Yohji Yamamoto

this is the light crepe-y wool YY cape i got that has an attached scarf with pointed collar...
and this is the kind of blue i mean...
i like the colours and fabrics together (though the styles don't match)
i feel that the deepness of the black brings out the brightness of the blue...
they enhance one another...
imho...

as for "love story", thought it is trying to make us giggle
in sort of similar manner to this duo (denki groove) does.
so maybe YY is still alright.

(apart from the fact english in #387 seems a bit more funny than usual)
of course mischief of love story is not as obvious as that of j-pop.
YY did it sort of more secretly, therefore the way love story is done is almost dangerous, since it can easily look serious.
anyway I believe YY made it reversible here, so that the market could take it both ways. or we could take it as another double meaning from YY. ( also, if we are allowed to speak japanese, it's share/洒落 as an expression and kyakurai/却来 as a concept. something very traditional )

i found this on facebook...
"Kyakurai" 却来 which translates "to return to the original place after reaching a certain stage." It is one of the famous steps that the Noh dancing master, Zeami, incorporated in his teaching that eventually brought sarugaku to the higer level of Noh. It teaches us the importance of returning to the basics one more time after reaching a certain level.

OK-
i will accept this interpretation and maybe i am not so annoyed now...
...
thank you runner...
it's a pretty picture for a fragrance ad, anyway...
and there is still a moodiness there...

my first reaction to your comparison with those j-pop pics was just as you say...
those images are quite stylized and it is obvious that there is some humour behind them...
but not so much with the YY fragrance ad...

when you say "share/洒落"- do you mean it is a pun or a joke?
i guess this is what you are saying...

so- ok, in that sense, i will accept your viewpoint...
though, it is definitely borderline...
imho...

...

yes kyakurai is basically something like that above. and used in a certain context in a broader sense, kyakurai is to transgress. only if one is on the home stretch with one's career, one is encouraged to do what one forbade, avoided, resisted, etc. trying to remain what one has been is, in a way, confinement.
zeami would like it to be zigzagging between one and the other, over here and over there, what one does and what one usually doesn't.

yes share/洒落 can mean those, a pun, a joke. but it has a bit more complicated meaning or even is a word with double meaning. it's jest, humour and also tastefulness, smartness, etc. so share could be sort of refined play.

i LOVE polka dots...
i don't have enough polka dots in my life...
^_^

i almost got a regulation by YY shirt in chiffon polka dots last fall, but in the end i returned it because the polka dots did not match at the seam in the back of the shirt and that just bothered me...
:ninja:...

the white one is cute, imo...
the longer one seams almost unnecessarily complicated though...
the extra 'stuff' does not seem to enhance the design or coolness enough to make it worthwhile...

the use of different sized polka dots already adds interest enough for me...
this also mitigates the issue of random alignment of dots...
the tiny collar on the white shirt is cute...

thanks runner...!

Music composed by our beloved Ryuichi Sakamoto for our beloved Yohji for F/W 95/96. I'd always subconsciously associated these two in my mind, they share a similar austere poetry and lyrical romanticism. Probably old news for you all, but first time I hear of this, so happy.

What art, what beauty.
(Keep listening because it suddenly develops so gorgeously after 5'30'')

yes- it's lovely...

i did a little diggin recently after you guys brought him up in the tokyo shopping thread and found that he had made a movie with david bowie in the 80's, so i watched that...

then i realized that he is also featured in madonna's Rain video.....
i knew he looked familiar when i first saw that video, but it took until now for me to put the pieces together...

i wasn't familiar with him, and yet i was, without realizing it was him...

anyway- sadly, i recently saw in the news that sakamotosan is going to stop touring in order to be treated for some cancer he has now...
though he will continue working and writing i guess...
hope he will make a full and speedy recovery...

also I guess you had seen him in this from 1985:

F/W 2014 already in stores
of it, fun stuff

The stripey top is cute.
OMG--gotta brush up on my fieldwork...haven't heard that for 20 years....

Well, I'm finding out that Yohji sometimes plays guitar at Sakamoto's performances. The man is full of surprises. Yes let's really hope Sakamoto-san makes a full and speedy recovery indeed!!

You know Sakamoto also had a kind of important acting role in "The Last Emperor", for which won an Oscar for the original soundtrack. He's written the music for tons of big-budget films, mostly for Bertolucci but also for others.

err...
i had never seen or heard of that song!

i guess it wasn't so radio friendly so MTV never played it here...
OT-*europa by thomas dolby is one of my fave songs of all time..."we'll be the pirate twins again..."
:argg:...:innocent:...^_^...

thanks for posting that runner!
what a handsome and talented man!

i agree that the new YY stuff is fun...
the stripey top is definitely an attractive piece...
but i also really like the men's pants and the frankenstein illustration...
all the illustrations are great, imho...
and i like the contrasting panels of fabric on the shirts...
good stuff...
