^^^i like that painting...
thanks---
yes, i guess all department stores worldwide are somewhat similar...
though we don't have the big food halls in the basements here in the US...
*they put cooking stuff and kitchen stuff in the basements usually...
runner---if you knew someone who was visiting tokyo this fall, what are the top three department stores you would say they should visit?

...
*i am rather surprised to hear that barney's does not carry YY in tokyo...
they used to have such a good partnership...
that's just ridiculous!...barneys is just not what it used to be...
very disappointing...

I think, if any department store in japan was able to fascinate you, that would be because of its hugeness or customer servise or those food halls in the basements. and maybe basically you are not very interested in any uptown thing. so the one you should visit is seibu ikebukuro. there is also tobu ikebukuro on the other side of the station. tobu is vast on the same scale, but doesn't have YY femme in it. so I'd say seibu ikebukuro where you'd see something slightly more real as opposed to unreal or too systematic as well as YY femme, homme, Y's, and limi.
any basement food sections at any department store must be fun (though to see and know all of them all over tokyo must take at least three years). but I guess you could find a bit more fun in the basements at seibu ikebukuro. I mean the people visiting there, who could be a bit more powerful, less touristic, trendy.
the other two would be isetan shinjuku and mitsukoshi hihonbashi.
about isetan, it would be good for your knowledge and your experience to associate with each other.
mitsukoshi is the king of the kings. the most famous (or sort of established) department stores over here have their roots as a kimono dealer. mitsukoshi ( it has to be the one in nihonbashi, the main branch) represents the general, historical, traditional, etc, that is, what the japanese department stores essentially are.
barneys japan was what isetan started together with barneys new york.
several years ago barneys japan was sold and is no more isetan's.
but, since YY is currently being expanding, maybe it is going to be available at barneys japan again.
btw, muji was originally a seibu-related project. that might have had something to do with the involvement of YY inc in the muji clothing dept.
