sweetie, darling!

He would do DIOR proud!
Drop-dead couture, a master of color and blazing embellishment!
Is he not a viable contender?

^ Aesthetically yes. But his sales history is terrible and he's too old.

I think Olivier Theyskens! He's got the vision and talent. I hated Tisci's last collection.

^ Lol thats now what I meant. I meant that they're probably looking for someone who can design long term. Lacroix isn't exactly young, vibrant and healthy.

Just had a great interview with Kate & Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte. They gave me a great bit of news. But my lips are sealed until next week!

I seriously can't read tweets like this anymore without thinking it might have to do with Dior

Naive as I am, I would hope creativity and productivity would be the important criteria when hiring a designer. Naturally, it should be someone youngish whose vision either is similar to that of Dior or who does not already have a strong association with another major brand.

But vibrant and healthy....it sounds superficial and irrelevant. Unless you mean healthy as in "not near breakdown".

Look, the day people like McQueen and Galliano are overlooked because they're not healthy, positive and vibrant enough is the day to throw in the towel. I know you haven't really said so, and probably you don't mean it, but the answer to this crisis in fashion is not to replace creative, sensitive people by glib, healthy robots.

^ Oh it hardly needs to be said that the first criterion for a successor should be creativity and a good sense of a forward movement (especially at a house like Dior). For sure. It's just that LVMH obviously isn't going to settle for just that. They're probably looking for some super-charismatic character who will not only be as big of a personality as Galliano was, but also someone who's gonna be able to handle new fame, new pressures and new technology. And quite honestly I don't think Lacroix fits the bill. The guy just went bankrupt, do you really think he wants Pinault breathing down his neck for good sales? And he's obviously not as technologically capable as a younger designer. So I think it's only natural that they'd go for someone "young" and "vibrant".

But THIS I agree with!

^ Honestly, I think the opposite; I think they'll choose someone low-key, someone who the press and public cant imagine abusing people in bars.

Put under enough pressure, almost anyone can have a break down. And those who will never have a break down, you probably don't want to be around. Because they are mostly sociopaths - people without empathy.

But yes, the ideal candidate would be more low key - a quietly charismatic contrast to Galliano. Who at the same time is not too boring to pull off a really good couture show.

Just a thought.. If Riccardo really moved to Dior and left Givenchy... then they would go back to the runway shows for couture, perhaps?

I probably didn't understand you right but....are you saying Givenchy could do couture again when RT is not there? What about Dior couture?

If Dior does not do couture that would be a loss. And probably the end of Paris Couture week?

^ i think he just meant that since riccardo decided to move back the couture presentations in the atelier and stop doing runway shows for hc, if he moves to dior then givenchy might start doing them again. i think.

^Yes, that was what I meant, mistress_f :flower: I'd love to see an actual couture show again, given Givenchy would have a new designer.

Still, what about the Dior couture show in the event RT would be the new Dior chief designer?
