all designers who are above mid level Department store price range, are to some extent "status-Labels" how else does one explain the prices?

Look around and revise that statement...

What I'm saying is, your referring to all high-end labels as 'status' labels was a blanket statement that applied to Dior and many other labels, but not all

..but yes, Dior has the name with an enormous status, so that they could (can/do) churn out whatever crap they please at almost no cost--and people would (will/do) buy it.

Not a fan--especially the logo stuff. Like people have previously mentioned--anyone can conjure up something outlandish and call it art, and because of his name it's a masterpiece, but in reality--no one can really wear that shish. He does purposely go for a touch of tacky--and that's cool, but I just think it's time for a new direction, the tacky-cool look is kinda old now.

^ Thank you! You don't know what to expect from Dior in detail but you know what to expect in general and GOODNESS that has become boring...

Yes anyone can, but Galliano doesnt just CALL it art... it is art. He does not make haute couture so that people can wear it.

And also... about the being wearable thing. I believe we had a discussion about it being wearable earlier... go to a boutique.. you wont find most of what you saw on the runway. And if you dont like the logo things, dont buy em'. They are there to keep the store open..

I don't really like Dior in general, but I have a crush on the New Look. All those lovely cinched waists. Le sigh.

I love Galliano and his brilliant creativity!! but Dior can occasionally border the line between trashy and creative...and fall on the trashy side.

...How can Galliano spawn such extreme feelings in both directions? I guess he's doing something right...

Galliano's ego is what started Dior's popularity and it will soooooo end it.

Wrong. I think most of it has to do with the fact that LVMH has invested immensely in the PR and brand building of Dior... so even if Galliano wouldn't have been creative director of the house, it would have still been an influenial global player... though different in it's spirit.

I've read all the messages written so far...it's confusing.
I think you can hardly say that Galliano isn't a talented fashion designer...what I really wonder is whether his immagination and technical approach is really consistent with Dior's esthetic. I mean, Galliano can fully display his talent when it comes to fluid, almost liquid designs and his efforts are often directed at lightness effects: I couldn't think about anything farther from Monsieur Christian's stiff, imposing, constructed outfits...The point is that Galliano was chosen by LVMH not because his style proved to be particularly consistent with Dior's identity and heritage (I think you could rather say that about Ferre', even if he had a less flamboyant immagination than Galliano) but only because he was fashionable at the time, like most Saint Martins' graduates (only time showed how inadequate they could sometimes be: think of Mc Donald), and an excellent showman, which can also turn out to be beneficial to businness (:yuk: ).

I'm still sticking with a simpler opinion as to why Dior has exploded. Paris Hilton. When I say this I am not saying that it is a good thing. In fact it's quite unfortunate. You can disagree but I noticed an EXPLOSION of interest in DIOR (not to mention an explosion of counterfit Diors being produced) after the Simple Life and I cannot exactly pinpoint why. I so wish this wasnt the case but it's really how I feel. As soon as the younger generations grab hold of something they like, it explodes into this everlasting trend (as much as we'd like it to die - think Juicy Couture - ickk!). Dior has been popular (revolutionary popular!) amongst the fashion insiders forever! That's undoubted so it's not to imply that Dior simply fell on the map after the simple life but after this certain demographic takes interest in a brand (a company's dream come true) it explodes in ways no other demographic can make possible. I mean, have you all seen Galliano's website? His little stories and skits and etc, it screams pop culture. The "Galliano Girl" brings up different celebrities such as Gwen Stefani at every chance. It's just amazing the transition. And yes, I do blame Paris Hilton and the Simple Life phenom. I don't want to be misunderstood here, I'm trying to be as clear on my opinion as possible...

About Paris Hilton being responsible for Dior's explosion, when Dior "Exploded" (I dont know about this by the way...Im just wondering) It would have been around 2000 right? A few years after John started working there...well Paris wasnt famous then was she? I just think shes someone whos recently had Dior (And I havent seen her with Dior that much...just a few bags)....no? :ermm:

The thing is, the way I see it (though I could definately be wrong), the Dior explosion came WAY after 2000...
